First look: Apple's fastest Power Mac yet is a barnburner

COMPUTERWORLD's Ken Mingis reports:

"Lured by the siren song of speed, I wandered into a local Apple Store late last week, my interest piqued by the new dual 2.7-GHz Power Mac G5s that Apple Computer Inc. announced last Wednesday (see story). Actually, wandered isn't the right word, as I made a beeline for the store after work with the goal of bringing home one of those new dual 2.7s......

"In a word: Awesome."

iPod's halo

The Washington Times' Chris Baker says:

"Erin Farker flipped on her personal computer one day last year and got nothing. No power. No error screen. Nothing.

"The McLean resident wasn't too upset, though, figuring this was a golden opportunity to replace her 10-year-old clunker with something cooler from Apple Computer Inc.

"Miss Farker had started thinking about buying an Apple a few months earlier, after she got one of the company's IPod digital music players.

"Her graphic artist boyfriend, a longtime Apple enthusiast who works part time at the company's Tysons Corner Center store, helped her choose an IBook laptop with a 12-inch screen. Apple sells the IBook for between $1,000 and $1,500.

"'I love it,' Miss Farker said. Its best feature is that it is more compatible with her beloved IPod...."

Can Apple Stay on Top?

LAPTOP Magazine's Joel Johnson says:

"Is something rotten in Cupertino? Apple has always been a company of contrasts, both the struggling underdog and the corporate giant unafraid to stomp on the little guy or co-opt his great ideas. Apple is on the verge of a company-wide transformation from a computer vendor to a consumer electronics company, led by the market-crushing success of the iPod. In the process, will Apple lose those values that made so many people love their Macintoshes in the first place? Did they ever really have those values at all?

"Which Apple will win out in the end? The Good Apple, the one that takes chances and tries to make using technology a pleasure? Or The Bad Apple, that smacks down dissent and ignores constructive criticism. I've got a suspicion it'll probably be a little of both, and that's too bad."

Mac Night Owl: The Tiger Report: Are System Requirements Too Stiff?

A few days before Tiger was released, I got a call from a local physician asking if his early generation iMac could run 10.4. "Does it have built-in FireWire," I asked, and he had to check. "No," he said sadly, understanding the implications, that it was time to retire that faithful computer.

Linux to Apple's rescue?

p2pnet.net News says:

"Online seller Tiger Direct is after Apple for, it says, infringing its trademark with Mac OS X 10.4 'Tiger'.

"But Red Hat founder Bob Young, who recently bought Canada’s Hamilton Tiger-Cats football team, says the lawsuit is "a load of codswallop" and has offered to license historical use of the word "tiger" to Apple for free......"

Mac OS X 10.4: Restoring applications from a Mac OS X 10.2 Software Restore disc

A new Apple Knowledge Base Article says:

"If you installed Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger on your computer, Software Restore will not restore applications such as iMovie, iPhoto, or Classic Support from a Mac OS X 10.2 Restore disc. This document applies to Mac OS X 10.4 or later and Restore discs for Mac OS X versions 10.2 through 10.2.7 (the Restore disc that may have come with your computer).

"Instead, Software Restore prompts you to insert the Restore disc, even though that's what is already in there. So how can you reinstall the software? Here are a couple ways."

eWeek: AOL Builds Browser Into AIM

"America Online Inc. is bundling its own Web browser into the newest versions of AOL Instant Messenger in an effort that is likely to expose a wider swath of users to the browsing features it has built atop Internet Explorer.

The recently renamed AOL Explorer browser is included as part of an upgrade to AIM 5.9, which AOL released in beta on Tuesday. AOL also plans to include the browser in its next-generation AIM client, code-named Triton, which went into beta testing last week, a company spokesperson confirmed."

eWeek: Microsoft Relaxes Open Stance

"Microsoft Corp. is softening its attitude toward the open-source community, calling for a sit-down to discuss how it can better work with the open-source world.

At a recent conference in Cambridge, Md., sponsored by the Association for Competitive Technology, Brad Smith, Microsoft's general counsel, called for cooperation among Microsoft, its competitors and the open-source community.

"I think that in the world of software development today, there is a broad panoply of software development models," Smith said. "I think we're going to have to figure out how to build some bridges between the various parts of our industry.""
