10 Days With The Netscape Navigator 9.0 Web Browser
From Elaine;
Hi,
As a Netscape user since 4.2, I was delighted by your review, especially after reading other reviews that were less favorable. I grudgingly moved Firefox to my secondary browser in favor of Safari but miss some of the features in Firefox. SeaMonkey remains disappointing though I still use Thunderbird which I _much_ prefer over Apple's Mail.app.
Best regards,
Elaine
Hi Elaine;
Glad you liked the review.
I continue to be mystified by the hostility and disdain that are being directed toward this browser release in some quarters. I've been using it now for more than two weeks as my main workhorse browser on two computers (first the RC1 build and since Monday the final 9.0 release, and it's been solid, fast, unbuggy and a pleasure to use with a very attractive user interface. I always liked Netscape, and started using it at Version 2. I can say without hesitation that Navigator 9.0 is the best Netscape, and one of the best (I'm also quite smitten with Opera 9.50) browsers I've ever used, period.
Safari has never really clicked with me, nor for that matter Firefox, and while I've found Seamonkey to be very dependable, I like Navigator 9 better.
On the email front, I still greatly prefer Eudora to either Mail or T-Bird.

Apple's Expanded List Of New Leopard Features
From Bruce Williamson
Hi Charles,
I just finished reading through this list of all the new features in Leopard, and found it quite eye-opening and encouraging. I think Apple has another potential grand slam home run on their hands, but we'll have to see how stable the initial release actually is. I'm currently using an iBook G4 and plan to upgrade sometime in the next six months to a newer laptop. Just being able to install Leopard/Time Machine on my iBook now to aid that upgrade & migration process later on is going to be worth the whole $129 to me.

Cheers,

Hi Bruce;
Yes indeed; and impressive array of new features, enhancements, and tweaks. I'm looking forward to trying Leopard out, and hoping that it will run decently on my 1.33 GHz PowerBook.
I also think Leopard is going to be a big hit.

Britannica CD Classic Mac OS support
From Stephen
Charles,
I read your very through, well-written review of the Britannica CD. My old version of the EB (1 CD, 1997) no longer works when I upgraded my minitower G3 (single platform, NOT dual with "Classic" and OSX) from Apple's OS 8.6 to OS 9.2.2 . Will the Britannica 2002 Standard edition run on my 9.2.2?
Stephen
Hi Stephen;
Unfortunately, I no longer have a copy of Britannica 2002 to try, but the Britannica 2002 Expanded Edition DVD System Requirements were:
Mac OS 8.6, 9.x, X or higher
iMac or G3 266 MHz or faster processor
128 MB physical RAM
140 MB free hard-disk space
DVD-ROM drive
800x600 resolution, thousands of colors, millions of colors for Mac OS X users
I'm presuming that means the 2002 Expanded Edition should work under OS 9.2.2 .if you can find a copy.
However, note well that for some peculiar reason, the Britannica 2002 DVD Edition does not support 0S X, while there was a Britannica 2002 Standard Edition on CD-ROM that does support OS X, but not the Classic Mac OS.
Britannica 2002 Standard Edition System requirements:
Mac OS X
iMac or G3 266 MHz or faster processor
128 MB physical RAM, no virtual memory 120 MB free hard-disk space
CD-ROM drive
800x600 resolution, millions of colors
Hope this helps,
Charles
SimpleTech SimpleDrive Issue
From URKO
Hi.
I installed a SimpleTech SimpleDrive for my Mac but found that when I tried to back up my iMovie files problems occurred. Whenever I try to play or edit an iMovie file it will only play a stilted second or two and then crash. if I try to import new video into a new iMovie file on the SimpleDrive, it will also import a second or two and then crash. Any idea why this may be happening? Is it only the SimpleDrive Deluxe with the FireWire port that can back up video? Any information you can give me would be appreciated.
URKO
Hi URKO;
I can't say for sure what's happening, but I infer that the troubles manifest when you try to play movies that are stored on the SimpleDrive via the USB 2.0 connection rather than bringing the movie file back to your hard drive first.
I'm *guessing* that the USB interface is not fast enough to keep up with the data streaming demand of the iLife software. While USB 2.0 is theoretically able to support faster data throughput than FireWire 400, in the real world FW 400 has proved substantially faster in benchmark tests.
One reason why I'm a much bigger fan of FireWire than USB 2.0, and I suspect, although I can't affirm from hard knowledge, that you would not be experiencing this issue with a FireWire interface.
The SimpleDrive I have has been entirely trouble free, but I only use it for data backups and transfers, and I've never tried to access files on it with an application running from my hard drive.
I hope this will be a little bit helpful.
Charles
