Big Al Processor Upgrade Caveat?

Big Al Processor Upgrade?
Hi Charles,
I write to alert you to potential complications with the Daystar G4 1.92GHz CPU Upgrade for the PowerBook G4. See:
http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/G4CARDS/daystar_1.92GHz_PB_G4.html
These may be only a two time occurrence, but knowing your past opinions about chance-taking, this may cool you off a bit about upgrading your big AL.
I have only one experience with upgrading a G4. It did not go well.
Sincerely,
Joseph
Hi Joseph;
Thanks for the heads-up.
I saw the review, and linked to it in Monday's Moore's Tech Web Reader.
I will be interested to hear what Daystar's Gary Dailey has to say about this reported issue, and I trust that if there is a problem that wasn't ideosyncratic to that particular PowerBook, they will be working on getting it corrected.
In the meantime, as you suggest, a cautious approach is in order for the risk-averse like myself. The BigAl is working great!

OS 10.4 Replacement for QUIKDEX
Dear Charlie,
I wrote you back in December 2004 (I believe it was), asking about a OS 10 equivalent for the venerable QUIKDEX Desk Accessory by Cassidy/Greene that I began using in 1987. And continued through OS 9.2 and until changing to 10.3.
You kindly gave me 2 or 3 possibilites which I checked out; however none of them had the features of QUIKDEX:
- individual small Rolodex-size window; resizeable
- Free form - no blanks to fill in; just enter your info/data
- unlimited string search; simply type one or more letters into SEARCH window, hit TAB through windows until find what you want.
- able to print any card
- does not require any format or style
- great place to quickly dump any text copied from anywhere into a new card, save, and then come back later.
Now with 10.4.5 and Widgets, do you know of anything that is close to functioning like the old reliable QUIKDEX?
With many thanks...and appreciation for the tremendous service and assistance you provide for all the world of Mac users, from your corner of Canada!

Hi Jack;
I probably mentioned DEVONThink is my previous reply. It's what I use for quick text dumping and as a general research database. The search engine is excellent, although perhaps not quite as convenient as the QUIKDEX one you're used to.
I don't have exhaustive knowledge of what's available, but there are some Widget-based note applications available. In fact, DEVONThink Pro now incorporates Dashboard widgets for quick access to some functions.
One that might be of interest is eNotes 1.2, which the developer's blurb describes thus:
Use the eNotes to maintain all your ideas, data, recipes and notes up-to-date. Save every interesting idea or text easily from any application, any time, perfectly organised and keeping your Desktop clear.
And if you have an iPod, take all this information, tasks, calendar and to-dos with you.
Create as many notes as you need directly from your favourite application. Use all the categories you want, assign priorities, include graphs, add due dates for your tasks and decide when do you want to be alerted of the deadline of an event...

Seasons
From Kevin Shaffer
Hi there!
Thought I'd drop a line; waiting for the snow to subside... have some things to do tomorrow and will probably go by a few stores enroute to get a few items I need to (getting to the point of canned beans and instant coffee without flavored creamer or water to make it out of) and hopefully the warming trend won't mean an avalanche before I can make the trip.
Can't want winter to end really soon because that just forces summer to arrive soon, too; and then hastens the next autumn. But if time could stand still, it'd have to be at a time either before or after bugs. And tourists. (Sometimes winter can be good. Don't rush me, I'm thinking... what winter can be good for...!) I guess it is good for snow & avalanches.
Well, I don't really have alot to say; so I'm sending this.
Take care! - Kevin
Hi Kevin;
We still have some patches of snow here, but there wasn't much all winter (only had to shovel the driveway three times), and the lake is about half-open already ( the usual date for the ice to go out is around the fourth week of April, so it's way early).
I agree with you about the seasons. In some respects, winter is great, and my favorite time of year would definitely be before or after the bugs. What passes for spring here in Nova Scotia sucks big time lots of dreary overcast, bitter easterly winds off the icy Atlantic, mud, blackflies followed by mosquitos. However the post-bug mid to late summer through the end of hard-freeze winter can be pleasant throughout, especially since we don't have avalanches here.
