PowerBook G3 and WiFi

From Patrick Crowe

I have an older black PowerBook G3, with 2 USB ports.(The model before Pismo) I am wondering if this model has a slot for an Airport card, similar to what the Pismo has. If not, then I would need some type of card to fit in one of the card slots on the side. Do you you know of any cards that would fit and would provide for a wireless connection through an airport network.

thanks

P Crowe

Hi Patrick;

The model PowerBook you have is commonly referred to as a "Lombard", which is more convenient than the official moniker "PowerBook G3 Series Bronze". It does not support an internal AirPort card, but can conncet to WiFi using a PC CardBus adapter.

Wegener Media currently has some NetGear Airport Super G speed PCMCIA cards for $49.99 that support the Lombard, although please note that this card requires OS X - it isn't OS 9 compatible.

More info here:

Wegeners also have a Buffalo G54 802.11g card for $39.99 that supports th Lombard (OS X required also).

You can check it out at:

I don't know of any wireless card solution for the Lombard that supports OS 9.

Problem switching from aMSN to Firefox

From Dolna

Good morning Charles,

I have 4 applications open: aMSN, Firefox, Thunderbird and Preview.

While in aMSN I can switch to Preview or Thunderbird but not to Firefox.

When I click the Firefox icon in my dock, the top of the screen says I'm in Firefox, but all that happens is the "spinning beach ball of death". So I have to force quit Firefox.

This has happened before but I didn't make a note of which applications were open at the time.

Have you heard of this problem before? Any suggestions? (Maybe it can't be prevented, and force quit is the only solution?)

Thanks.

D.

Hi Dolna;

What version of Firefox are you using? I gave up on Firefox 2 because I found it buggy. So have others. See this article for instance:

Is Firefox on Mac Unusable?

O'ReillyNet's Jeremy Jones says:

I'm running Firefox 2.0.0.6 on my (relatively) new (intel) Mac. Problem is that Firefox locks up several times a day. I found a forum which suggested disabling the anti-phishing functionality. Several people seemed to have benefited from said disabling.

For the full commentary visit here:

Personally, I just went back to SeaMonkey, which uses the same rendering engine as FireFox, but which I find a lot more stable, although it doesn't have all the FireFox bells and whistles. I also use Opera.

You might also try Netscape 9, which also uses the Firefox technology but may be less buggy.

Microsoft Office 2004, OS X And Fonts

From iGreg

This is the first I noticed that if I install Office this will also install 60 new fonts. From my past experience having lots of fonts can be problematic. I particularly remember this in the OS 9 days.

Are all 60 of these fonts required for Office to work? If not, can I not simply delete the fonts? I prefer not to load up on fonts.

I would rather see applications have their own fonts turn on when you start up that application and turn off when the application is not active.

___

Hi iGreg;

Apple touts the fact that more than 50 fonts install by default with OS X as a feature, but few of us will ever need to use more then a small fraction of them.

Having lots of fonts loaded up is a lot less fraught with potential difficulties than it was with OS 9.

You can remove or disable fonts using Font Book, which is a font management application that also installs with OS X, and doing so will improve application startup times and make the font menu less cluttered.

Check the Font Book Help file for instructions. It's pretty straightfoirward.
