Question about Preview...

From Kevin Shaffer

Hi there:

I'm curious about a difference between the Preview application that I noticed; the Panther version has a "Tool Mode" menu item, so the user can choose a grab-hand, or drag to crop, and can switch. I see this (and it also is available as a custom menu item) in Panther, but do not see any sign of it in Tiger 10.4.10. It is not in the custom menu, either.

Could you tell me if this is 'normal' for Tiger's version of Preview? I'm considering upgrading the OS in one computer to Tiger, and I use Preview to edit images, but don't see this Tool Mode selector in the other computer's Preview in Tiger. Is this normal? Did they change it?!

I like Panther, and have had that running in my iMac G4 1.25 since it was purchased, over three years. But some software updates and security fixes probably won't be as likely as time goes on, since Panther is becoming more obsolete. But Tiger may be the last upgrade in this iMac G4; since I don't see Leopard as a viable move, & I have a retail Tiger installer.

With Mac OS X becoming more and more internet dependant, it is hard to see going into something that'd be happiest with some broadband ISP; and costs for DSL are still high. If there were less costly internet and wireless phone options, the iPhone could be the ideal portable computer. Maybe with a pair of wearable eyescreen glasses as a display? wink

[Well, anyway, I'm not sure about upgrading the iMac to Tiger since the installer disc was reluctant to do anything in the computer when tried last year. 10.4.0 wouldn't boot the Mac. I have a complete backup clone of the computer's hard drive contents on a FireWire external. So short of making a hardware problem, I could recover from a problematic installation but would prefer to have a Tiger boot disc, if I were to install it.]

Best regards,
Kevin

Hi Kevin;

I think there were some changed to Preview with the Tiger version, but it's been so long now since I used Panther that I can't clearly recall.

I just checked in Tiger Preview, and there is no sign of the "Tool Mode" menu item you mention. It's not something I ever used in the Panther version. I assume its absence is noraml in Tiger.

If you want a great little image editor that has a lot more fratures and flexibility than Preview, is fast, works really well, and is happily free, try Toyviewer:
http://www7a.biglobe.ne.jp/~ogihara/software/OSX/toyv-eng.html

Tiger should work really well on your 1.25 GHz iMac. It is just fine on my 550 MHz G4-upgraded Pismo PowerBooks and G3 iBook, and your machine is well above the minimum spec. for Leopard as well.

Not sure why you're having installer issues, or why your iMac refuses to boot from the 10.4 DVD, but that is not normal.

Re: question about Preview...

From Kevin Schaeffer

Hey Charles:

Thanks for the reply, I did find out in my reading online there supposedly a way to grab and move an image (non-pdf) around in the Preview window, ie: if image is too large for window, in Panther's Preview, you can use the Grab tool from the Tool Mode; but in Tiger, you don't have the Tool Mode at all. I've heard one has to hold down the spacebar and click/drag on the image to move it in the window.

Too bad older OSX apps couldn't be used in newer OSX versions; bet that'd throw a few monkies and their toolboxes into the Mac OS X works, huh? wink

Been snowy here, not alot, along with some larger storms. We often get large storms here; some 800 miles wide, as part of the North Pacific and mixing of source content.Your image didn't want to open (not in default Preview, nor in Google) so I'm not sure what that's about. Somewhere I have an older version of Toyviewer; the one for Panther 10.3.9. Probably installed and in the apps folder. I may try opening w/ that.

Best regards!
- Kevin

DEVONthink & Leopard

From Bruce Williamson

Charles,

Just found this tidbit in Apple Matters (Mac OS X Leopard: Beautiful, by Chris Howard, Nov 07, 2007):

"Databased applications, such as DEVONThink, can use a lot of Time Machine destination drive space, especially if they change regularly. However, Time Machine only keeps hourly backups for the previous 24 hours, so it’s not going to blow out of control if you have enough space on your destination drive. DEVON Technologies has also advised me they are working on a new data system for DEVONThink that will store files individually in Finder and so negate that issue."

Hi Bruce;

Thanks. I was aware of the issue, but not the details you've provided.

Good to hear that the DEVON Technologies folks are on the case.

Re: Why Apple Would Be Nuts To License Leopard For Windows PCs

From Kevin

Ah - Apple already sells Window capable machines. All Intel-Macs can run Windows with or without OS X. Ironicly thanks to Apple's self-created drivers, their computers run Windows even better than other PC"s. I even know a few people who have Intel-Macs and only run XP on their computers.

Hi Kevin;

Yes, all true, but what I was referring to in the article is Apple hypothetically licensing the Mac OS to run on Windows PC machines, not Windows running on Macs, which of course it now does.

Re: Why Apple Would Be Nuts To License Leopard For Windows PCs

From Kevin;

Hello Charles,

While the title of your article mentions licensing and you state your desire for sexy PC'S, nowhere in Marc Zeedar's report or even in the article from Adrian Kingsley-Hughes which started the thread in the first place is licensing mentioned. Both quotes in your story state "Windows-based Macs".

The real tale is that Adrian Kingsley-Hughes should be taken to task for not knowing what he is writing about. Marc who should know better, just fell into the trap of being baited by a PC guy writing about Apple.

Apple is smart - they offer a personal computer that is capable of running windows but avoid having to officially support said computer when it runs Windows. I honestly believed that Steve Jobs is pragmatic. If at any time he feels that "OS X" is hurting business he would drop it. Their products sell because they are sexy. That I think is the real reason for people who are "switching".

___

Hi Kevin;

Point taken, and I agree with you. Especially with the Leopard release, Windows support is already suffuciently there in the Mac.

However Marc and Adrian got me thinking about the widely advocated in some circles concept of licensing the Mac OS to the PC platform, since wouldn't any "Mac" that couldn't run the Mac OS be oxymoronic?

Mac611 - Mobile Mac Support Announced

From Dave Merten

Greetings,

My name is Dave Merten, founder of an online Apple User Group called Mac Owners Support Group, aka MacOSG. I'm also the former 'Focus on Mac Support' guide at About.com, and presently am editor of the 'MacOSG Support Corner' column at Macsimum News.

I’ve recently developed a new 'mobile Mac support' concept designed for an Apple iPhone and iPod touch. It's called Mac611, and is a 'mobile support' extension of MacOSG. It can be accessed at 'mac611.com.'

You can read all about it and how it works in my latest article at Macsimum News.
