iPod makes Mac OS X on Intel possible?[/url]
Startup issue
From Adam Rush
Please help!!! G4 Dual 800, 1 drive OS9 the other OS. I used my OS9 drive as my startup, and now can't get back to my OSX drive. when restarting using holding down option key, I see the drive but when I click the right arrow the system freezes , even after running utilities off the disk.. I zapped PRAM and now can't get back !!!!! Help !!! please.
Hi Adam;
This could be so many different things. If I were on site, I would try running disk diagnostic and repair programs like Disk Warrior, DiskGuardian, Norton, TechTool Pro to see what that turned up.
Have you tried booting from a CD or external drive?
By coincidence, Apple just released a revised Knowledge Base article on Macs that won't start up in OS X. You can find it here:

Perhaps it will help.

Hi Charles.
Thanks a lot for your comments.
Could you please allow me one last question, which I would value the most: What would be your personal choice for simple and good financial program. Also I don't need double-entry accounting. Though I am most satisfied with other Mac apps, which I use, for instance OmniOuliner, Omnigraffle, Drop Drawers and others, I have some bad luck with the financial ones. I tried iBank, iCash, KuConta, Money and some others, leaving me unsatisfied. Which one you use personally? My most warm regards and many thanks,
Lad.
Hi Lad;
To be honest, the one I use personally is very low tech. It's cheap, never crashes, and has a flat learning curve. I call it "Pencil and Paper 1.0."
However, of the software finance applications I've checked out, I would say that Liquid Ledger suits me the best.

Hi Charles,
The piece you mention today--Technology Lets Garage Studios Challenge Hollywood--is on the same theme as an article I wrote last month, but my focus is on how new creative software technology is impacting culture as a whole, and education in particular. You can have a look at it here:

Thanks Eric;
Good article.

I stumbled across the following article while browsing. If I remember correctly, you are not a PDA user, but there might be some other readers who would take notice. All the links in the article are interesting, too.
This will also allow me to practice my HTML URL posting technique:

Hi Mike;
You're correct. I don't have a PDA (not that I have anything against them)
Thanks for the link.

iPod makes Mac OS X on Intel possible?
From Christopher Neher
Interesting concept:
http://www.macdailynews.com/opinion_comments.php?id=P2274_0_2_0_C
" I believe analysts and others are missing the big picture: iPod success paves the way for Mac OS X on X86. People have argued for years for and against the release of Mac OS X on Intel (and AMD) commodity hardware, but Apple derives such a large portion of its revenue from hardware that doing so could potentially damage the company beyond repair. But, what if Apple replaces that lost Mac hardware revenue with iPod revenue?
"Steve Jobs would then be free to drop what amounts to a hydrogen bomb on Microsoft. Mac OS X that runs on "regular" off-the-shelf x86 hardware. Or partner with a Sony, for example - to insure quality. Years before "Longhorn" even comes close to shipping. Moo."
Steve Jack
Moo indeed.
Thanks for the link.

In response to the person who could not boot in mac osx after booting in OS9 as startup disk, he should be able to boot in OSX by holding down the X key when he restarts. Once there, he can use the startup preference panel to change the startup disk to Mac OSX volume. He could also boot in OS9 and then go to the control panel startup disk and change to the Mac OSX volume.
