Email and Leopard
From Peter
Hi Charles,
My POP 3 account in Entourage is working fine with Leopard both at home and on the road. I send and receive large attachments many times daily, and there have been no problems. I will not torture you by detailing my Internet speeds.
My wife and I considered (or dreamed of) moving up your way from Massachusetts. Internet access is always one of our determining factors, and your area falls far short of our needs.
Peter
Hi Peter;
I strongly suspect that being stuck with a slow (even for dialup) Internet connection is a big part of my email problems with Leopard, although that doesn;t explain to my satisfaction why email works perfectly fine over the same network in Tiger and all previous Internet-supporting Mac OS versions. The OS 10.5.2 update hasn't helped either.
However, I must remedy any misapprehension about broadband availability in Nova Scotia myh comments may have caused. Eighty percent of the population has broadband access, in many locales both DSL and cable availability. Even in this rural backwater, folks nine miles distant in opposite directions and seven miles in a third have DSL service. I just happen to be in a null zone with a very small population that doesn't justify a business case for bringing service here.
However, the federal and provincial governments are financing a subsidy program and promise that broadband will be available across the province by the end of 2009, so there is hope. It's just tough waiting.

Whither Odysseus?
From CubaMark
Charles,
Hope you're coping with that crazy winter this year...
Regarding Eudora: Any word on the Odysseus project? I need something to keep me from jumping on board OS X Mail (the data-detectors, integration with the rest of the OS, etc., are starting to pull me in...)
Cheers from here,
Mark
Hi Mark;
Well, I had a bad fall on ice five weeks ago and injured my back. Just began to recover normal mobility last week. Other than that (
As for Odysseus, the latest Status Update progress report I've been able to find Dec 27, 2007, at which point these elements in Phase 2 were at:
Hybrid Storage Implementation - Complete
Multiple Accounts - 90% Complete
Receiving Mail - 80% Complete
Sending Mail - 80% Complete
It was also noted that development is a few weeks behind projections, but work is proceeding.
You can look in at this forum for updates:

And at this link.
I remain hopeful.

Re: Mac OS X 10.5.2 Up And Running - A Bit Of Good News But Some Major Disappointment
From Dylan
I'm sorry bet trying to run Leopard on a G4 1.33 is part of your problem. I tried it for a week only then downgraded to Tiger. There is just not enough processor to push Leopard. On my intel Macbook pros that I own I have never had anything but the best to say about Leopard. Yes there have been a few quirks but it also runs like it should. Sorry but Leopard is for intels.
Hi Dylan;
I'm inclined to agree with you, and indeed recently posted a column musing on that very point, the summary paragraph of which read:
"However, I think maybe the only real cure will be upgrading to an Intel Mac, although I still am hoping that the OS 10.5.2 update, whenever it arrives, will improve Leopard performance on this old G4 machine."
It hasn't.
However, Apple is marketing Leopard as supporting PPC machines back to 867 MHz G4s and my PowerBook is nearly half a GHz faster than that. I have no complaint about Finder response, which is about the same as with Tiger, and the main bugs plaguing me are slow POP3/SMTP email in/out throughput, and stability of Spaces, neither of which should be contingent on processor speed. My ancient Mac Plus running System 7 sends and received email faster than Leopard, at least over my rural dialup Internet connection.

Safari 3 Now Supported On Yahoo Mail
From Cathy
Hi Charles,
I just read this on the MacObserver Web site. This is good news for me since I use Yahoo Mail for my primary e-mail account.
http://www.macobserver.com/article/2008/02/13.11.shtml
Hi Cathy;
Yes indeed; great news for Safari-users with Yahoo! mail accounts.
I'm a Google Gmail aficionado myself ( absolutely amazing spam filters and it has a "Basic HTML" interface option that takes pity on those of us still stuck with dialup connections).

Re: Safari 3 now supported on Yahoo Mail
From Cathy
A number of people have suggested I switch to Gmail, but I have more than 1GB in legacy email messages in the Yahoo! Mail account I can't just abandon that. I'll have to look at the options in Gmail to see if there is a way to import my Yahoo email messages into it.
My worst fear would be to see Microsoft go through with an acquisition of Yahoo and discontinue Mac compatibility with Yahoo! Mail, although I can't imagine that would be a good business decision for Microsoft. It would generate a firestorm of bad publicity.
Hi Cathy;
Yes, that would definitely be an inhibition to switching, which is one of the major reasons why I resist switching to Webmail and remain a POP 3 email aficionado, and even with Gmail I use the POP 3 support option and download all messages to my hard drive. Thanks to Eudora's incredibly efficient archiving system, my entire email history dating back to 1997 is contained in one 336 MB Mailbox Folder!
I'm wondering if there is any mail forwarding option you could use to move your archives

Test Driving The Camino 1.5.5 Web Browser
From Elaine
Hi Charles,
What you didn't say in the review is whether or not you plan to use Camino as your back-up browser to Safari.
I'm asking because we share similar Mac preferences, the WallStreet PowerBook (mine is still functional and comes in handy to run an OS 9 application, even though I installed a CPU upgrade so that it runs 10.2.8) and a long history with Netscape. Firefox is still my alternate to Safari 3 which is finally a great browser and my current first choice.
So are you switching from Firefox to Camino or "not yet"? btw, I'm still using Thunderbird for mail and keep hoping that Apple's Mail.app will become as good a mail client as Safari 3 is a browser.
Best regards,
Elaine
Hi Elaine;
I really can't say that I have a strong preference either way. Both Camino and Firefox are great browsers - fast and dependable. Camino has a prettier interface and supports OS X Services, so that might be the tipping point for some folks. Firefox has more plugins for folks who like plugins.
Like you, I'm using Safari 3 a lot these days - the first Safari version I've found palatable, and it's closely integrated with Leopard, although the OS 10.4.11 version is good too. I'm still not a fan, though, and probably use Opera as much or more. I especially like Opera's downloads manager, and it finesses images on/off conveniently, which is important for me since the WannaBe text browser isn't an option with Leopard.
My WS still works great as well, although my wife, who was using it for the past couple of years, has moved up to the G3 iBook.

Eudora 5.0 Email Software And Dropped Connections
From Gary
CWMoore:
My Internet service provider had and still has a problem with authentication. It seems that their server and my Eudora 5.0 will not communicate sometimes and even drops my call to his server.
Have You Heard Of This Happening With 5.0.
Thanks
Gary
Hi Gary;
Not specifically, but Eudora 5 is getting pretty ancient and it wouldn;t surprise me if compatibility issues are cropping up.
I'm guessing that the reason you haven't upgraded to Eudora 6 is that you're running an older Mac OS version that does not support 6. However, if that's not the case, I would suggest upgrading.
You can get it here:

Charles, I’m a daily reader of your site. I adopted Opera on your suggestion and like it, but now feel locked into it, not knowing how to read my Wand passwords. Do you know how to access them?
