Easyfind
From Chris Long
C:
Have you tried this? i haven't -- looks interesting, tho.
With EasyFind 3.6, users can now search all, all local or all removable volumes directly from the search pop-up menu and sort the found files more accurately. Also, the general performance has been improved and a few minor bugs have been fixed.
Compared to Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger's Spotlight, EasyFind offers a full range of advantages for people who want to seriously find files – accurately. EasyFind finds files and folders without indexing, supports read-only and removable volumes and searches even files and directories that Spotlight doesn't, for example hidden files, files in packages or files and folders in the system directories. Additionally, EasyFind offers much more powerful operators and supports Unix-style wildcards for more accurate search runs. In short: EasyFind finds what the user is looking for, not what Spotlight has coincidentally indexed.

Hi Chris;
Yes, I've checked it out. it's very good, and (hooray!) does not require indexing. However, I personally remain partial to SpeedSearch X, possibly just from Long familiarity. Both programs provide an excellent alternatives to the ponderous indexed content search engines.

Spotlight Replacement for Pismo
From Marshall Korschun
Thanks for your comments concerning Tiger and older laptops.
If I decide to stay with Panther for my Pismo, do you have a software "Spotlight substitute" to recommend?
Sincerely,
H. Marshall Korschun
Hi Mr. Korschun;
Two very useful content search utilities that don't require indexing are:
EasyFind 3.6
EasyFind is an alternative to or supplement of Spotlight/Sherlock that finds files, folders or contents in any file without the need for indexing - and therefore immediately.
This is especially useful if you are tired of slow or impossible indexing, outdated or corrupted indices or if you are just looking for missing features like case sensitive or insensitive search, Boolean operators, wildcards or searching for phrases. In addition, EasyFind uses multithreading and is therefore very responsive even with multiple search processes running, provides contextual menus and Mac OS X Services, and displays the location of each item in a separate column for a better overview. Finally EasyFind uses little memory, supports drag-and-drop and the clipboard and optionally finds invisible items or items within packages.
Version 3.5 circumvents Mac OS X bugs by implementing its own (and four times faster) wildcard interpreter, supports wildcards specifying or excluding a range or choice of characters ("[...]") and displays the full pathname for found items in tooltips. Version 3.6 adds the possibility to scan all, local or removable volumes to the search pop-up menu, improves the overall performance and fixes a few minor bugs.

SpeedSearch 2.2
My main hard drive search tool is the wonderful little shareware application, SpeedSearch, which, as its name indicates, is very fast, and which, like EasyFind, happily requires no indexing. It also searches the entire content of all documents in the folders selected. It is very flexible, and supports searching any folder that is dragged to its Start Folder window individually.
SpeedSearch uses WASTE to display search results. The size of search results is limited only by application memory, and the colors used to display search results are user-configurable. SpeedSearch displays results similar to UNIX grep -- each line that matches the search string is displayed in the results area. And like grep, SpeedSearch supports regular expressions.
Features:
Searches a folder hierarchy or one or more volumes. Searches 'TEXT' files by default. Users can define sets of file types to search. Uses the WASTE text engine to display search results. Regular expression matching (like UNIX grep) is available, using extended regular expressions. Supports "goto line" for the CodeWarrior, BBEdit and Alpha editors. Macintosh, DOS and UNIX file formats are handled, transparent to the user. Uses Appearance Manager controls.
Uses Navigation Services for file dialogs. Uses offscreen drawing (user-configurable) for flicker-free updates. Search results are limited in size only by the amount of memory given to SpeedSearch. Search results are displayed as they are found. Search results are displayed in color, which is user-configurable. Search results are displayed in a font and size that is user-configurable. Search results can be searched for a specified string. Search results can be saved to and loaded from a file. Search results text can be copied straight from the results area -- using the copy command or drag and drop. Functions such as text scrolling and window resizing remain available during a search. Files not containing matches of the search string can be displayed (useful for finding files not containing, for example, a company copyright notice). Files and folders of matches can be opened by SpeedSearch. Patterns can be specified to limit the search to only file names matching the patterns. The start folder can be set using drag and drop. Start folders can be added to a menu for easy access at a later time. Multiple search windows can be opened. Extensive Balloon Help is available for all windows.
To use SpeedSearch, select a start folder using the dialog box or drag and drop a folder on the Start Folder icon in the SpeedSearch window and specify the string to search for, then start the search. Any files containing text that match the search string are displayed, along with the lines that matched, in the results area. You can search in either a single folder or in one or more volumes.
A Start Folder Favorites popup-menu is located to the right of the Start Folder field. You can set the start folder by selecting an item from this menu. Recently searched folders are placed at the top if this menu. The maximum number of recently searched folders is set in the preferences.
Instead of specifying a single start folder, you can also search one or more entire volumes. To specify the volumes, select the "Select Start Volumes " item in the Search menu. This will bring up a dialog that allows you to specify the volumes to be searched.
You specify the string you want to search for in the field labeled "Search For:". By default, the text is searched for exactly as entered. However, you can have SpeedSearch treat the string as case-insensitive, as a whole word, or as a regular expression. The following criteria can be specified:
Ignore Case
Entire Word
Regular Expression
NOT Matching
Other Items in the SpeedSearch Window include: Search Nested Folders
Search Folder Aliases
Search File Aliases
Autoscroll While Searching
Search File Types
Sound When Done
List First Match Only
The Search Filenames Menu
The Start Folder Favorites Menu
SpeedSearch is $10.00 shareware. Registered users of a previous version are entitled to a free upgrade.

Baton Mail v0.9.1b for Apple Mac OS 7.5.5 & Eudora Pro v3.1.3
From Geraint Searle
Great Reviews on Apple Mac Email Clients.
I was wondering if you could help;
I have Eudora Pro v3.1.3 running on an Apple Mac SE/30 with 32 Mb & 2.0Gb HDD with Apple Mac OS 7.5.5, the problem the current release of Baton Mail v0.9.8b - which only runs on Apple Mac OS 7.6.1 or above.
I have been told that an earlier release of Baton Mail v0.9.1b would work with Apple Mac OS 7.5.5 - But where do you find such a version, I have emailed http://www.mythtech.net, no reply - Does anyone have such a copy ?
I have been able to configure an Apple Mac IIci with 128Mb, 2.0Gb with Mac OS 7.6.1 with Eudora Pro v4.0 with Baton Mail v0.9.8b with no problems.
Regards
Geraint
Hi Geraint;
Unfortunately, I haven't a clue where you might find that earlier version of Baton Mail. Maybe someone in readerland will know.
In the meantime, here is something try. I didn't like the performance of OS 7.6.1 on my old Mac LC 520, so I reinstalled OS 7.5.5. However, that caused a problem with some sort of Internet incompatibility. It's so long ago that I can't remember the exact details, but what I do remember is that I was able to successfully install the Open Transport extensions from 7.6.1 into 7.5.5 and it worked great. Still does to this day. I don't know if that would effectively address your problem, but I have a suspicion that it might.

There are some interesting links and specifications for the DSLR series of Canon D-Rebel including the firmware update hack link to add features originally lacking in the first Digital Rebel that make it more desirable (esp. now they are reduced in cost substantially.)
