USB 2.0 device to Firewire port?
From Karin
Dear Charles,
I'm considering buying a film scanner, and most are now using USB 2.0. I could just use a 1.1 port, but for film scanning it would be interminably s-l-o-w -- and I'm not planning on doing a few slides, more like 3000+. I was wondering if anyone has figured out how to run from a USB 2.0 device to a FireWire 400 port instead. The iPod Dock does this in reverse, so it must be possible.
I did investigate adding USB 2.0 to my computer, but I don't think I can. The iMac G3 600 MHz doesn't have a PCI slot that I can find. Is there a hub that does the conversion?
If you can suggest any solutions, I'd be very grateful!
Best,
Karin
Hi Karin;
To the best of my knowledge, there are no direct FireWire to USB 2.0 adapters. If you had a Power Mac tower or a PowerBook, you would be able to use a PCI or PCMCIA adapter, but iMac and iBook owners are out of luck as far as expansion slots go.
However......
I have been engaged in a major slide-scanning project such as you're proposing for the past several months, and both of the scanners I have a Konica Minolta Dimage 5400 and an Epson Perfection Photo 4870 support both USB and FireWire, as, I would assume, many other scanner models.

Just buy a scanner with FireWire support, and you're on your way.

Toast and DVD burning
From G. Slusher
According to Roxio's site, Toast 5 Titanium can burn DVDs on OS 9. (Toast 6 is for OS X only.) Your reader might try inserting a DVD-R into his drive and see what Toast Lite does. Even Toast 6 Titanium is not set for the disk type in advance. If you click on the "Data" option, it waits until you insert a blank disk to figure out the type of disk and size. I've burned several data DVDs that way with my 20-inch iMac's SuperDrive.
Thanks George;

Fonts in Opera
From Visionaerie
The only immediate issue I noticed, was that it takes a long time if you want to change all the fonts in Opera. In Camino, you only have to change two of them, so that is an efficiency advantage. In the future, the Opera developers would be wise to add a setting where you could "enforce" your selected font setting on all the different subsets. I believe Internet Explorer has something similar to that.
Sometimes it is good for future-oriented people like us to learn things from the past -- and then keep your browser choices diversified to find the best fit.
Yup;
I usually have at least three different browsers open.

Fragrance toxicity
From Marion Rosenau
I want to know any information you have about fragrance toxicity and any class action suits that exist against the manufacturers?
I am severely poisoned by fragrances and it is ruining my life on a daily basis.
Do you know of any class action suits?
Marion Rosenau
Hi Marion;
Not specifically, but you might want to contact the Chemical Injury Litigation Project.
Their notice says:
CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT
If enough individuals are willing to participate in a lawsuit against manufacturers of fabric softeners, each individual may be entitled to receive a damage award. Consider joining a lawsuit if you or a dependent have become ill when exposed to a fabric softener.
Exposure can result through inhalation or skin contact from the exhaust of dryers or from treated fabrics (e.g., clothes, sheets, towels), which are in close proximity to you.
If you are using a fabric softener (liquid or sheets) - whether fragrant, unscented, or fragrance-free - STOP!! Save the container as evidence, and take this article to your doctor to document your symptoms.
If you suffer symptoms from exposures to fabric softeners: provide a brief description of your symptoms; give product name if known; include your name, address and phone number; enclose a self-addressed, stamped envelope and mail to:

iLife 4 Cannot Be Installed On Original iBooks
From Clifton Patrick
Greetings Charles,
iLife '05 Cannot Be Installed On Original iBooks
A new Apple Knowledge Base Article says:
"iLife '05 requires a computer with a display resolution of at least 1024 x 768 pixels. This means that iLife '05 cannot be installed on the original iBooks. The original iBooks are Blueberry, Tangerine, or Graphite in color. The iBook (FireWire) computers, which are Indigo, Key Lime, and Graphite in color, are also affected.
If you attempt to install iLife '05 on one of these iBooks, you'll see an alert message:
iLife '05 cannot be installed on this computer. This software requires a computer with a higher-resolution screen.
I got the same message installing iPhoto 4 on our 366 mhz Graphite iBook - so no surprise here.
I enjoy your work! Thanks,,
Clif
