Re: How fast?

From John Dennis

Thanks for the information. I could have sworn I saw a page on LowEndMac that said that Tiger would run well on a blue and white with 256 of RAM.

I may install Gentoo or YDL on this and just use one of these. I do not like how long it takes YDL to come out with updates though. I read another website that it takes them a long time to come out with updates which I have found out myself when I have version 3 loaded. They suggested Debian which I will not install since it seems to difficult to install and I do not know enough about Linux to install it.

I like YDL in how easy it is to install and that every thing is included but I do not like the fact that they are slow on releasing updates for some of the applications as they become available. Gentoo is harder to install but has more of the programs up to date then YDL.

I may try this as well since they both seem to include gtkpod which will allow me to hook up my iPod and move the music to it. I hear that the graphical ones are slow if you use KDE or Gnome but I am willing to try it. I will let you know how things go. I should get the Blue and White sometime next week. It will not have enough RAM on it so will have to upgrade this but I got the 450MHz model so that should last me a little while.

Hi John;

"Running well" is a subjective evaluation. A family member was running Tiger last spring on a Umax S-900 with a Sonnet 500 MHz G3 upgrade card and declared the performance tolerable, But that machine was being used mainly for email and web surfing with only a handful of applications open at a time, so perhaps it didn't lag to badly. However, it has now been replaced with an iMac G3 450 MHz, which is peppier ( faster hard drive and system bus I presume).

Anyway, as I noted previously, I find my machines starving for RAM with 640 MHz installed respectively. It depends on why you do the computers. I wouldn't even try to get my work done in OS X with us than 512 MB of RAM installed.

Linux ( Or the classic Mac OS) should be a different story entirely. Running OS 9 on my WallStreet PowerBook, I find that one 192 MB of RAM is more than adequate.

I will be very interested to hear of your progress.

Camino 1.0 Beta

From Richard Briscoe

Charles,

Thanks for your response.

My comments are not about the Bookmark Manager, which is just fine, but the lack of a sidebar for navigation. For example, when going through a series of news websites with a browser that has a sidebar it is a simple matter to directly click on the links. That is were Safari, Camino and the others are less convenient. So far as a bookmark manager is concerned, there is no reason I am aware of why a browser may not, indeed should not, have both a sidebar for navigation and a (full page) bookmark manager. It is this general misconception, that a browser may have only one or the other, that was the reason for my observation.

Best Regards,
Richard

Hi Richard;

Thanks for the clarification, and my apologies for being slow on the uptake.

You should really give Shiira a try. It's an actively developed Safari clone that has exactly what you describe: bookmarks in both a traditional menu and in a sidebar as well. or more specifically in a Cocoa drawer, which is even better, because it does not impose itself on the browser window. The Shiira drawer also displays the history and downloads by tabbed selection. Slick.

Re: Matthew Smith's hot PowerBook...

From Martin Step

Charles,

If Matthew's PowerBook is running hotter now than when it was new, there is another possibility that you might want to mention. Perhaps it's just full of dust bunnies and simply needs a good cleaning.

This is not a terribly difficult task - there are several how-to guides on the internet. Or, any technician could do it.

Please keep up the good work. I read your columns every day.

BTW, I spoke to you a few months ago about whether the coming Mac-Intel PowerBooks would delay near term purchases of the current version. I said I would get one of the last release of the G4 version to preserve my software investment a little longer. Well, I have, and no regrets! It's a great machine!

Cheers,
Martin

Hi Martin;

Good suggestion, and well worth checking out.

Another possibility is that as you may have recently upgraded to OS 10.4. I found that both of my production laptops the and running significantly hotter after I upgraded from Panther to Tiger, making use of the ChillMat (quiet) on hot summer days necessary in order to keep the Internal fan (not quiet) from cycling.

Delighted to hear that you are enjoying your new PowerBook. A prudent decision for folks with large software libraries, especially if they want to run Classic applications.

Thanks for reading!

Printers and Linux

From John M. Dennis

Now I know why I could not get my printer to work on Linux when I had YDL installed on it. This page says not to buy Canon printers unless you want to buy Turbo Print which I may have to do. It has a test version so I can try this out before buying it. I may also have more luck as some of these printers may be used by others as well so I will have to search and see what I can find out. I found this page by searching on google for Linux and supported printers.

Bookmarks

From Robert Campbell

I was reading the letter sent to you regarding the difference (or lack thereof) between the bookmarks page in Camino and Safari.

One big difference for me is that Safari's bookmarks are searchable in Spotlight. I don't click through menus that often. I open Spotlight with the keyboard command, type a little of what I'm looking for and what I usually want is the top hit, then boom, it's open in Safari.

Hi Robert

Good point. Thanks for your comment.
