Mac OS 9.2.x questions

From Eric Matthieu

I have updates to OS 9.1, 9.2.1, and now 9.2.2 burned to a bootable CD. I finally took the long overdue step of updating my Pismo to 9.2.1 this morning. I probably should've done a clean install of 9.0.4 before doing so, but I took the easy way out and just ran the updater to 9.2.1 over my existing system folder. Everything seems to be working fine. In fact, the computer seems noticeably quicker. Compared to 9.1, 9.2.1 seems to use about 20MB more RAM (despite my efforts to pare down superfluous items in the extensions folder), but other than that I have no complaints.

Bearing in mind that I'm not planning on installing OS X on this machine for the foreseeable future, should I bother updating to 9.2.2? Will it be any faster or more stable? Any concerns with software compatibility?

As always, thanks for your help.
Eric

Hi Eric;

My recommendation would be to install OS 9.2.2. My WallStreet was pretty stable in all of the OS 9 versions save for 9.0.4 which it didnlt like for some reason, but it's rock-stable in OS 9.2.2. I reboot maybe once a month. I've run into no problems with any software that I use, including some ancient stuff.

OS X seems happier with 9.2.2 for Classic mode as well.

YDL woes

From John M. Dennis

I was having trouble installing YDL 3 on my Wallstreet so I decided to give up and last night I reinstallied OS 10.2 and then upgraded it to 10.2.8. I would have not done this before I had broadband as it takes to long to do the combo update. I might try again to install YDL when version 4 comes out. I installed YDL 3 on my iMac just before it died and if I could get it fixed then I would have YDL on it. I may just buy a used computer at some point in the future and mess with it. I will let you know how things go.

Thank You,
John M. Dennis

Advice

From Alvin Chan

Thank you for your time. I just displayed the CC, have not made success with the PowerCC (has become a display arranged according to height: LC575, CC then SE) but I'm writing because I read your iMac slot-loading upgrade and would like advice.

I'm from the Philippines and my iMac is a 350 / 1GB / 7GB / OS X 10.3

I've spent since January: OS 10.3 and 1GB memory

I'm gonna be studying Carrara 3D Basics (3 month demo) as well as photoediting using PhotoStudio and as an artist I'm also into digital painting. I also plan to study Maya 5 Learning edition, Photoshop, XCode, Codewarrior, Flash and Illustrator (latest versions) . I do plan to make 3D animations, Flash animations as well as 3D games.

If you got $400, which is the best option you think (will be bought in the US, shipping to the Philippines not included):

1. Upgrade to a G4 with Technowarehouse's iTech DV

2. Buy Carrara 3D Basics and Wacom Graphire3 * (500+ resolution, includes Painter Classic), a larger hardisk (how big can this iMac take and what speed is the safest)?

3. Buy Carrara 3D Basics and Wacom Intuos2 * (1000+ resolution), a larger hardisk
(*)or MacAlly pen tablet (requires AAA battery) instead of Wacom

4. Just buy Carrara Studio (more features than 3D Basics)

5. Buy Carrara 3D Basics, iLife just to get Garageband for music, Graphire 3, a larger hardisk

6. 2MP digicam*, scanner* and older tablets like Graphire2* or Intuos1* (*)or older model digicam, scanners and MacAlly tablet instead of Wacom

7. Leave it as it is, use open source for 3D, photoediting, sound and illustration. Recommendation on any open source or freeware is welcomed.

8. Any other combination on what to buy

Thanks again for your time.

Hi Alvin;

I'm anything but an authority on high-end graphics and 3D software, and I'm barely competent in Photoshop Elements 2. Consequently, it would be presumptuous for me to attempt to advise you in this particular purchase dilemma beyond a few very general observations.

If you plan to seriously address this field, I think you will be happiest with a G4 (or G5) processor and as much RAM as you can afford. You also will want a lot of hard disk capacity and a powerful graphics accelerator card.

I have a Wacom Graphire2 tablet, and it's excellent, but as I said, I'm a total amateur at computer graphics.

Perhaps someone out in readerland will have suggestions.

People will do anything

From John M. Dennis

I guess you can look at this as people can do anything or near the end.

Thank You,

Technology gets under clubbers' skin

By Chetna Purohit

(CNN) -- Queuing to get into one nightclub in Spain could soon be a thing of the past for regular customers thanks to a tiny computer chip implanted under their skin.

The technology, known as a VeriChip, also means nightclubbers can leave their cash and cards at home and buy drinks using a scanner. The bill can then be paid later...

iVCD vs. QuickTime Pro

From Dan Johnson

According to the folks at Mireth QT PRO is more of an editing application not a VCD producing app. I tired iVCD and found it works quite nicely. It is strictly for making a VCD, no editing, just bring your editied files and iVCD will make a VCD for you. My $40 DVD player played both the VCD and SVCD with out any problem.
