Request for technical assistance - FireWire housing

From Steven Cades

Charles--

I've been searching the Mac web for help with the following, with no useful results. I'm hopeful that your readers might offer some assistance.

I've inherited my son's G4 Sawtooth, in which we had installed a 160 GB HD for his music files. He's bought himself a nice, fast PowerBook, and I offered to put his big hard drive in an external case with FireWire port. I ended up buying a Kingwin KH-350UF-S, which has both a USB and a FireWire port,

With the HD installed, it worked just fine as a USB drive, but when I used the System Profiler, it returned (under FireWire), "unknown device", which of course the Sawtooth doesn't mount. Kingwin has replaced the case for me, but the replacement behaves identically. The Sawtooth, Btw, is running OS X 10.4.2.

Your kind assistance would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
--Steve Cades

Hi Steve;

Have you tried connecting the external drive to another Mac, preferably running a different version of the Mac OS, to determine whether it is an issue unique to your computer, or whether it is a problem with the drive housing?

I'm not familiar with the Kingwin product, but it may be some sort of compatibility issue.

As you suggest, other readers may have more light to shed on this issue.

Charles--

NFP

As ever, thank you!

While I've tried the FireWire port with a "Mac on a Stick" iMac, it, too, is at 10.4.2. On Monday I'll see how it works with a G4 iMac, which I think is still at Panther. I'll let you know what happens.

The problems of the Kingwin box are--whatever their cause--the inevitable consequence, I guess, of shopping for price. The unit's packaging announces Mac OS X compatibility, but not specifically Tiger. Their e-mail tech support person--whose English capabilities are limited--seems interested in solving the problem. I'll let you know if I get resolution from that end.

Hi Steve;

Theoretically, any FireWire device should work with OS X. in practice, things are sometimes not so cut and dried.

OS X and Windows compatible Notepad?

From Yoram Gerchman

Greetings Charles

Would you have any idea about a Notepad replacement for OS X that has a Windows version? It needs to be able to insert date and time stamps as well as charts images etc. I hope to use it as an electronic lab notebook, but would like to be able to share files with students and colleges...

Thanks Yoram

___

Hi Yoram;

If such an application exists, I have no recollection of ever hearing about it, and some Google searching didn't turn anything up.

There is of course Microsoft Word....... wink

The thought about Word crossed my mind, but I really rather not.

Thanks though.

Flock browser

From Nori Shohara

[No mention of Mac support in the article. CM]

The screen shots are Mac OS X and they claim to be cross-platform:

Hi Nori;

Thanks for the link. It appears that the flock browser it based on the fire Fox engine, and I guess this paragraph Sums it up nicely:

"Additionally, I get asked whether we are cross-platform quite often. We are cross-platform, we have computers of every race and creed in the office (but no emacs users), we like Linux, Mac and some of us even like Windows. I don’t like Windows."

Charles -

It's nice of you to take the time to respond.

I'm looking forward to a little innovation in the browser department and wish the makers of Flock well. I'll be checking it out as soon as they make something available. I'll keep an eye out on Applelinks for the next announcement grin

Something to try

From John M. Dennis

I read about this on another site and would like to see what you think about them since you have talked about digital cameras before and even applications that you like to take care of photos. I would like to see what you think of these. The first link is the article with the link that led me to the second site.

Looks like a cool application, John. Thanks for the links.

Browsers

From George Slusher

Charles:

I re-read your review of OS X browsers. I've tried Opera and Shiira and like some aspects of them. However, one thing that will keep me from using either of them is that they do not use the bookmarks in the address bar autofill. They only use the history. The same is true of Firefox. iCab and Safari do search the bookmarks.

___

Hi George;

Just goes to show that what appeals to one user will go right by another. I had never noticed this issue, but then that I really don't like autofill anyway and try to ignore it.

It's great that there are two good browsers that work the way you like them to.

Printing Applelinks

From: "John M. Dennis

I have noticed as of late that when using print on Applelinks the page gets cut off. It starts to far to the left and thus cuts off the right side of the page. This is for IE for Windows XP that I have to use at work. Some of your articles of late are long and I like to print them out so I can read them and also keep the information for later. I am sure that if we were using Firefox this probably would not be a problem but we are not.

___

Hi John;

I'm not sure what the problem might be, other than Internet Explorer and Windows. :-b

I am forwarding your note to the webmaster.

Opera Pretty nice

From John M. Dennis

It is pretty nice that Opera is now free. I guess another reason for me to upgrade my OS.

Hi John;

Opera is a nice browser. I encourage you to check it out. Some of the features take a little getting used to, but it's worth the effort.
