iPhone Unlocking For Pleasure And Profit
The Register's Tony Smith says:
Editors' Blog Today, I successfully unlocked two iPhones, and they weren't even mine...
Hexus.net head, card carrying gadget freak David Ross, nipped out during a pre-Intel Developer Forum presentation here in San Francisco, and came back with a pair of iPhones. Yes, the European version's going to be announced in London tomorrow, but it's still locked to a single network, and the US model is slightly cheaper.
Now, David's recently been converted to the Way of Mac, but he's here with his Windows laptop, and after a big of Googling complained to me he couldn't find an obvious Windows-centric guide to cutting AT&T out of the iPhone loop.
Being a Mac guy myself, and having already downloaded onto my MacBook Pro a heap of tools for the task - I've got an eye on the iPhone too - I suggested we give it a go there and then.

Apple's Steve Jobs slams 3G phones as iPhone launched with O2
The Telegraph's Dominic White reports:
Apple chief executive Steve Jobs slammed 3G phones for having limited battery life as he launched the iPhone in the UK through an exclusive deal with network operator O2.
O2 is thought to have signed an unprecedented agreement passing around 10pc of all revenues from the iPhone to Apple, whose tough commercial terms some other mobile networks baulked at.

Apple's Cheap-to-Build nano
BusinessWeek's Arik Hesseldahl reports:
When leaked photos of the latest iPod nano first appeared on enthusiast blogs, it quickly gained the nickname "little fatty," owing to the squat shape required to accommodate a wide-screen video display.
But the adjective "fat" could also be used to describe the apparent widening of profit margins on the nano, which has become the most popular member of Apple's iPod lineup in just two years. An analysis of the component costs by the market research firm iSuppli suggests that, despite the addition of a video screen, the new nanos boast the widest margins yet for the line.

Apple iPod classic review
CNET UK's Nate Lanxon reports:
Almost a full two years since its last full-size iPod, Apple has unleashed the iPod classic. Coming in 80GB and 160GB capacities - costing £159 and £229 respectively - the classic can hold a massive archive of music and video. There's no need to pick and choose which music goes with you, even if you rip CDs at the very highest lossless quality. We wasted no time in stress-testing the classic to within millimetres of its life.
The glossy and easily scratched faceplate of previous models has been replaced with an attractive matte texture, either in black or silver - white is no more. The Click Wheel too has been steered from shiny gloss to matte, the result being a less scratch-prone finish. The reflective silver casing is unchanged though, and still easily scuffable - seven days into the classic being used as our 'full-time' MP3 player, several scratches had appeared.

iPhone: An International Sensation?
BusinessWeek's Arik Hesseldahl says:
It's been pretty hard to miss the news that Apple has got the ball rolling on plans to launched the iPhone in the UK with Telefonic's 02 as its carrier partner. Here's the basics: It will sell for 269 pounds or about $535, with service plans ranging from 35 to 55 pounds, and a contract length of 18 months. The different in price is the result of higher distribution costs and taxation differences in the UK. It will launch on Nov. 9. Rumors are running hot and heavy that Orange will be the partner in France and T-Mobile in Germany.
