No iPhone for New Zealand, At Least Officially

The Dominion Post's Greer McDonald reports:

Gadget geeks may not get a chance to take a bite out of Apple's new iPhone - New Zealand's sole GSM carrier has confirmed the

Vodafone spokesman Paul Brislen said yesterday that the telecommunications giant was unlikely to enter negotiations with Apple over the release of the handset, which is sold in the United States and Britain.

"It's a watching brief but it is not on Vodafone New Zealand's road map for the rest of the year, and it could be years before we see it here, if we ever do," he said.....

...some of New Zealand's three million cellphone users have managed to get their hands on the phones, with one Tauranga importer receiving shipments from the US, and a Christchurch business providing a Sim card which allows the iPhone to be used on the Vodafone NZ network.

Review: iPod classic with Software Update 1.0.1

PlayList's Christopher Breen reports:

When the iPod classic and third-generation (3G) iPod nano were first released, many reviewers (including me and my colleague, Dan Frakes) noticed that the two new iPods sported a more-colorful and helpful interface—but we also noticed that interface could be sluggish when drawing artwork. This slow behavior was most noticeable on the iPod classic, most likely for two reasons. With its greater storage capacity—80GB (Best Current Price: $243.00) and 160GB (Best Current Price: $344.00)—it must manage large amounts of artwork. And it has a hard drive, which is slower than the nano's flash memory.

This sluggishness was manifested in interruptions when moving between screens. In addition the click wheel was occasionally unresponsive for a few moments as if the iPod was gathering its wits before allowing you to traverse its menus and commands.

The erratic performance was a major flaw in this initial classic release....

Shortly after the release of these new iPods—and after the classic review was published—Apple issued iPod Software Update 1.0.1 (available via iTunes). In typical Apple fashion, the company provided few details about what benefits the update provided. Our tests, however, revealed two noticeable results.

iPod Classic Troubles Abound

Wired's Charlie Sorrel reports:

It looks like the Quality Control guys were on break when Apple's new batch of iPods was being made. First the Touch, with its dodgy dark screen, and now the iPod Classic. Reports abound on the net, from iTunes locking up XP machines when the Classic is connected, through iPods taking a very long time to eject, to general weirdness, including crashes, lockups and random rebooting.

Hands on Review: Amazon's new DRM-Free MP3 Store

Dvorak Uncensored says:

Amazon's new DRM-Free MP3 Store was all over the news this week, so I thought I'd check it out. I fired up Firefox and went to amazon.com. I found the service under Search: MP3 Downloads.

The hardest part of the process was deciding which song I should buy. I decided to check the depth of the service and looked for songs from the seminal Canadian metal band Voivod. They had plenty. I went with their cover of Syd Barrett's classic "Astronomy Domine." It was 99 cents. (Some of the songs are only 89 cents.)

Amazon asked if I wanted to download and install their "Amazon MP3 Downloader." That sort of confused me, why should I have to download software merely to get an MP3? That's what's always bugged me about iTunes. I'm not some idiot who can't figure out how a browser works or how to organize files on a computer. I don't want software to hold my hand and make choices for me, I just want my music!
