One-Step Method For Adding Third-party Apps To iPhone 1.1.1, iPod Touch Debuts

iPhone Atlas reports:

A new process for jailbreaking and allowing the installation of non-sanctioned third-party applications to the iPhone has debuted. It's called AppSnapp, and is unique in two respects: it automates the process on iPhones running software/firmware 1.1.1 (previous methods were multi-step), and it can be completed purely using the iPhone; no interaction with a Mac or Windows computer (as with previous methods) is required. The process will jailbreak the iPhone or iPod Touch then push Installer.app to the device, which contains a catalog of native applications that can be installed directly over a WiFi or EDGE connection (see our Applications page for more instruction on Installer.app).

In order to perform the procedure, you simply need to navigate to http://www.jailbreakme.com on an iPhone or iPod Touch, then click the "Install AppSnap" button at the bottom of the page....

Apple Plays With Fire, Courts iPhone Gift Card Lawsuits

News.com's Chris Soghoian reports:

Apple set the blogosphere on fire Monday when word leaked of the company's latest effort to limit iPhone unlocking. Recent media reports reveal that that the company has instituted a two-device-per-visit limit for iPhone purchases and has banned the use of cash for such transactions. However, the latest news indicates that Apple is now also banning the use of Apple Gift Cards for iPhone sales. Wired News confirmed the rumor on Monday afternoon. A representative from the Burlingame, Calif., Apple store told Wired News that "official" policy is now that gift cards will not be accepted for the sale of iPhones.

Before we get into the nitty gritty of this incident, lets step back and explore exactly how Apple describes the gift cards on its Web site:

Apple Gift Cards

"An Apple Gift Card lets you take the guesswork out of gift-giving. Your friends and family can choose exactly what they want from any retail Apple Store, from the online Apple Store, or by calling 1-800-MY-APPLE in the United States."

Also...

"You can purchase just about anything sold by Apple (except another Apple Gift Card, an iTunes Gift Certificate or purchases at the iTunes Music Store), including products from both Apple and third-party makers."

There does not appear to be any small print on the gift card program Web site stating that Apple reserves the right to reject gift cards for any purchase or change the terms and conditions after the fact.

T-Mobile and Apple Announce Rate Plans for iPhone in Germany

[Press Release]

T-Mobile and Apple have announced three simple, affordable rate plans for iPhone in Germany, starting at just €49 per month. All three "iPhone Complete" plans include unlimited data, Visual Voicemail and access to T-Mobile's more than 8,000 Wi-Fi HotSpots in Germany. iPhone customers can easily choose the plan that's right for them based on the amount of voice minutes and SMS text messages they plan to use each month.

"This means that users can enjoy the fantastic experience of the mobile Internet on the iPhone with no worries," said Philipp Humm, managing director, T-Mobile Germany. The incredible combination of T-Mobile's powerful EDGE network combined with the country's largest offering of Wi-Fi HotSpots and the exclusive 'iPhone Complete' rate plans give T-Mobile customers everything they need to experience the iPhone to the fullest. The transparently structured Complete rates thus confirm our brand motto 'simply closer.'"

"We're thrilled to be partnering with T-Mobile and can't wait to start selling the iPhone in Germany in just a few short weeks," said Philip Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. "Starting at just €49 per month, we think these three rate plans give customers the flexibility to experience all of iPhone's revolutionary features at affordable and competitive prices."

All iPhone plans include Visual Voicemail, an industry first, which allows consumers to see a listing of their voicemails, decide which messages to listen to, then go directly to those messages without listening to previous messages. Just like email, Visual Voicemail on iPhone enables users to immediately and randomly access the messages that interest them most.

iPhone combines three devices into one—a mobile phone, a widescreen iPod®, and a breakthrough Internet device—all based on Apple's revolutionary multi-touch interface and pioneering software that allows users to control iPhone with just a tap, flick or pinch of their fingers.

By the end of 2007, T-Mobile will be the only network operator in Germany to offer EDGE throughout almost its entire GSM network. EDGE accelerates the mobile data transfer rate to over 220 Kilobits per second, which makes it almost four times as fast as ISDN in fixed-line networks. With EDGE, the German market leader offers its customers broadband anywhere and at any time. With 20,000 HotSpots worldwide, T-Mobile is the biggest Wi-Fi provider in the world. Of those HotSpots, over 8,000 are in Germany, where HotSpot users can achieve download speeds of up to 11 megabits per second.

iPhone is scheduled to go on sale on November 9 and will be sold in Germany through Telekom Shops of Deutsche Telekom and the T-Mobile web shop. iPhone requires a new 2-year T-Mobile rate plan and will be available in an 8GB model for €399 including V.A.T. and will work with either a PC or Mac.

iPhone activation will require an Internet connection; an iTunes Store account or a major credit card; the latest version of iTunes available at http://www.itunes.de and a PC or Mac with a USB 2.0 port and one of the following operating systems: Mac OS X v10.4.10 or later; Windows XP Home or Professional with Service Pack 2 or later; or Windows Vista Home Premium, Business, Enterprise or Ultimate Edition.

T-Mobile International is one of the world's leading companies in mobile communications. As one of Deutsche Telekom's three strategic business units, T-Mobile concentrates on the most dynamic markets in Europe and the United States. Almost 112 million mobile customers were served by companies of the Deutsche Telekom group by June 30, 2007. The common technology platform is based on GSM, the world's most successful digital wireless standard. This also makes T-Mobile the only mobile communications provider with a seamless transatlantic service.

'Iconic' iPhone Will Cause Crime Wave

PC Advisor's Matt Egan reports:

An industry expert today speculated that the Apple iPhone will cause a jump in mobile phone thefts when it launches next week.

According to Jack Wraith, chair of mobile phone trade body the MICAF (Mobile Industry Crime Action Forum) the iPhone is 'iconic'.

"[It] will be one of those 'nice-to-have items'," said Wraith. "The industry, along with the police and the government, are concerned they will cause a peak in robberies."

Only 1 Per Cent Of Brits Want An iPhone

digital-lifestyles.info's Mike Slocombe reports:

Only 1 Per Cent Of Brits Want An iPhoneApple's well-oiled publicity machine may well have ensured that half the planet knows all about their innovative iPhone, but when it comes to dipping in their pockets and buying the thing, it seems us Brits are distinctly sniffy, with a recent YouGov survey discovering that just one per cent of Britons polled would be buying an iPhone.
