German iPhone Sales Slump To 700 A Day
myitablet.com's Chris Davies reports:
In a bizarre coincidence, the German iPhone sold by T-Mobile has today been named one of "the most sought after items" for the holiday period, as well as a potential dud. Market research firm comScore uses online search frequencies to guesstimate consumer demand, with the iPhone coming in third in the German sector; however, sales of the handset have been revealed by Financial Times Deutschland at a shocking 700 per day in the country, compared to T-Mobile's healthy estimates of 10,000 per day.
German sales altogether have been comparatively weak...
InformationWeek's Eric Zeman places much of the blame on the absence of an EDGE data network in German territory, however. Although the country is well served with super-high speed UMTS/WCDMA 3G, iPhone users are forced to rely on GPRS in the absence of the 2.5G connection Apple saddled the handset with.

Has The iPhone Jumped The Shark?
InformationWeek's Stephen Wellman says:
While Apple's iPhone this year captured the imagination of the U.S. market and spurred a global diagoue about the future of smartphones, it's not taking Europe by fire in the sales department. In fact, if my colleague Eric Zeman is right, the iPhone could be a flop in Germany. What gives?
At this point there are several good explanations for the iPhone's lack of luster on the other side of the pond.....
But, I wonder if the real reason the iPhone is flopping in Europe is that the iPhone has simply jumped the shark.

iPhone for China and Alaska
Macworld UK's Jonny Evans reports:
Apple has... raised the bar on iPhone sales. Customers in Europe and the US can now pick up five iPhones in a single purchase, not two as has been made available so far.
Some reports claim 18 per cent of iPhones sold in the US have not been registered with AT&T.....
Meanwhile plans to introduce iPhone into new territories continue, with weekend reports claiming Apple has reached a deal with Chinese mobile phone retailer, D.Phone...
And in Alaska, a recent AT&T purchase of incumbent mobile network op, Dobson Communications, means users there will be able to pick up an iPhone from 9 December.

Young, Poor Prefer Cell Phones To Landlines In U.S.
The Associated Press reports:
More than one in eight households have cell phones but lack traditional landline telephones, according to a federal study released Monday that tracks the country's growing dependence on wireless phones....
The report released Monday showed that for the first half of 2007, 14 percent of households had cell phone service but no landline telephones. That was less than 1 percentage point over the second half of 2006 - not a statistically significant difference....
The federal data showed once again that young, poor, male and Hispanic people are likelier to have only wireless telephone service....
About one in five poor people have only cell phones, about double the percentage for those who are not poor.
[Editor's note: I'm among the group that has only a landline, although I would expect that here in Canada, where cellphone service rates are punishingly high, the proportional size of that cohort is a lot higher than the 24 percent in the U.S. I resist any service commodity that keeps the meter running, although I do have a long distance plan that's so cheap that it's hardly an issue.]

comScore reports the frequency of online searches for popular gadgets
comScore, Inc. (Nasdaq: SCOR), a leader in measuring the digital world, today released the results of a study of the frequency of online search inquiries for the most popular gadgets in the U.K., France and Germany this Christmas. The products studied were twenty different models of gadgets from the game console, mobile phone, and portable music player segments. The study covers the early stages of the Christmas shopping season during the first three weeks of November.
Cross-Country Popularity
Across the U.K., France and Germany the most popular gadget was the Nintendo Wii, with an average of 4.9 million weekly searches. The second most searched for gadget was the Apple iPod with 3.5 million searches. Rounding out the top five were the Nintendo DS Lite, the Sony Playstation PSP, and the Apple iPhone.
Bob Ivins, comScore EVP of European Markets said, "We know that music players, game consoles, and mobile phones are very popular with consumers this year. The interesting aspect of this study is identifying which products are generating the most consumer searches, which can provide retailers and manufacturers with important insight into the underlying consumer demand for each specific product."
