iPhone Fear Causes Canadian Carriers To Slash Rates
Network World Canada's Howard Solomon reports:
The influence of the iPhone is already being felt in Canada – even though the device can't be bought in the country yet - forcing Telus and Bell to slash wireless data prices.
That's the opinion of the SeaBoard Group, which said in a report that the certainty Rogers Communications would soon be selling the handset in Canada had forced its main competitors to strike early and make what the telecommunications consultancy calls "breathtaking" data price cuts.
"The deals now are fabulous," said Iain Grant, SeaBoard's Montreal-based managing director and until now an outspoken critic of Canadian carrier pricing.

Note From China: No Apple iPhones Here For Years
AlleyInsider's Henry Blodget reports:
Yesterday, we argued that the arrival of Apple's iPhone in the massive China mobile market was inevitable. We quickly heard from a source in Beijing who bet us a steak dinner that "inevitable" would not be a synonym for "sometime in 2008 or 2009."
Why?
In his words:
"Telco is still tough/sensitive. They get ideas--and then get reigned in by central."

Orange Network Ready for the iPhone in France
HardMac's Lionel reports:
Members from the Frenchiphone forum, already owning an Orange subscription plan as well as an SIM unlocked iPhone upgraded to firmware 1.1.2, have tested the availability of both Wi-Fi and EDGE network service to be deployed for the iPhone. Surprisingly, both seem to be ready, up and running!

iPhone Goodness (and Gotchas) from Google
theappleblog.com's Bob Rudis reports:
Apple did something very evil this summer: they timed the launch of the iPhone to almost perfectly coincide with the start of our familial migration to Seattle from Pennsylvania (for a new job opportunity). Knowing that we would need to be interacting remotely quite frequently for some time, my wife and I made the decision to free ourselves from the backwater phone tech that Verizon had to offer, bite the (extremely painful) early termination bullet and purchase two iPhones. (As an aside, while I do not miss Verizon's choice of phones, I do miss their stellar network service). It has been the first phone my wife has actually enjoyed using and I was looking forward to the opportunity (during the pre-launch hype, at least) of writing applications for it and converging mobile broadband computing, telephony and entertainment – a path was loathe to take pre-Apple. I had no idea it would be the key to at least my survival in our new hometown.

Apple Vs. Google In Open Source Mobility
ZNet's Dana Blankenhorn reports:
So the battle is joined (sort of).
In this corner we have Google, the challenger, with its open source hardware specification for a mobile platform.
And in this corner we have Apple, the champion, with real hardware, and a software development kit, but an iffy record in supporting open source.
Who will win? Will either?
At this point my money is on Apple. Real hardware beats imaginary hardware every time in my book. (I can't use that thing to the left.)

The iPhone's Broken Connections
Fortune's Brent Schlender says:
For Steve Jobs and his touchy-feely telephone, it's been a bumpy ride, says
Nearly five months have passed since Steve Jobs unleashed his flashy iPhone upon the world, and the sleek, do-everything gadget has met his ambitious initial sales targets and then some -- so far, more than 1.5 million have been sold.
And despite all the prelaunch hype and fear mongering, you don't hear many gripes that the novel, finger-driven user interface doesn't work, or that videos look crummy, or that the battery doesn't last long enough.
If anything, most of the iPhone's features have exceeded technological expectations, because in reality, it's a miniature Macintosh that happens to be a cellphone.
Still, the iPhone frenzy seemed to evaporate more quickly than it built up, and these early days have turned out to be what euphemistically might be called a "learning experience" for everyone involved -- the customers, its wireless service provider, and especially Apple ....
