AT&T CEO: Expect A 3G iPhone In 2008

InformationWeek's W. David Gardner reports:

A new version of Apple's iPhone will be introduced in 2008 that is capable of operating on faster 3G cellular networks.

"You'll have it next year," AT&T (NYSE: T) chief executive Randall Stephenson told a group of stockholders and financial analysts at a Wednesday meeting in Santa Clara, Calif.

Currently relegated to AT&T's relatively slow EDGE network, Stephenson said his company will be introducing a version of the phone next year that that will enable users to download from the Internet at a faster rate.....

The news somewhat trumps any announcement scheduled by Jobs at the January Macworld conference in San Francisco.

Apple to Unveil Faster IPhone, AT&T's Stephenson Says

Bloomberg's Crayton Harrison reports:

Apple Inc. will introduce a version of the iPhone next year that can download from the Internet at a faster rate, AT&T Inc. Chief Executive Officer Randall Stephenson said.

The device will operate on third-generation wireless networks, Stephenson said today at a meeting of the Churchill Club in Santa Clara, California. San Antonio-based AT&T is the exclusive carrier for the iPhone in the U.S.

3G iPhone: Sooner Rather Than Later?

Apple 2.0's Philip Elmer-DeWitt says:

"You'll have it next year."

That was AT&T chairman Randall Stephenson's answer to a question yesterday about when Apple will introduce an iPhone that runs on a faster, third generation wireless network rather than AT&T's 2.5G EDGE network, according to an overnight report.

The remark was made at a meeting of the Churchill Club in Santa Clara, Calif., and seemed to offer slightly more hope of a speedy delivery than Steve Jobs' latest public comment on the matter.

"Hopefully we'll see that late next year," was what Jobs said when asked last September why he hadn't built a 3G iPhone.

Apple Threatens Resellers: Don't Talk About iPhone

APCMag's Dan Warne reports:

Apple has threatened its "Premium Resellers" with losing their accreditation if they speak to customers about the iPhone, which is not yet officially available in Australia.

"Under NO CIRCUMSTANCE is anyone to offer any form of support to customers for the iPhone, either inside or outside of business hours," one reseller told its staff in an email.

"Doing so is in breach of our Apple Premium Reseller agreement.

The reseller said staff could be subjected to disciplinary action "including termination" if they helped a customer with an iPhone, even in their private time.
