TIME Picks The iPhone As Invention Of the Year

TIME's Lev Grossman reports:

Stop. I mean, don't stop reading this, but stop thinking what you're about to think. Or, O.K., I'll think it for you:

"I Take the iPhone Home"....

This is partly a story about a company called Apple Computer. It's also partly a story about a fancy... What Could Sink the iPhone....

The thing is hard to type on. It's too slow. It's too big. It doesn't have instant messaging. It's too expensive. (Or, no, wait, it's too cheap!) It doesn't support my work e-mail. It's locked to AT&T. Steve Jobs secretly hates puppies. And - all together now - we're sick of hearing about it! Yes, there's been a lot of hype written about the iPhone, and a lot of guff too. So much so that it seems weird to add more, after Danny Fanboy and Bobby McBlogger have had their day. But when that day is over, Apple's iPhone is still the best thing invented this year. Why? Five reasons....

iPhone Rubber Fingers Not A Hoax, Inventor Insists

The Register's James Sherwood reports:

Exclusive Register Hardware can confirm that it's possible to prevent smudging your iPhone's display by rolling what looks like a black latex condom onto your finger - aka the weirdest iPhone accessory ever seen: the Phone Finger.

The product's maker claims the Phone Finger will "prevent smudges and fingerprints" on your iPhone or iPod Touch. However, we were unsure if the latex surface would interfere with the iPhone's touch screen technology.

A promotional video where a girl has her iPhone stolen whilst using her Phone Finger also made us question the product's legitimacy...

The iPhone Legacy: Pricier Smartphones?

BusinessWeek's Arik Hesseldahl says:

For a device that's been on the market all of four months, the iPhone certainly has had more than its share of impact.

Armed with slick software that gives it a dazzling interface and a touch-sensitive screen that's the envy of the wireless industry, Apple's first wireless device has set the bar higher for smartphones. Now rivals are rushing to meet the challenge. Phones that look like distant iPhone cousins—HTC's Touch, Nokia's N95, and the Venus and Voyager phones from LG—are hitting the market now or will soon.

And that can't help but nudge production costs upward, as manufacturers incorporate beefier software and more powerful and pricier chips. The race is on to add features while staying within price ranges consumers will accept. In turn, that trend is bound to depress sales growth, argues Richard Windsor, an analyst with Nomura Securities (NMR) in London.

Apple, Hackenomics, And The Waning Anonymity (And Obsoletion) Of Cash

ZNet Executive Editor David Berlind says:

The noose is slowly tightening. A hundred years ago - heck, even ten years ago - for the most part, we didn't have to sacrifice our privacy just to participate in some transaction. Lots of merchants tried (some still do) to shake us down for our personal information before allowing a purchase. Radio Shack used to be notorious for this practice until it realized how many customers it scared away (including me.. that was one reason I hated going in there).....

I don't remember the exact context, but I think it was in the early 80's when I heard Johnny Carson crack a joke about how the day might come when cash wouldn't be accepted. Back then, he was kidding. Today, no one is kidding about it. For example, according to a recent InfoWorld report, Apple is apparently refusing to accept cash as a form of payment for its iPhones. Wrote IW's Elizabeth Montalbano and Steven Schwankert:

People looking to walk into an Apple retailer and buy an iPhone with cash will be out of luck. The company is now accepting only credit or debit card payments for the devices so that it can track who purchases the phone, according to an employee at the Apple Store in New York's SoHo neighborhood.
