China Mobile in talks with Apple to sell iPhone
IDG News Service's Dan Nystedt reports:
China Mobile is in talks with Apple to sell the iPhone in China, the company's CEO said on Tuesday. But he's not keen on the type of revenue-sharing model that Apple has insisted on elsewhere in the world.
"Our customers like this kind of fashionable product," Wang Jianzhou, China Mobile's CEO, on the sidelines of the GSM Association's Mobile Asia Congress in Macau.
But in a speech at the conference, Wang said he doesn't like some of the new business models emerging in the mobile phone industry, including handset makers wanting to share revenue with mobile operators.

Is The World Ready For A 1TB iPod?
The Register's Ashlee Vance says:
We're barreling toward a world where 1TB files fly make their way across the internet, while devices like the iPod prepare to handle your favorite 267,000 songs and movies. And, according to industry experts, the storage vendors are not quite ready to deal with all of these massive files or to construct the types of systems that could power a local/network/mobile version of, say, Google Docs well.

Brits snapped up Apple iPhones
Apple 2.0's Philip Elmer-DeWitt says:
Britons snapped up Apple iPhones at a healthy clip over the weekend, according to sales estimates that appeared in the British press this morning.
The Guardian and The Times quote Peter Erskine, CEO of O2 UK, estimating that tens of thousands of the devices were sold at Apple, O2 and Carphone Warehouse stores over the weekend. The Mirror, citing an unnamed O2 spokesperson, put the number at 70,000, according to Macworld U.K.
Erskine went on to call the iPhone the fastest-selling device his network has ever seen. He said 2/3 of the iPhone customers were new to O2, which suggests that they were lured away from Vodafone (VOD), Orange or T-Mobile.
The sales figures went a long way to countering early suggestions including one here that the iPhone might be getting a tepid reception in the U.K. A thinly reported story in The Register went so far as to call first night of sales a flop, and Apple stock fell on Monday in part reacting to such perceptions.

O2 chief dampens iPhone hype
The Register's Andrew Orlowski reports:
Peter Erskine, CEO of UK operator O2 said it's "early days" for the iPhone in the UK - and shot down some of the larger sales numbers being touted for the device.
iPhone sales were below tabloid guesstimates of 100,000 (The Sun & The Guardian) and 70,000 (The Mirror) - Erskine said the number was in the "tens of thousands".
Nevertheless, he said he was happy that people were coming into the stores, if only to play with the gizmo.
