An Overview of iLife '08

Graham K. Rogers reports:

In August I picked up a copy of the latest iLife 08 a week or so after its release in the United States. It went on the MacBookPro I use with no complaint. It was already installed on the iMac that I looked at a few days later. I also have access to a couple of older G4 machines. Installation on these (a venerable PowerPC and a 1.25GHz eMac) was interrupted because of the specifications for these computers: processors must be 2.0GHz for the Intel machines and 1.9GHz for G5 computers). Apart from iMovie the other components were installed....

The whole suite, then, is iPhoto, which has since been updated to version 7.0.1 and is much improved over version 6; iMovie, also now at 7.0.1; iDVD (7.0) which will work on the older G4s even without a DVD burner as the project can be moved to another disk; iWeb (version 2: for making web sites easily); and an upgraded GarageBand (version 4)....

...this is the sort of suite that demonstrates why Mac users are Mac users. The components of iLife are included as bundled software on all new Macs along with the requisite browser, mail program, word processor and utilities: we are able to hit the ground running.....

Pages 3.0: Colour for invisible markers can now be customized

Betalogue's Pierre Igot reports:

I spend a lot of time complaining about what’s wrong in Pages and other Apple software, so I figure I should also spend a little bit of time reviewing what is right - especially when it is an improvement that solves a problem that I had been complaining about earlier on.

Pages has always had the standard “Show Invisibles” command that reveals the invisible characters in your document, using various symbols (a dot for the regular space, a paragraph symbol for the paragraph mark, etc.)....

Well, I am pleased to report that, in Pages 3.0, while there is still no option to show all invisibles except for the regular space, the colour used for all the symbols for invisible characters can now be customized, via the application’s preferences, with a standard Mac OS X colour picker.

Pages 3.0: Now supports table borders thinner than 1 pt

Betalogue's Pierre Igot reports:

By default, when you insert a new table in a Pages document, its borders are 1 pt thick. That is pretty thick, especially in print.

The previous versions of Pages had a pretty weird behaviour where, if you selected a table and then went to the drawing inspector and chose a stroke thickness of less than 1 pt (like 0.5 pt or 0.25 pt, which were available as options), instead of changing the table borders to a thinner stroke, Pages would actually change the black 1 pt-thick borders toâ€| 1 pt-thick borders in a gradually lighter shade of grey.....

Well, I am pleased to report that Pages 3.0 finally does the right thing and lets you use black table borders that are thinner than 1 pt. There is a “Thin” option in the table inspector, in the pop-up menu for the stroke style, or you can adjust the border thickness number manually.
