The program allows you to create a wide range of mathematical equations that can be used with word processors, graphic software, presentation software, or DTP layout software easily, thanks to MathMagic's support for multiple formats and ways to interact with other software, including Drag&Drop and Copy&Paste, its ability to read MathMagic can read equations created in other applications such as MathType, MS Word Equation Editor, Google Docs, and various equations in LaTeX, Plain TeX, MathML, Wiki Equation, and ASCII, and allows you to extract equations contained in MS Word documents or convert them into other formats such as EPS. MathMagic can also export in PICT, PNG, JPEG, GIF, EPS, PDF, TeX, MathML, as well as lesser-known ones like ASCIIMath and Wiki Equation.

The application's developer, InfoLogic, Inc. has recently released MathMagic Personal Edition 8.0, a major update that now supports Apple's new iBooks Author, as well as other iApps, including Pages, Numbers, and Keynote. The Version 8 upgrade also includes new Math body text fonts and improved symbol fonts, drag & drop support for PDF equations, improved Math Styles and fine control.

"There is no other equation editor available that offers the power, ease of use, flexibility, and equation quality of MathMagic Personal Edition 8.0," says InfoLogic's Charlie Lee. "MathMagic products work seamlessly with iBooks Author, iWork, Adobe InDesign, and QuarkXPress."

MathMagic is distributed via .dmg format, and is designed to work with simple Drag-and-Drop installation. The MathMagic application will automatically install its fonts and some equation clips when first launched, and if previously installed files are not found. However, the developer says automatic installation or activation of fonts may not work in some cases, especially when other applications are running. In that case, or if you just prefer to selectively install fonts, manual installation of the MathMagic Fonts folder is recommended, with instructions for doing so included with the bundled documentation. I encountered no problems, and the installation went smoothly.

Once the font install issue is attended to (if necessary) you're good to go and ready to create a new layout and start writing equations. If you're familiar with using equation editors, you can probably dive right in. If not, InfoLogic, Inc. has provided a comprehensive and detailed user guide in PDF format to help walk you through any aspects with which you need help.

MathMagic allows you to define and use customized palettes comprised of frequently used items. can also store frequently used equations on the Clips window. When listed on the Clips window, you assign shortcut keys with a macro to access your custom equations quickly.Further customization is possible in that you can create a unique style for your equations by specifying the spacing between each element of the equation, the width and the thickness of lines, bracket overhangs, box positions, and more.

You can also specify the font and font sizes of equations, variables, numbers, functions, and Greek characters. MathMagic supports approximately 800 widely-used symbol characters in mathematics and science, from elementary school to the university level. Most symbols are grouped on a palette according to their association.
