Mac OS X 10.5.2: Time Machine problems? - OS X Odyssey 911

7679 MacFixIt is reporting Time Machine problems a'plenty, noting that "Time Machine continues to be the bane of Mac OS X 10.5.2 upgraders, causing a variety of issues that can hamper the function's own operation or interfere with other system processes. The most common problems are:
• the error message "Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while copying files to the backup volume."
• a situation where Time Machine is persistently "preparing" the backup but never actually starts backing up
• dismal backup speed

Not for everyone, however. I updated my 1.33 GHz G4 PowerBook to OS 10.5.2 along with the Leopard Graphics Update last Wednesday, and I'm happy to report Time Machine is still working great, completing backups without incident, and at what seems to be the usual speed.

How about you?

As for other issues, OS 10.5.2 plus the Leopard Graphics Update seem to have cured the problem I had been having with Spaces crapping out in OS 10.5.1, or at least it hasn't happened since I installed the updaters and rebooted last Thursday.

On the downside, the PowerBook is running hotter since these updates were installed, with the fans cutting in frequently even when operating at Reduced processor speed.

And POP3/SMTP email throughput is still horrible - glacially slow with Gmail, which at least works - and ISP's SMTP server won't work at all. I just get an error message (works fine in Tiger over the same connection).

I too have Time Machine working perfectly. I am using an external Seagate 500GB USB drive. It is partitioned into 2 partitions. I maintain a SuperDuper clone of my system on one partition (updated daily) and Time Machine uses the other partition. I connect the USB drive to a Belkin USB hub which is then connected to my Intel iMac.

Note that I am a regular maintenance nerd. I often fix permissions. When I delete caches (such as with Cocktail or other utility) I usually first shut down first and boot into Safe mode & delete caches while in Safe mode. I particularly delete caches after system updates. I also run DiskWarrior around once every month or two.

hey, i have a problem with my disk partitions.
the thing is, i created a bootcamp partition, but before i installed vista, i decided to try out the time machine on this partition. now i need to install windows vista but i cant because the bootcamp assistan demands the disk to be just one partition. how can i remove the timemachine partition. erasing it just erases the folders in it, not the partition itself. ive heard about reformattin but i dont want to lose all the programes ive installed so far. thanks! smile

i’ve got the same problem, and i found the solution here to fix blue screen of death, just for reference.
