Apple Dumps Old G4 Mac minis at Costco

siliconvalleysleuth.com reports:

Apple is getting rid of its old G4 powered Mac Mini computers at Costco, the store where America buys its cat food and pallets of toilet paper at steep discounts.

The $699 price tag gets consumers a 512Mb Mac Mini with a 80Gb hard drive, as well as a wireless keyboard and mouse, which originally weren't included with the Mac Mini. It also comes with a three year warranty, where the Apple stores only offers 90 days.

Benchmarking XP on a Mac mini

Macworld's James Galbraith reports:

When I wrote a recent article comparing WorldBench 5 scores of Intel-based Macs to some similarly configured PCs, I couldn’t list results for the Mac mini Core Duo. PC World's WorldBench 5 requires three complete runs before returning final scores and the mini had some trouble finishing the tests involving Windows Media Encoder 9. It took a few additional trials, but the results are now in and posted below.

Looking at the specifications for Apple’s slim desktop, it’s no surprise that the Mac mini struggled to keep up with the other dual-core systems we matched it against. The mini runs on a 1.66GHz Core Duo processors; all the other machines in our tests featured 2GHz and higher processors. The mini did manage to squeak by the HP Pavilion and its 2GHz Athlon 64X2 dual-core processor on two of the five individual tests listed in the chart—the Photoshop and the Multitasking tests. For more information on WorldBench, including results from other PCs, visit PCWorld.com.

Aperture on a Mac mini Intel

HardMac's Lionel reports:

One of our readers, Pixel, has successfully installed and used Aperture 1.1 on his Mac mini Intel, officially not supported. Hereafter is the procedure.....

Of course, one should not expect miracles, but it might allow Mac mini Intel users to enjoy Aperture for some digital photo editing.

Mac-ification Of The Digital Domicile At Last

Mini Ture_MacJournal's Darryl says:

Care, safety, security and comfort are the hot drivers of the new and emerging technology as well as requirements from the social aspect of the home user. The social aspect is typified in classifications of the key societal identities of aged, singles, families and challenged home dwellers. iHome heart and Hearth (soul) has not changed it is still a philosophically socially relevant aspect of hearth and life style but the centration of the home atypically has shifted with new 'you can have it all' Mac digital technology in the Living room with music, photo's and multi media generally piped right throughout the home.

Review: Mac Mini Hacks & Mods for Dummies

SpyMac's David Guenther reports:

The Dummies series has long been the foremost reference for the uninitiated ranging in topics from European travel to quitting smoking.

Author John Rizzo offers an extensive guide to tricking out the mini and making it even more versatile than Apple intended when it was released only a month and half ago......

Mac mini Hacks and Mods for Dummies is the latest in this series to hit the shelves.
Author John Rizzo offers an extensive guide to tricking out the mini and making it even more versatile than Apple intended when it was released only a month and half ago.
Rizzo gives basic mod ideas such as making the mini portable, but the bulk of the book offers more advanced mods and hacks like turning your mini into a kitchen appliance controller or creating a mini home theatre.
