OnScreen DNA Lite uses a 3D virtual model in a tutorial framework to teach the structural details of DNA, including its double helix geometry and chemical components and bonds. Animated simulations of biotech lab phenomena in which the two strands of DNA are seen to separate and then reattach are also included.
OnScreen DNA Lite, which uses the same virtual model and on-screen tools as the more advanced commercial editions of the software, runs under Macintosh OS 10.3.9 and above and Windows XP/Vista. OnScreen DNA's simulations show details that are impossible to see with the two-dimensional "ladder" animations commonly encountered on the internet. While aimed primarily at biology teachers, the software has been utilized by others as a self-teaching aid.
OnScreen DNA and OnScreen DNA Pro, continue to be sold for $69 and $99, respectively. OnScreen DNA adds 3D simulations of the critical DNA processes of replication and gene transcription. The Pro edition empowers and challenges users to take control of these simulations to construct DNA and RNA molecules through the proper choice of enzymes and molecular building blocks. More details of all editions can be found online at onscreen-dna.com, where the commercial editions may also be purchased.
OnScreen Science, Inc. publishes Ph.D.-scientist-designed software for science education tasks particularly benefiting from computer simulations. In addition to OnScreen DNA, the company also offers OnScreen Particle Physics, a highly regarded simulation of a particle detection chamber for both the Windows and Macintosh platforms.
