However, in the meantime, as a completely separate side project Logos had some developers design a Dashboard widget to help you quickly look up the text of any Bible reference you come across. Simply type or cut and paste any Bible book, chapter, and verse reference into the Logos Bible Widget and instantly see the full text of that verse.

Easier than grabbing your Bible off the shelf, faster than going to Bible Gateway, and it's free,
Indeed, they didn't just put the widget out there and forget it. Version 2.3 of Logos Bible Widget was just released last weekend.
The biggest change is that the new version adds the ESV Bible so you can instantly navigate to a verse and toggle it betwees the English Standard Version or King James Version Bible.
The English Standard Version (ESV) Bible is a new, essentially literal Bible translation that claims to combine word-for-word precision and accuracy with literary excellence, beauty, and depth of meaning. I'm not familiar with it yet, but Logos Bible Widget is a convenient means of taking a look.
According to the ESV Website:
"The ESV is an “essentially literal” translation that seeks as far as possible to capture the precise wording of the original text and the personal style of each Bible writer. As such, its emphasis is on “word-for-word” correspondence, at the same time taking into account differences of grammar, syntax, and idiom between current literary English and the original languages. Thus it seeks to be transparent to the original text, letting the reader see as directly as possible the structure and meaning of the original.
In contrast to the ESV, some Bible versions have followed a “thought-for-thought” rather than “word-for-word” translation philosophy, emphasizing “dynamic equivalence” rather than the “essentially literal” meaning of the original. A “thought-for-thought” translation is of necessity more inclined to reflect the interpretive opinions of the translator and the influences of contemporary culture."

At 2.9 MB for the widget's compressed file is a reasonably quick download, even on dialup. Once installed, which takes a few seconds, the Logos Bible Widget appears on your dashboard. Which brings us to the other substantial change with version 2.
As I noted in my review of Logos Bible Widget version 1, it was a tad large as widgets go, and used up a fair bit of space even on my sparsely populated 17" PowerBook's Dashboard, so if you had a lot of widgets activated, you would likely have to move some stuff around to accommodate it.

Logos listened to the criticism, presumably not just from me, and version 2 is much more trim and compact, without losing any functionality.

Logos Bible Widget is simplicity itself to use. Just type in a chapter and verse reference and the text (in the selected translation version) will appear virtually instantly.
There are also navigation buttons to jump to the next or previous verses or chapters.
You can copy/paste text from the verse window into another application.
To switch Bible versions, just flip the widget over.

That's pretty much it. This is a great little reference tool. It would be nice if it was searchable, but then we would be getting into the category of full-fledged Bible software.
