Finally got that iPhone you've been wanting? Good for you. It's a great device that has revolutionized the cell phone industry (see Applelinks review), but it's not perfect. There are still some things missing both in software and hardware. The software issues will continue to be addressed by Apple and (soon) third party developers, while the hardware issues are being addressed now by companies such as JAVOedge.
I'll start by looking at their AlloyVision Crystal Metal Case for the 8GB iPhone. I'll soon have a round-up review of many iPhone cases, but decided to single out the AlloyVision as a logical companion to the JAVOedge portable battery charger bundle (see below).
The first thing you'll notice about the AlloyVision is the sharp metallic color of the aluminum back. The magenta and red models are the most striking, but even the silver and black models look pretty cool. They all have the appealing shine of a new car in the dealer showroom, and I'm somewhat surprised they don't offer more color choices. Green and blue would look especially nice in this treatment.
The front of the case, the sides, and the the bottom of the back are all clear PC plastic, so your iPhone shows through quite well. The iPhone is slipped in through the opening at the top, and the padded iterior of the solid color backing effectively holds the phone in place. A wide opening at the bottom offers more than enough room for connecting your docking cable, while rubber strips on the side provide a non-slip, comfortable grip.
Of course, considering the solid back, JAVOedge did cut a hole for the iPhone's camera. Showing their appreciation for Apple fans, JAVOedge also cut a hole to allow the Apple logo to appear through the case. Functionally pointless, yes, but we appreciate it nonetheless.
The AlloyVision offers solid protection for everything but the screen of the iPhone, so you'll want to purchase a separate screen protector. The slightly beveled lip that overlaps the front of the touch screen area is small enough that it doesn't interfere with typing, which is something a surprising number of iPhone case developers seem to be overlooking.
The only thing on which the JAVOedge missed the mark is portability. A belt clip can be attached by screwing a peg into the back and snapping the clip onto it. Although it's secure, it feels rather flimsy; the iPhone will tend to spin around on your belt, as the clip doesn't lock the phone into a particular position. Also, the clip more than doubles the width of the iPhone becuase it sticks so far out from the case.
If you can deal with these two drawbacks, the AlloyVision is a goodif somewhat priceyentry in the flooded iPhone case market. It's also a logical choice to go along with the unfortunately named High Capacity (3400mAH) Portable Battery Charger Complete Bundle for Apple iPhone 8GB.
Packed in the JAVOedge Travel Bag, the High Capacity (3400mAH) Portable Battery Charger Complete Bundle contains just about everything you would need to keep your iPhone powered up on long trips...and many other cell phones, as well. The centerpiece, of course, is the High Capacity (3400mAH) Portable Battery Charger. It's just a bit smaller than the iPhone itself, and contains enough juice to recharge your portable device three to eight times before needing to be recharged itself, depending upon the device (your iPhone will be closer to three). In other words, if you charge up the portable battery, you can then use it to recharge your iPhone numerous times, or charge different devices. No more worries about your iPhone's battery dying on the plane in the middle of your movie...unless it's the extended DVD version of King Kong, perhaps.
You can charge the battery itself by plugging it into a USB port on your computer, directly into a wall socket, or into a car chager. All of the necessary adapters and cables are provided in the Complete Bundle. Also included are adapters to allow connection to the following devices:
- Any smartphones that uses a mini USB port for charging
- Apple iPhone
- Apple iPod (any model except Shuffle and Shuffle 2nd Gen)
- Palm Treo (650, 700p, 700w, 700w, 680, 750v)
- Blackberry Pearl
- T-Mobile Dash
- Cingular Blackjack
- LG Phones
- Nokia Phones
- Sony PSP
Obviously, there are some devices missing here, but it's possible they'll eventually be covered in future adapter releases from JAVOedge. My family's covered by the iPhone, iPod and Nokia support, but I'm somewhat surprised JAVOedge would include an adapter for the Sony PSP, but not the far more popular Nintendo DS or Game Boy Advance. Does Sony even still make the PSP? If so, why?
The adapters for connecting your device to the charger are quite small, so to make sure your phone isn't just hanging off the battery, the bundle includes a retractable cable to make the connection. In fact, you have to use this. It's about 4 inches long at its most compact, 28 inches when stretched out. You won't want to stretch it too far, though, as it too easily pulls out from the battery charger.
The Complete Bundle ends up being a very compact but very useful package that contains enough power and functionality to keep your portable device running. I'd prefer that JAVOedge allow users to select only the adapters they need and therefore not have to pay for them all (in my case, the LG, Treo and PSP adapters, for example, will do nothing more that slowly waste away in a landfill somewhere...unless I can find a place that recycles such things).
That aside, if you're an iPhone or iPod addict who gets the shakes when you're not within a visual distance of an outlet, the JAVOedge High Capacity (3400mAH) Portable Battery Charger Complete Bundle will give you your fix.
