The newest version of Boinx iStopMotion (v1.3), released today, now supports localization and adds a couple of "secret" tricks. Shipped languages are English and German, with additional ones to be added over time. Boinx Software will be promoting a volunteer effort to add other languages. Secret tricks include a preference setting for turning the video upside down in order to support animation of really small objects.
"Localised versions are among the most wanted features for Boinx iStopMotion," said Oliver Breidenbach of Boinx Software. "A lot of effort has been spent on iStopMotion 1.3 to make it easily localisable." Along the way, a few bugs have been fixed and the application design has been fine tuned. The application will be shipped in English and German. Other languages will be added in future releases. Because very few users have made use of the online documentation, it has not yet been translated. "We are waiting for customer feedback on this," said Oliver Breidenbach.
Boinx Software has received offers from enthusiastic users from around the world to localise the application in the past, but had been forced to refuse to accept because of engineering issues. These have been solved, and Boinx Software is promoting a volunteer effort to provide the application in a number of languages. The fruits of these efforts will be made available on the website as an add-on download, and the volunteers will be rewarded by being mentioned and publicly recognised for their effort.
Two features were added with this release. Users now have the ability to turn the video input source upside down so that a camera can be closer to the level of action by being used upside down, a trick often employed by animators. In addition to that, the sound that is played when a frame is captured can be turned off for time lapse recordings. Both features are available as "hidden" prefs.
Boinx iStopMotion 1.3 is available for download immediately. Current owners of a valid DV key for version 1.0 or later can continue to use their keys with iStopMotion 1.3. New keys are available for US$ 39.95 through Kagi. Volume licensing for schools and other educational institutions is available upon request. An Applelinks review will be posted later this month.
