Demand Drag Gnaws on Apple
The Street.com's Troy Wolverton says:
"If recent developments are any indication, Apple could have sour news for investors when it reports earnings next week.
"Announcements from two companies in the digital music player sector -- and even from Apple itself -- suggest that demand has slowed in recent months. And some analysts worry that such a slowdown could signal a maturing market. Either way, muted demand could have a considerable effect on Apple, whose popular iPod music players have supercharged the company's revenue and earnings over the last two years."

The New York Times Kareem Fahim reports:
"As Errol Rose made preparations on Monday to bury his 15-year-old son, Christopher, who was killed last week in Brooklyn during a fight over an iPod, he received a telephone call from a stranger. The man spoke in tones that the grieving father said had momentarily quieted his anguish.
"The stranger, Rose soon learned, was Steve Jobs, chief executive of Apple Computer, the company that makes the iPod."

iPod To Dock With Laptop, Serving As Its Touchpad?
ipodhacks.com reports:
"It's hard to guess what Apple will think of next when it comes to extending both the iPod and its Macintosh line of computers. According to a recent report, it seems that tighter integration between the two may be on the horizon.
"A look at Apple's patent application no. 20040224638 reveals a sprawling description of many detailed aspects of a digital music player system that, frankly, makes for fairly dull afternoon reading. A close look, however, reveals the description of a most interesting docking arrangement; it seems that Apple may be planning to produce an iBook or PowerBook laptop computer that allows a future iPod or iPod mini to dock into its surface, with the iPod's touchpad (or future touchscreen?) serving as the laptop's trackpad."

Leader: Podcasting over-hyped
silicon.com says:
"It's been a good few weeks for podcasting fans, with updates to Apple's iTunes software supporting the phenomenon and predictions that podcasting is going to expand at an extraordinary rate over the next few years.
"There will be 60 million podcast users in the US alone by 2010, according to forecasts from research consultancy The Diffusion Group, which predicts that 75 per cent of digital music player owners will be downloading audio broadcasts by 2010.
".....it's hard to argue with the enthusiasm of bedroom DJs who can now parade their fine work to the broadest audience. And who would want to argue with the BBC, ABC or NBC, who are all now offering podcasts?
"But then again, radio shows have been available on the internet for years."

The iPod revolution marches on
ipodgarage.com's Stephan Fassmann says:
"Apple made some interesting updates this week to iTunes and the iPods.
"The full sized iPods all have color screens now. and the 1 GB shuffle dropped in price $20. The odd thing is the lack of a 40GB $349 model. I wonder if they just couldn't get a good enough deal on that one, but the 20GB U2 is at $329 so they might think that is in the slot."

The Geek: Podcast Your Eyes On The Future Of Sound
independent.co.uk's Charles Arthur says:
"You'll have heard by now of blogs. (If not, see me at the end of the column.) You can already get pictures in them, but what if blogs used the other media formats that web pages do, such as audio and video? Why shouldn't people who have a thought to impart record it digitally, so people can download and listen to it in their own time?
"People have been recording content, principally audio, for their blogs since 2001. The phenomenon gathered steam in 2003, once a simple way to contain the audio in the "RSS feed" of a website (which lets you monitor it without having to visit the site) was worked out.
"Thus was born "podcasting"- because it was sort of like broadcasting, and because if you had an iPod or another digital music player you could copy the file to that. Lots of people offer podcasts via their blogs. The problem is finding a way to keep up with them."

Smart Playlists stop updating dynamically on iPod
A new Apple Knowledge Base article says:
"If you have an iPod with a Click Wheel, Smart Playlists may stop updating dynamically after you update your iPod with iPod Updater 2005-06-26. For example, if you rate a song on your iPod, the rating appears, but that same song won't appear in a Smart Playlist based on the same rating on your iPod. But this can happen with a Smart Playlist based on any criteria.
"To resolve this issue, connect your iPod to the computer that contains the original Smart Playlists. This makes iTunes update the Smart Playlists in iTunes and on your iPod."

Bluetooth Headphone Systems For The iPod Reviewed
PlayList's Dan Frakes reports:
"Since the day the first iPod was introduced, people have asked for a way to listen to their music without dangling, tangling headphone cables. Although many have speculated that Apple would eventually create an iPod with Bluetooth or some other wireless technology, those predictions havent yet come true. In the meantime, a number of vendors have released Bluetooth-based wireless headphone systems for the iPod. I tested three such systems: MacAllys $170 BlueWave, Logitechs $150 Wireless Headphones for iPod, and Ten Technologys $200 naviPlay. These systems are fully compatible with 3rd-generation and later full-size iPods, as well as iPod mini modelsbasically, any iPod with a dock connector port. (As noted below, the MacAlly and Logitech systems will also work with older iPods and other audio sources, but not without limitations.)"

Capdase Car Charger for iPod and iPod shuffle
ipodgarage.com's Bill Palmer reports:
"There's nothing better than getting out of your car with your iPod's battery more fully charged than when you got in. And seeing how many different ways various iPod users us their iPod in the car, we like to see as many iPod car charger solutions come to market as possible. No matter which solution you use, the end result is invariably that your battery will be charged. The trick, of course, is figuring out which chargers work best in which situations. And while some iPod car chargers come with, say, a built-in line out port, the Capdase has some other tricks up its sleeve instead."
