Apple fixes iPod TV out issue; games problem remains

Back in September, we reported that TV out on the iPod classic had been seemingly disabled with all third-party docks and cables. Any product that didn't contain the Apple authentication chip could not be using for viewing iPod video on a TV. This week, Apple released software version 1.0.2 for the iPod classic, and I can report that it has resolved this issue. Games purchased for the 5G iPod, however, are still incompatibile with the iPod classic and 3rd gen iPod nano.

When I connected the iPod to my iMac last night, I was prompted to download the new software, which I did. There were no details as to what the update contained, other than "bug fixes," but an Applelinks reader alerted me that this was coming and said it should fix the issue. After installing the update, I hooked the iPod classic up to my DLO HomeDock Deluxe II, and sure enough, I was able to tell the iPod to either use TV out when playing video or to prompt me. My Seahawks highlights (the few there have been this year, anyway), played just fine.

I still haven't seen any sort of explanation from Apple as to why this problem existed, let alone a simple acknowledgement of the issue. But, it's fixed. Hopefully none of you ran out and bought a compatible third-party dock or cable to replace the one that wasn't working.

All that remains now is an explanation as to why the iPod classic and 3rd gen nano killed any games you may have downloaded for your 5G iPod. Four games—Texas Hold 'Em, Tetris, Ms. Pac Man and Sudoku can now be purchased as one unit for use on any video-capable iPod, but it seems that those who have previously purchased these games will still have to buy them again to get iPod nano and iPod classic compatibility.

In the reviews of the games, one iTunes user claimed that he contacted customer service about the issue and was given five free iTunes music downloads for his troubles, but not a $4.95 credit for the game. It's better than nothing, though, so give it a try.
