iPhone Saves Golfer From Internal Bleeding
myitablet.com's Chris Davies reports:
If you think golf is the ideal way to relax after a hard day at the office, think again. It turns out that life on the course might be even more dangerous than the potential for a market-crash related coronary, at least if you're lacking in the common sense to stand well out of the way of the fast-moving golf balls. Thankfully Apple's iPhone has an unadvertised feature: life preserver. It's a function that 53 year old Irwin Koss of DeWitt, New York can thank for not ending up in hospital suffering internal bleeding.

Salling Clicker on The iPhone
IBM Developerworks' Jack D Herrington reports:
The Apple iPhone is the hottest new device on the market. Discover how you can develop an application for it using your existing Web tools.
I was so proud of myself: I held out for an amazing four days before I gave in to the iPhone. Certainly, the fact that my original phone was a piece of junk was a lot of incentive. But what really sold me was the fact that the phone had Wi-Fi built-in andmore importantlyhas a great browser. You see, the software development kit (SDK) for the iPhone is standard Dynamic HTML (DHTML) through the Web browser. So, you can use all the familiar HTML, Cascading Style Sheet (CSS), and Asynchronous JavaScript™ + XML (Ajax) front-end technologies in combination with your choice of back-end technology: PHP, Rails, Java™ technologywhatever you like.
After playing with my iPhone and doing all the usual stuff like calling people, playing with Google Maps, and listening to tunes with the iPod functionality, it was time to develop something specifically for the phone. So, the question becomes, what to develop?
Well, one thing that I missed from my old phone was the Salling Clicker application. Salling Clicker turns any phone into a remote control for a Macintosh (and now, computers running Microsoft Windows, as well). Using the clicker application on the phone, I can launch AppleScripts on my Macintosh computer to do all kinds of useful things, such as controlling Apple iTunes or KeyNote (Apple's alternative to Microsoft Office PowerPoint®). On smart phones, this functionality required a small downloaded application on the phone. But the iPhone doesn't allow you to download special applications, because Apple Safari, the Web browser, is the SDK. So, how could I use Safari to control my Mac?

Apple Secures Europe iPhone Revenue Deals
The Financial Times's Astrid Maier in Hamburg and Volker Muller report:
Apple has succeeded in committing European mobile phone operators that want exclusively to sell its new iPhone to share parts of their revenues with the technology group.
The contract, which was signed by three European mobile operators in recent days, requires that the operators hand over to Apple 10 per cent of the revenues made from calls and data transfers by customers over iPhones.
The contract was signed by T-Mobile of Germany, Orange of France and O2 in the UK, people familiar with the situation told FT Deutschland, the Financial Times's sister paper.

Apple's iPhone Sales May Top Goal, UBS's Reitzes Says
Bloomberg's Crayton Harrison reports:
Apple Inc. may sell more than 800,000 iPhones this quarter, beating the company's goal of 730,000, as consumer demand for the device stays strong, UBS AG analyst Benjamin Reitzes said.
Retail outlets of Apple and AT&T Inc., which offer the phone exclusively in the U.S., have reported ``solid demand,'' Reitzes said today in a research note. His estimate for sales of the device, which combines an iPod music player with a mobile handset, is ``conservative,'' he said.
Chief Executive Officer Steve Jobs said last month he expects to sell 1 million iPhones by the end of this quarter, adding to the company's sales of iPods and personal computers. Cupertino, California-based Apple reported 270,000 iPhone sales last quarter after the product debuted June 29.

Why the iPhone is on hold in Canada
The Montreal Gazette's Marc Saltzman reports:
Unless your white iPod earphones have been stuck in your ears over the past six months, no doubt by now you've heard Apple is about to launch the most eagerly anticipated gadget of the year - if not in the history of the consumer electronics industry.
The iPhone ( http://www.apple.com/iphone ), which combines a widescreen media player, smartphone and host of Internet services ranging from messaging to navigation - is as gorgeous as it is functional. It also features a revolutionary "flick" interface that lets you use your fingertip on the touch-screen to navigate through all your content. It includes a 2-megapixel camera and integrated Wi-Fi for high-speed wireless surfing.
That sound you just heard was millions of gadget geeks salivating. But if you're Canadian you can save your energy.
Despite some premature hype in the Great White North... the iPhone is strictly for the U.S. market.
Apple is selling the phone in an exclusive partnership with cell carrier AT&T (formerly Cingular Wireless)....
Who will carry it in Canada?
"There was initial speculation it would launch at the same time with Rogers (Wireless) in Canada but it was pure speculation," says Eddie Chan, a research analyst at IDC Canada's Mobile/Personal Computing & Technology division.....
Let's be clear, though: Rogers Wireless has not confirmed it will carry the iPhone. But the industry buzz is that the iPhone will debut in Canada via the national cell carrier by the end of the year.
Rogers has so far declined to comment.

The Regression Of The Internet On iPhone
iphonematters.com's Tanner Godarzi says:
While Steve had promised us a web browsing experience unparalleled to that of any smart phone web masters and Bloggers seem to be taking the iPhone's slight limitations a bit too far with iPhone "optimized" web sites.
While creating content for a 3.5 inch screen running a resolution of 480 x 320 is not the easiest device to develop for, it needs very little adjustments. We have zooming capabilities and can turn the iPhone sideways.
Still web developers feel compelled, no driven to produce crap-tastic versions of their web sites. Web Applications ....

Customers can sue AT&T, after all
The Register's Cade Metz reports:
A federal court in San Francisco has decided that AT&T's wireless contract is "unconscionable".
On Friday, the US Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit came out against AT&T's "arbitration clause," which forbids wireless customers from bringing class-action suits against the company.
Arbitration clauses are quite common in the US, as companies do their darndest to bury expensive consumer suits before they even get started, and the new ruling could go a long way towards curbing the practice....
In February of last year, AT&T customer Kenneth Shroyer brought a class-action suit against the company on behalf of AT&T customers everywhere, claiming he had "suffered injuries" thanks to the company's behavior in the wake of its merger with wireless provider Cingular. His claims include breach of contract and untrue advertising, among others.
