288 According to market research stats., iCab enjoys a less than one percent share of the Mac Web browser market, which is a shame because it's an excellent program that deserves wider use. I have conducted no formal benchmarking, after putting 4.0.1 through its paces for a few weeks, my seat-of-the-pants impression is that it's now playing in the same league speed-wise as Firefox and Safari.

The only major feature still missing in iCab is a session restore function, which is now included in Opera, Firefox, Safari, and Camino, and conspicuous by its absence in iCab.

Active development of iCab continues, and version 4.0.1 Beta 44 was released last Friday - a maintenance update that adds a few refinements and tweaks to the already speedy and solid browser. Note that iCab's interim beta releases are offered only to registered users.

The most notable new feature in this new iCab beta is the ability to save Web pages as PDF files.

New in Beta 44:

• Bugfix: When loading a session file while no window was open, the session was not loaded.

• When dragging the Icon of the URL field into other applications to add the URL there, iCab will now provide the URL and the page title in some additional formats. This way the destination application has more choices to get the URL and title.

• The "YouTube Video Download" filter from the folder "Filter Manager Examples" is improved now. It will now offer to download the video as Flash movie or as MP4 movie (though the MP4 format is not yet avaiable for all videos). So when you're already using the Youtube download filter you should import the new filter again to replace the old one.

• Javascript code is now able to use databases (via "window.openDatabase()")

• When saving a web page, iCab will now also offer to save it as PDF file. So it is no longer necessary to use the "print" command to save it as PDF file. Using the "save" command is much more intuitive.

• Because of a bug in WebKit the CSS rule "display:none" doesn't work properly for object and embed elements. A new workaround is now implemented for the filter manager so that these elements can be filtered out nevertheless.

New in Beta 43:

• The new keyboard shortcut Control-Alt-T can be used to switch on the Tabs Toolbar when it is hidden (for example because the window only contains one single document and iCab is configured to hide the Tabs toolbar in this case). The shortcut can be useful if the user wants to drag the document of this window as Tab into another window to combine the two windows into a single one.

• iCab nuw supports the ".url" files of Internet Explorer (Windows or Mac version). These files are the windows counterpart of the "webloc" files on the Mac.

• Double-clicking a folder in the history window will no longer try to open the wohle content of this folder as Tabs or Windows. Now the folder itself will open or close itself.

• Colors and bold face text in the error report window help to find the important keywords.

• Syntax hilighting for the source code window implemented

• iCab now remembers the last choice of the file format option of the "Save" dialog box (WebArchive, Safari Archive, HTML or Text) and will preselect the last choice the next time the save box is opened again..

• If iCab is configured to pass FTP links to an external FTP application, iCab is doing this much faster now when a FTP link is clicked.

• Dragging the Icon of the URL field to the Finder will now create a "webloc" file with the document title as file name. Befor eht eURL was used for the file name.

• Small correction when zooming images.

• When loading Session files iCab will now (optionally) ask if it is OK to overwrite the current session with the one from the file or if the current session should be saved before the file will be loaded. This confirmation can be anabled/disabled in the "General" preferences in the "Other" tab
