The Germany-based GMX Webmail email service claims more 10,000,000 satisfied users, of which this writer has been one for better than a decade. I signed up for a German language GMX account back in the late '90s, and it's been a reliable mainstay ever since working flawlessly, extremely dependable with no downtime that I can recall over the years, and with very efficient spam filtering too. I have enough German (although I'm nowhere near fluent) to get along on the GMX Website for account configuration and management.

However, last year GMX made its free email service availiable worldwide in localized versions. offering 5 GB of email storage space for free.

GMX offers a wide choice of free addresses ending in @gmx.com, @gmx.us or @gmx.co.uk, and if you're not sure you've found the perfect name, GMX allows you at any time to add up to 10 free e-mail addresses which all forward to your mailbox, so you can switch to GMX for the extra space and and keep using your other email addresses.

The GMX Mail Collector feature takes all messages from your existing accounts to be collected and sorted into separate folders in your GMX mailbox, all inspected by GMX's professional virus protection and spam protection tools.

GMX Mail's interface is cross-platform compatible with Windows, Linux and Mac OS/X with official support for Internet Explorer or Firefox, although I find it works OK with most browsers.

To manage your emails using GMX's Drag & Drop functionality, simply create a folder, give it a name, and populate it with as many e-mails as you'd like. If you're searching for a specific e-mail, GMX's intelligent search function helps you find what you're looking for quickly.

Emails sent via GMX can have formatted text, photos or emoticons, and even personalized backgrounds.

GMX Mail supports attachments up to 50 MB, is which enough capacity to send an hour's worth of MP3s, or 50 high resolution digital photos. If you want you can also access your GMX mailbox with POP3 mail programs and/or IMAP clients.

GMX's email accounts are hosted in high security data centers with redundant systems, which means all of your mails and storage data are secured automatically in several different locations.

GMX Mail also applies seven sophisticated anti-spam modules which work hand-in-hand to provide a nearly leak-proof spam barrier. You don't need to configure anything. The modules Header Analyzer, Spam Server Blocker, GMX Anti-Spam List and Global Anti-Spam List automatically do their job.

Moreover, you get your personal Black- and Whitelist so you can adapt your Spam Protection to suit your personal needs.

GMX's Text Pattern Profiler module over time learns to successfully identify unwanted e-mails and diverts them accordingly.

GMX provides users with confidence when dealing with file attachments. Every email in the system is automatically inspected for viruses, Trojans and other malware. This also applies to emails retrieved from your other email accounts via Mail Collector service.

GMX applies the best anti-virus products from partners McAfee and Symantec, software also used by financial institutions and the military. And that‚ is serious security.
