FileSpot: Power And Usability Come To Spotlight

957 Press Release Edited By Applelinks Contributing Editor Charles W. Moore

FileSpot is an application that provides an enhanced interface to Apple's Spotlight searching tool found in Mac OS X 10.4. FileSpot allows you to create more powerful searches than is possible using the basic Spotlight interface, while improving usability.

FileSpot was designed not just as a searching tool, but as a utility that keeps recently used documents and applications right at your fingertips. All searches in FileSpot are automatically sorted according to when each items was most recently modified, opened, or created, which means that items that you have worked on recently will be right at the top of the search results. As files are modified, opened, or created, they bubble to the top of the list, keeping them easily accessible.

FileSpot has many advantages over the basic Spotlight interface:

Advanced Query Creation
• FileSpot uses the familiar iTunes or Finder query creation interface metaphor to allow you to create complex queries. AND's, OR's, All, Any's, Nones and Nots - We have them. How about searching over the advanced meta-data of your filesystem? Type, Tags, Size, Dates Last opened. We do that too. Combine, Mix and match, exclude, and create any complex query with FileSpot. Try doing that in Spotlight!

Precise Matching
• FileSpot gives you complete control over what is searched. Do you want to match your query to just the file name, content, or spotlight comments? Do you want to only find files that contain, but do not start or end with your word? FileSpot makes it easy to define exactly what you want.

Tagging
• Not all files have all the info you want already - so why not add it yourself? FileSpot makes it easy to tag and label your files, using spotlight comments and finder labels. FileSpot tags are compatible with other Mac OS X 3rd-party tagging software.

Custom Columns
• Every file type has its own set of metadata, so why force the same basic columns on all of your files? In FileSpot, any metadata attribute can be made into a column. Want to sort by image width? MP3 tags? You can.

Details, Details, Details.
• The basic Spotlight interface makes you jump through hoops to view details about a file. In FileSpot, the gory details are only a click away.

Save your searches
• Once you have your perfect search created, save it. FileSpot comes pre-setup with 10 popular searches to start you off.

Features for the techie inside of you
Need the HFS path? Want to copy or move files directly from the interface? Need to edit the spotlight comments by hand? Need to create aliases, or run services on a file? Through contextual menus, FileSpot makes it easy to do the techie things before and more.

Preview
• Not only can you see details, but for most common file types, FileSpot can show you a preview as well. Talk about finding your information fast.

Be Exclusive
• Don't want to find too many files? Only want to search in certain directories? FileSpot makes it easy to be exclusive with how many results you receive, and where your results come from.

Search within a search
If your saved search is still too broad, FileSpot makes it easy to quickly drill down and search within a search. Not your fancy? FileSpot can jump-to entries instead.

System Requirements:

• Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger) or later
• PowerPC or Intel Mac
