A few days ago I had a chat with a Mac-using friend of mine and Jef Raskin's name came
up. Jef, as many people know, is the original father of the Macintosh. Except the Mac
he envisioned is not the one we have today since Steve Jobs took over the Mac project
from Jef and remade it in his own image. Jef has sort of become a black sheep in the
Apple community as his controversial ideas for interface design have not been widely
accepted, and he's famous for criticizing the Mac (as well as Windows and other GUIs....
Now I don't know Jef, and I don't necessarily agree with all his interface ideas. But
I do think his is a valuable voice to have in the computer industry. Us Mac fans don't
like to hear it, but the Mac isn't perfect, and we have a long, long way to go to get
computers to be as easy to use as they should be.
