Coach Guitar Audio-Visual Guitar Instruction App For iOS - Applelinks Review

6426 I learned to play guitar the old way back in the early ’70s, by way of a combination of experimentation, chord charts and sheet music or books with tablature, trolling for tips from or just watching better guitar players (which was pretty much all other guitar players I knew in the painful early going), and plenty of practice -- preferably out of earshot of others. It would have been so much easier and immeasurably quicker with Coach Guitar, a new, free iOS app from Manomaya SA.

Coach Guitar uses a teaching concept solely based on a visual method so users can learn how to play popular songs on their acoustic guitar without knowledge of either music theory or tablature.

In step-by-step video lessons with an animated fretboard, Coach Guitar uses video, sound, and slow-motion to walk anyone who has the rudiments of guitar technique through the riffs and runs of a range of popular songs, including four that come bundled with the free app, plus a large library of others that can be added as $3.99 a pop in-app purchases. Checking out the free four should amply demonstrate what Coach Guitar can do for you, and most likely convince you that you want this app., and it's a lot cheaper and more convenient than taking guitar lessons.

In the Coach Guitar library there are presently over 70 selections with new songs added weekly. The library includes detailed information about each song and artist, a short audio clip of the song, and the level of difficulty. Coach Guitar includes songs for all levels of ability including Beginners, Intermediate, and Advanced.

Each song is broken down into short video tutorials that include step-by-step instructions. Users learn the song by watching the close-up highly detailed, high definition video clips that display the guitar neck, strings and fingering.

There is also an animated fretboard to show the user correct fingering and which strings to strum.

The black fretboard represents the guitar neck and colored dots represent each finger. To assist with the learning process, videos can be slowed down and looped.

Coach Guitar Feature Highlights:
* Step-by-step guitar training
* Redesigned interface for a better and smarter experience
* No previous knowledge of music theory or guitar tablature necessary
* Video lessons in HD
* Ability to view training videos in slow motion or loop
* Animated color-coded fretboard
* Backing track with voice
* Left-handed and right-handed views
* Structure and chords diagram
* Guitar tabs included
* Social integration with Facebook and ability to share progress with friends
* Songs for all levels including Beginners, Intermediate, and Advanced

* New songs added to the library each week

In addition to several bug fixes, Coach Guitar version 2.0.1 includes a completely redesigned interface. Users can now browse lessons in the new library by filtering according to difficulty, date, top sales, and alphabetical. Coach Guitar allows users to unlock badges, reach new level skills and share progress with friends on Facebook. Additionally, the new activity feed shows what has been achieved in Coach Guitar.

This is an excellent app at what it does. Like I said, I wish Coach Guitar had been around when I was learning guitar 40-odd years ago. However, IMHO the $3.99 per song cost is a bit steep, even if one can't argue with the price of basic admission. Coach Guitar gets a 4 out of 5 Applelinks rating.
