CherryOS release delayed… again.

882 Okay, quick recap: CherryOS claims to be a fast, efficient emulator that allows OS X to be run on PC hardware. It's creator claims that he wrote it himself in a few months. People are skeptical. The creators of PearPC, an Open Source software project trying to accomplish the same thing, get hold of the "beta version" and discover that it contains their code. CherryOS claims that that was the mistake of an employee who was fired.

They also stated that a complete, PearPC-free version of CherryOS would be released on November 25th, along with a trial version. Well, guess what?

CherryOS has announced that the release has been delayed until next year.

CherryOS Trial and Purchase Download Available Q1 2005

We at Maui X-Stream (MXS) wish to communicate the current and future status of CherryOS.

On Tuesday, October 12, MXS — a software development company that specializes in video streaming, custom applications and web development — announced the immediate availability of CherryOS software. The announcement signaled a breakthrough in emulation development by providing a software emulator which allows Windows PC users to run Apple’s OS on x86 computer architecture, while preserving network capabilities and access to the host computer’s hardware resources.

As a direct result of the overwhelming response to our October 12 announcement, and in order to provide current and future customers with the timely service and attention such high-volume demand requires, MXS has chosen to extend the beta development for CherryOS. In order to accommodate those who were inconvenienced by the interruption of immediate access to the CherryOS download, and to further validate this breakthrough product, MXS will provide a free trial download of the CherryOS software, in addition to the purchase download in early 2005.

The PearPC news page had this comment:

There is not much going on in PearPC land at the moment. But tomorrow the new PPC emulator CherryOS was supposed to be released. Unfortunately, the release date has been pushed back again. The new date is set to "Q1 2005". There was also supposed to be a trial version, so you can try it before you buy.

Now you can go back to sleep again...

Those who claim that CherryOS simply does not exist will no doubt count this in the "win" column, along with those who suggest that Maui X-Stream (the company "distributing" the software) created the story as a way to stress test their Java video server (which had been used on the website to demonstrate aspects of CherryOS) by directing a lot of traffic to the site.

Me, I'm still waiting for my XTreme 1.2 GHz Macintosh to show up.

Bill's been using Macs since the late 80s. When he's not making smartass remarks to amuse Kirk Hiner, he enjoys fighting for the user.
