CaminoSession 0.86 and UnifyCamino 0.96 - Hands On Mac Mini-Review

2977 It's no exaggeration to say that CaminoSession is what tipped the balance and made Camino my workaday browser.

One of the great features of Opera, which is the OS X Web browser I've used most over the past couple of years, and more recently Firefox 2 is their ability to restore a browsing session after a program quit or crash. One of the reasons I detest restarting my computers is that I usually have a dozen or so browser tabs open at any given time, and restoring that is a big time-burner. However, a session restore function is not yet included in in the OS X-only Camino browser, which in most other respects is my favorite ofr the Mozilla Gecko browser variants. It certainly is the prettiest.

CaminoSession is a session management plugin for the Camino web browser that allows you to automatically or manually restore the windows and tabs you had open last time you used Camino. If Camino crashes, CaminoSession will let you restart where you left off, and after using it for a couple of months, I'm delighted to give it an enthusiastic thumbs-up. It's free, works perfectly, and has caused no problems. What more could you ask?

CaminoSession is a modest 548k download. To install, just mount the disk image and double-click 'Install CaminoSession'.

The next time you run Camino, session management will be enabled.

If you find that the CaminoSession preference pane doesn't appear after installation, run 'Fix PrefPane' in the 'Extras' directory.

CaminoSession adds two selections to Camino's "Go" menu: "Save Session" and "Restore Session." There is also a crash dialog that gives you the option of deleting any or all tabs that you suspect might have contributed to the crash before restoring the session.

• CaminoSession Auto-restore

By default, CaminoSession remembers your windows and tabs every time you quit Camino, and restores them every time you start. CaminoSession includes a Preference Pane for Camino (select 'Preferences' from the Camino menu). This allows you to turn off auto-save and auto-restore. You can manually save the window arrangement at any time using 'Save Session' (apple-shift-S) in the 'Go' menu. You can manually restore using 'Restore Session' (apple-shift-E).

• CaminoSession Crash protection

If CaminoSession detects that Camino crashed, the next time you start Camino, it will give you the option of restoring the state of your windows before the crash (also settable in the Preference Pane).

New in version 0.4:
Improved crash handling -- you can restore only selected tabs.

System requirements:
Mac OS X 10.3 or later,
CaminoSession works in Camino versions 1.0 to 1.0.3 (and in trunk/branch developer builds earlier than about 2006-11-15). If you're using a version of CaminoSession less than 0.7, upgrade to the latest version.

A companion plugin ti CaminoSession is UnifyCamino which changes the colour of the bookmarks toolbar so that it matches the 'unified' toolbar look on Mac OS X 10.4. Optionally, it can also apply a streamlined look to the tabs and status bar, or apply any custom theme to the whole Camino interface.

image

UnifyCamino includes a Preference Pane for Camino (select 'Preferences' from the Camino menu). It allows you to disable toolbar unification, to change the toolbar shade on the fly, and to remove the dividing line between the main toolbar and the bookmarks bar.

image

The Preference Pane also allows you to install a custom theme for Camino. You can use the 'streamlined' tabs and status bar that are included with UnifyCamino by just checking the appropriate box. Alternatively, if you have downloaded other custom themes, check the 'Custom theme' box, and select the directory containing the custom theme. If you have CaminIcon installed, UnifyCamino will present the CaminIcon directory so you can select a theme from there.

Similar theming abilities are offered by CaminIcon. CaminIcon provides a much better interface, but UnifyCamino has two advantages. First, you can customize the status bar. Second, your theme will be remembered when you install new versions of Camino. Once you've chosen or customized a theme using CaminIcon, you can install it semi-permanently with UnifyCamino.

The current version is 0.96

System requirements:
UnifyCamino works in all recent versions of Camino (1.0 and greater) on Mac OS X 10.4.
