Apple Looking Into Liquid-Cooled MacBooks

Appleinsider's Slash Lane reports:

Apple is looking into the use of liquid coolants to transport heat in its notebook computer designs, a controversial technique it employed briefly on its line of dual processor Power Mac G5s several years ago.

In a 12-page patent request originally filed in May of last year and published for the first time last week, the Mac maker notes that significant increases in the computational performance of electronic devices over the past few years has made it harder to maintain acceptable internal and external operational temperatures in those devices.

A move towards liquid cooling on its notebook lines wouldn't be Apple's first foray into the liquid cooling Mac business. In the spring of 2004, the company introduced the liquid-cooled dual 2.5GHz PowerMac G5.... they resembled miniature automobile radiators and included a pump, radiator, grills, and a power cable....

Use of the liquid cooling systems were short lived, however, as they were prone to leaks.....

Apple Moves To Patent Liquid-Cooled Notebooks

Cult of Mac's Ed Sutherland reports:

Apple has filed two patents bringing liquid-cooling to increasingly powerful (and hot) laptop computers. Once the domain of massive number-crunchers, liquid-cooled notebooks foresee a day when quad-core processors and better video overwhelms current fan-driven cooling....

The active liquid-cooling process involves bathing circuits, the heat relieved via fins. A more inexpensive passive liquid-cooling procedure would include a heat sink located behind the laptop's display. Moving the heat away from the computer's body could solve the dilemma of an overheated lap.....

In 2007, HP unveiled a line of Voodoo laptops which used water instead of fans to cool the gaming machines.

The Leopard Experience at 867 MHz

Low End Mac'sSimon Royal reports:

I recently wrote about how nicely Leopard runs on PowerPC Macs. I just acquired an 867 MHz PowerBook G4. It needed some work (broken screen and no keyboard), but I have restored it and it works fine.

This is the slowest Mac to officially be supported by Mac OS X 10.5 "Leopard". For anyone wondering whether running a such a high spec modern OS on an older Mac works well, I say go for it. You will be surprised. I was.

I am no stranger to old Macs and pushing them to their limits, but this is by no means stretching it on an 867 MHz G4. Leopard really runs very smooth, very fast, and is more than just useable.... nothing lags on it. The Finder is snappy, CoverFlow is surprisingly sprightly. Running the usual bunch of apps - browsers, email clients, photo editing, and office suites - nothing seems to cause me any pain or stress the Mac out.

Apple's Snow Leopard Still Evolving, Developers Say

Appleinsider's Slash Lane reports:

Although there's been some evidence to suggest Snow Leopard could hit the market several months ahead of expectations, new information reveals that Apple remains heavily engaged in building out some of the features first previewed back in June.

In particular, developers on the web note that new copies of the software surfacing this week arrived with fresh additions to Grand Central, a new architecture designed by Apple to make it easier for programmers to take advantage of Macs with two or many processor cores. At the same time, some previously available functions have changed.

Save time With OS X Services

Macworld's Ted Landau reports:

As a Mac user, you're primed to look for time-savers that help you be more productive. But you may not be taking advantage of all that OS X has to offer. The Services menu is a case in point. This little known, and even more rarely used, feature deserves more attention than it gets. Services provide systemwide commands that allow you to quickly accomplish a variety of tasks, such as sending Mail messages lickety-split or making a new Stickies note from a selection. If you're not already using the Services menu, you'll soon discover how it can boost your productivity.

Browser-Based 'Cloud' OS Launched For Netbooks

CNET's Matthew Elliott reports:

Good OS, the company behind the Linux-based gOS found on the $199 (134) Wal-Mart gPC last year, announced a browser-based OS called 'Cloud' at the Netbook World Summit in Paris on Monday.

The Cloud OS features a browser with an integrated, Mac OS X-like dock and a Linux kernel that boots "in seconds", according to the company. The browser looks similar to Google's Chrome, though no official connection between Google and gOS exists.

Whassup with Netbooks?

ZNet's Dana Blankenhorn says:

It has suddenly become fashionable to diss the Netbook.

Some of the blame goes to Intel, which didn't understand who its buyers might be.

I remember when cars like my Toyota Scion and the Honda Element came out their makers assumed they would sell to first-time car buyers, kids. Instead they got people like me. Many now call the Element the Elderment.....

In my Linux Laptop series I described some of the Netbooks' problems, as seen by friends and relatives. So let's focus on what we have learned....

The Netbook represents an enormous change for how we think of computers, as well as how we use them. It has not been a failure. It has been a start, and a pretty quick one at that.

Who Put The 'Crap' In 'Crapintosh'?

ZNet's Elliot Harrison says:

The hate campaign certain Windows users have against Macintosh users must stop! Not only are these naughty people so very ill informed, but also quite rude. This article will explore (with genuine fact) why exactly Macintosh is more productive, cheaper, better looking and more reliable to invest your student money in than anywhere else....

A business Mac user gets $24,000 more work done per year, his or her computer is down 14% less, and it costs less to support than any other platform..... Not only that it'll last longer and not be worth nothing once you've got it home. It's a no brainer, really.....

There really is too much to say about Apple. Please students of the world, if this article has struck a chord with you, and you want to be the coolest student on campus, and still have some spare cash left, just get a Mac; it's so very easy. Trust me, I've got one.
