While Windows applications tend to dominate the Christian software category, there are still quite a few good Bible study and resource programs are available for the Mac platform, including several new and revised ones that are OS X native.
Here's a quick look at what I think is most of them, and apologies to the authors of any such programs I've missed. I haven't used all of the applications outlined here, but my current favorites are BibleViewer in OS 9, and Bible Reader Free and MacSword in OS X -- all of which are freeware. However, there are plenty more to choose from.
Accordance 6.0 Bible Study Software
One of the most comprehensive and widely used Mac Bible study packages is Accordance 6, state-of-the-art in Bible software that offers an easy to use and integrated approach to Bible study. Now on several CD-ROMs, Accordance offers a full library of texts and study aids, powerful Greek and Hebrew grammatical searches, and an interactive Bible Atlas.
Accordance is Bible software for everyone, from seminary students and scholars to those who read the English Bible or teach at any level. Accordance comes on a wide range of CD-ROMs, the primary collections of Bibles with dictionaries and other tools, and a variety of other CD-ROMs which expand the capabilities of the software with additional modules.
Accordance offers accessible and integrated approach to Bible study. Strong's numbers display and link to the Greek and Hebrew. An Amplify palette gives instant access to all Bible texts, lexicons, commentaries, and other resources. Virtually everything in Accordance is accessible with a single click of the mouse, including contextual help.
Advanced features include graphical searching, statistical analyses, and global searching. Users can also add advanced Greek and Hebrew resources which allow elaborate grammatical searches. More than 150 Accordance-compatible modules are available on a variety of CD-ROMs, but all purchased modules are completely integrated into the Accordance library. Select text in any window, and a single mouse-click lets you find your selection in any text or tool. Five CD-ROMs contain collections of texts and tools centered on particular Bible versions. The interactive Bible Atlas lets you explore the lands of the Bible: build your own maps, follow animated routes, and navigate three-dimensional landscapes. Additional specialized CD-ROMs include the Bible Lands PhotoGuide, Anchor Bible Dictionary, and Church Fathers.
New in the Version 6 Upgrade
Accordance underwent the first-ever complete redesign of its interface for version 6, offering a streamlined OS X appearance. Accordance 6 is easier than ever to use, and adds even more features to enhance your study of the Bible.
The primary collections are:
Accordance Library 6
for English Bible studies
Scholar's Collection 6
for Greek or Hebrew studies
and
Jewish Collection 2 for the Hebrew Bible (with English)
Compubiblia para Mac for the Spanish version
Accordance takes full advantage of the Macintosh interface (from OS X to system 7.1), but can also be run on a PC with the addition of an emulator.
System requirements:
Version 6.0 is fully compatible with Mac OS 10.3 but still runs on any Mac OS from 7.1 up.
Accordance sells for $39.00

MacSword 0.3 Bible Research And Study Tool
MacSword is a new, freeware & open-source Bible research and study application developed specifically for Macintosh computers running Mac OS X.

And because MacSword is based on the multi-platform Sword project, it is compatible with a growing collection of over 200 texts available in over 50 languages, including many different Bible translations in languages from Hebrew to Albanian, as well as reading devotionals, commentaries, dictionaries and lexicons which can be downloaded and added as module plugins, MacSword also supports searching and advanced features such as services so that you can access the Bible in any program.
There are over 200 modules in 50 languages that are all available from the Crosswire Bible Society. Including bibles, commentaries, lexicons, dictionaries and devotionals.
You can get modules from http://www.crosswire.org/sword/modules/ . The default module location is in a "Modules" folder in the same place as the application. You can change where MacSword looks for them in the preferences. To install modules just place the uncompressed module folder (eg. "KJV Folder") in the same folder as all your other modules.
Module Add-ins allow you to expand the functionality and your library of resources for your Sword-based software.
The Sword Project http://www.crosswire.org/sword/index.jsp is an effort to create a software platform for research and study of God and His Word. The open source model is the basis of development, maximizing the rapid growth and features of this project by leveraging the contributions of many developers. Components of the project include all types of Biblical texts and helps, a portable, platform-agnostic engine to access them, and a variety of front ends to bring this to as many users as possible.
The Sword Project is licensed under the GNU General Public License (GPL), an open source license approved by the Open Source Initiative (OSI). When software source is licensed under the GPL license, its source code must be available as well, so that any user of the product can alter it, recompile it, and reconfigure it. But any changes, fixes, or upgrades that are made to that source code must be made available to the public in source code form. Anyone who buys the product is free to recopy, alter, or redistribute the product as well, so long as the GPL is followed.
As noted there are a wide variety of Sword modules, including some two dozen different English language Bible or New Testament translations. The version of MacSword that I downloaded included a King James Version module. One caveat is that most of the recent translations are not in the public domain, so while the modules exist, they are not available for public download.
Sword notes:
"Unfortunately we are unable to legally provide these modules to the general public at this time. We are making attempts to gain permission from the copyright holders, and we hope to be able to provide some of these to you soon."

iBible 2.6 Bible Lookup, Translation, Reading Software
iBible was the first Bible software designed specifically for Macintosh OSX. Designed with you in mind, iBible works like OSX works. Surfing for Bible chapters, verses and ranges of verses is as simple as a mouse click.

Features:
Surf the Bible iBible is designed to get you up and running in no time. With one click of a button on your first launch, you're reading the Bible. With another click, you're reading another chapter.
Quickly jump to a verse, range or chapter For those who love keyboard shortcuts, iBible's Command-J shortcut is a blessing! With it, you can simply type a few letters of the book you want to jump to, tab to the chapter field and type a chapter (or chapter/verse combination), and you're there!
Search the Bible You can search iBible with a simple phrase search, or you can narrow down the search to specific books or a range of books, searching for a phrase or for combinations of words.
Keep track of your reading With iBible, you can remember where you read last simply by looking in the History menu, which keeps track of a user-defined number of last-visited places in the Bible.
Bookmark favorite passages Can't remember where that one scripture is? When you find it with iBible's powerful search feature, bookmark it with a simple keystroke — and retitle the bookmark so you'll remember what it stands for.
Read Greek/Hebrew definitions Using the time-tested Strong's Lexicon definitions and numbering system, iBible lets you do further study by understanding Greek and Hebrew word definitions.
Copy formatted passages Explained in detail below, Copy Formatted lets you copy Bible passages and paste them into other programs, stripping out verse numbers and appending the range of verses copied to the end of the copied portion.
Snap to history When you launch iBible, it can snap back to the last place you visited, which is handy if you're using iBible to read through the Bible.
You can get all kinds of Bible software, but you've never seen anything like iBible's powerful "Copy Formatted" command.
If you're like us, when you copy passages from the Bible, you're annoyed to have to go through and re-format the copied portion. For instance, consider this passage, copied the normal way:
13 I know thy works, and where thou dwellest, even where Satan's seat is: and thou holdest fast my name, and hast not denied my faith, even in those days wherein Antipas was my faithful martyr, who was slain among you, where Satan dwelleth.
14 But I have a few things against thee, because thou hast there them that hold the doctrine of Balaam, who taught Balac to cast a stumbling-block before the children of Israel, to eat things sacrificed unto idols, and to commit fornication.
15 So hast thou also them that hold the doctrine of the Nicolaitans, which thing I hate.
You can immediately see the problems:
There's no telling where this passage comes from
You're going to have to go through and delete the verse numbers and the carriage returns
There are no quotation marks around the verse
But the same passage copied with "Copy formatted":
"I know thy works, and where thou dwellest, even where Satan's seat is: and thou holdest fast my name, and hast not denied my faith, even in those days wherein Antipas was my faithful martyr, who was slain among you, where Satan dwelleth. But I have a few things against thee, because thou hast there them that hold the doctrine of Balaam, who taught Balac to cast a stumbling-block before the children of Israel, to eat things sacrificed unto idols, and to commit fornication. So hast thou also them that hold the doctrine of the Nicolaitans, which thing I hate."
(Revelation 2:13-15)
The advantages are:
The verse numbers are removed for you
The passage is surrounded by quotation marks
The book, chapter and verse range is automatically inserted at the end of the passage for you
In addition, iBible offers quick access to Strong's Hebrew and Greek Lexicon definitions of Bible words.
New in version 2.6:
Preferences apply changes to open windows. Previously, windows would need to be closed for preferences changes to be applied.
Hot-swapping of Bible versions. Previously, if a user with multiple versions of the Bible changed default versions in the Preferences dialog, restarting iBible was necessary. Now the new version loads while the program is running.
VASTLY improved loading speed. iBible formerly took about 15 seconds to load on my PowerBook 1GHz G4. It now takes about one second.
Search result count now displayed. Formerly iBible would display how many times a specified search string was found in the Bible. Subsequent versions deleted that feature for various reasons. 2.6 brings it back.
Respecting the Dock. iBible is a Carbon application, which made it difficult to respect the dock location, thus windows would sometimes be behind the dock. 2.6 respects the dock.
Added a version-checking system so users can see if they have the latest version of iBible, and prompts them to upgrade if a newer version is available online.
FINALLY squashed a bug where opening new display windows would cause the second window to appear EXACTLY over the top of the first one. This was a heinous error to track down!
Version pulldown menu in Preferences pane would not reflect the currently selected version. Fixed.
Icon issues in various dialog boxes were fixed.
About box now renders correctly.
In a note posted December 22, developer Lief Wright says:
I have abandoned the idea of releasing another iBible as a Carbon program. (The iBible 2.7 release has been scratched).
The reason is simple; I've made significant progress in the Cocoa version of iBible (I had a breakthrough tonight), and I've stretched the Carbon code as far as it can go. The Cocoa version runs faster than the Carbon version, and it's inherently much more stable. (It's farther away from release than the Carbon version, but I believe in the end it will be for the best).
I still plan on making all the improvements I listed below, but it will be much easier to accomplish in Cocoa. I'm excited about this project again.
Significantly, the Cocoa version (version 3) uses an XML format on the Bible, which means MANY more translations will be easily available to the reader, and I can publish easy-to-use specifications for you to expand iBible as far as you want to.
That's significant, because my vision is to allow you to include any translation you can find into iBible, as well as designing your own study helps to go with the ones I'm coming up with. In other words, Version 3 will hopefully be extremely extensible for users with average computer knowledge.
System requirements:
Mac OS X 10.0 or higher
iBible is $15.00 shareware. Those who cannot afford the $15 registration fee can request a donated copy of the software.

Bible Reader Free 0.96/Bible Reader Pro
Hiddenfield Software's Bible Reader Free, is now at version 0.96. Bible Reader Free is a free Bible viewing application for Mac OS X.

Bible Reader Free provides access to multiple books/chapters simultaneously. Features include the ability to search for words across all or select parts of the Bible, and apply 'swaps' automatically (where one word can be changed for another - like 'you' for 'thee').
There is also a Notes feature allowing for the creation of study notes, and the Copy Formatted feature allows one-click formatting of selected verses to the clipboard or a study note.
Bible Reader Free does not support the broad selection of content that MacSword does. Translations currently available: King James, Basic Bible English, Strongs, American Standard Version, Derby, Websters, Youngs.
I really like the Bible Reader Free interface and navigation/search features.
To use Bible Reader Free, open up a new Browser window [File->New Browser], then select the book of the Bible to read. If required, enter a chapter [and verse, separated by a ; ] into the chapter;verse field, then click Go (or press Return).
You can Open as many Browser windows as you like, to view different passages simultaneously.
Switching between the different translations is simplicity itself; just select an alternative one from the translation popup menu.
The Copy Format option from the Edit menu will take the selected verses and format them, before placing the text into the Clipboard.
The formatting encloses the selection in speechmarks, applies '...' to the start and/or end -- depending on whether the selection extends to the beginning/end of the verse/s -- and adds the verse reference below in brackets.
For example:
"...God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world..."
[John 3:16-17]
To conduct a search, open up the search dialog [Edit->Find], type in the word or phrase you wish to find. Choose the scope of the search from the popup menu. To select specific books only to search, click Select Books and make your choice there. Check 'whole words' to only find 'heal' and not 'healing' or 'healed', for example. Finally, click Find to retrieve all matches.
The Search Results window will appear. While the program performs the search, an indication of what book is currently being searched will be shown at the top. At any time, hold down Command to stop the search.
Selecting a search result from the list will display the context of the word/phrase in the field below the list. Double-clicking a search result will open a new Browser window [or use a currently-open one] and display the passage that contains that verse.
Click the Notes button at the bottom of any Browser window to show the Notes editor. This window can be left open for continued viewing/editing of notes as you browse the Bible.
On the Text Tab of the Preferences dialog, there is a Reading Mode option. Normal presents the Bible as you have most likely always seen it: with verse numbers before each verse.
Changing the Reading Mode to Story removes the verse numbers and formats the text with paragraph indents, more like a standard book. This is a quite a nice alternative way to read the Bible.
Another handy feature is Swaps. In essence, any word or phrase found in the text can be automatically swapped for another when browsing the Bible. As an example, the list of swaps that ships with Bible Viewer aims to replace many of the old-english words in the King James Version of the Bible with more modern words.
Now available as two downloads:
KJV Version - provided with the King James translation. This is a required translation for Bible Reader Free to function. But, if you have Bible Reader Free installed already...
Application only - excludes all translations.
Bible Reader Free also contains Swaps, a user-definable list of words or phrases that will replace matched words in the text: change the "thee"s and thou"s to "you"s and "your"s!
Create Notes for sharing or future study. Copy passages of text into your word processor, intelligently formatted, with one keystroke.
Bible Reader Free features:
6 Translations: ASV, BBE, Derby, KJV, YLT and Websters
Strong's Concordance
Browse multiple chapters and multiple translations simultaneously
Search specific chapters, books or sections, across any of the translations
Create and apply Swaps-change 'thee' to 'you' for example
Read passages without the distraction of verse numbers, in Story Mode
Take Notes and store them for later use
One-Click formatting of selected verses for use in other applications
Online Help and Quickstart Guide included

Bible Reader Pro
Bible Reader Pro is the Professional Edition of Bible Reader Free. It takes the same flexibility of its sibling and adds a number of 'let's go deeper' study features.
Bible Reader Free brings easy access to multiple translations, multi-book search, and the inclusion of the Swap system to Bible reading. Bible Reader Pro extends these by including:
The developers are aiming for New International Version, Amplified Version, and New King James, dependent on the ability to negotiate licenses where required.
Features:
Organize your Swaps into modes. Create simple 'thee's to 'you's as one list, then build a separate types and shadows group ('Egypt' in the Old Testament is a type of the World).
Create a study session. Make notes and store passages. Save to a single file for future study. Swap sessions with other users.
History browsing
As you browse, a list of visited chapters and verses will be kept for you. Use this to quickly jump around.
Split-screen Browsing
View 2 separate passages side by side.
Bible Reader Pro will be available "in the not too distant future."

Bible Viewer 2.01
HolyMac Software's BibleViewer 2.01 is an electronic, searchable edition of the Holy Bible that I have used for years. It still works great in OS X Classic Mode.

BibleViewer is quick and easy to use and has a simple, clean, Mac-like interface. Navigation within the text of the Bible is fast and intuitive User settable bookmarks can mark locations or selections, and an efficient search engine provides nearly instantaneous access to text matching any entered phrase or word criteria.
BibleViewer features:
fast, so that you can search the contents
small, so that you don't waste memory
simple, so that you can use it easily
smart, so that you can bookmark particular passages
flexible, so that you can change its appearance
System requirements are modest and simple: BibleViewer will run happily on any Apple Macintosh or Mac clone running the Classic MacOS.
The main change in BibleViewer 2.x from earlier versions is that it uses a modern English translation, the World English Bible, a public domain (no copyright) Modern English translation of the Holy Bible, based on the American Standard Version of 1901, the Biblia Hebraica Stutgartensa Old Testament, and the Greek Majority Text New Testament, rather than the Authorized Version of 16ll (King James Version) that was used in BibleBrowser. Traditionalists like me who love the KJV's majestic cadences will not necessarily regard this innovation as an improvement, but it should broaden BibleViewer's appeal, and the KJV version is still available for those who prefer it. In addition there have been improvements made in various interface elements of the program, including the online help.
The American Standard Version (ASV) is a solid translation that has earned the reputation of being the "Rock of Biblical Honesty." Your reporter has used a print copy of the ASV as a reference for the past 25 years. While the English used in the ASV is somewhat archaic, it is easier understood by modern readers than some passages of the more familiar King James (Authorized) Version of 1611. The ASV is in the public domain, since its copyright has expired. You can download, a copy in HTML, a General Bible Format .zip file (asvgbf.zip), or a plain ASCII text version in a zip file at http://www.ebible.org/bible/asv/
The World English Bible used as the basis for BibleViewer 2.0 is essentially the ASV translation with some simple word replacements and a few grammatical adjustments that will be kept in the public domain. You can download the current draft of the WEB as an HTML file, plain ASCII text with poetry and prose formatting, General Bible Format text, or one line per verse ASCII text (no poetry or prose formatting or footnotes), at http://www.ebible.org/index.htm

MyBible 3.0 For The Palm PDA And PalmOS Compatibles
And finally, for Palm users, the Bible particularly lends itself to digitalization, because it is so frequently used as a reference, for which a search engine facilitates things immensely. I have three digital Bible applications on my PowerBook hard drive, and now Palm users can have a digital, searchable Bible database that they can carry in their pockets. MyBible gives you instant access to the entire text of the Bible on your 3Com Palm or Palm-compatible PDA.
Laridian's MyBible gives you instant access to the entire text of the Bible on your PDA. A tap the top of the screen scrolls up; tap the bottom to scroll down, or use the "up" and "down" buttons on your Palm to move through the text. Stroke right to go to the next chapter or left to go to the previous chapter.
To go to any verse in the Bible, tap the Bible reference in the upper right-hand corner of the screen and select the book from this list. Then enter the chapter and verse in the writing ("Graffiti") area.
To find all occurrences of any word or phrase in seconds, enter "command F" (or select "Find" from the menu) then write a word or phrase. Select how much of the Bible you want to search and tap the Find button. Excerpts from verses containing the word or phrase you're looking for are displayed. Just tap one to instantly view the full verse in context.
You can set a bookmark on any verse in the Bible by tapping the bookmark icon on the top of the screen and selecting "Set Bookmark." Go to any bookmarked passage by tapping the bookmark icon and selecting the verse to which you want to go. And delete a bookmark by first going there, then selecting "Delete Bookmark" from the bookmark list.
If you want to compare translations, just purchase and install two (or more) Bible databases. Tap the name of the translation to quickly switch between them to compare wording. Instantly, you'll be looking at the same passage in the new translation.
Each Bible database in MyBible requires 1.5MB RAM. If that's too much, each of the Bibles is delivered in pieces from which you can select individual books to remove if you don't have room for the entire Bible. For example, if you don't want to take up most of the available RAM on your 2MB Palm VII, you can install just the New Testament, Psalms and Proverbs. But a 4MB Palm IIIx can easily hold two entire Bibles, and an 8MB Visor Deluxe or Palm Vx handles 3 or 4 without difficulty.
The MyBible program and its accompanying Bibles are sold separately. You need to purchase the program itself and one or more Bibles when you order. Some Bibles come with the translator's footnotes. These can be optionally installed.
MyBible with the KJV Gospels is free.
Looking for the New International Version (NIV) Bible for your Palm? Look no further! MyBible is the only Bible software product for Palm organizers to offer the NIV. Click here for more information!
