Ten Rules of the Cheap Revolution
Forbes' Rich Karlgaard says there is a dynamic in play in the world economy that began unnoticed in the 1950s with two concepts:scientific description of DNA's double-helix structure, and invention of the integrated circuit -- two innovations that enabled rise companies to double their capabilities every two years or so thereby radically changing the relationship between power and value -- a phenomenon he calls "the Cheap Revolution."
Prior to that Karlgaard observes that technological progress and wealth creation proceeded at a glacial pace, noting that the vast majority of people lived no better in 1300 A.D. than they did in 1300 B.C. Things speeded up with the Renaissance, followed by the first Industrial Revolution (ie: steam power), which was rapidly in historical terms followed by the second industrial revolution in the late Nineteenth Century which brought the internal combustion engine, electricity and telephony, efficient manufacturing, affordable cars, highway networks, and mass communication and marketing.
However, these developments have caused a lot of collateral damage as its benefits have been spread unevenly, with casualties including poor manual farmhands, employees of companies that sell overpriced products and services in a Cheap Revolution world, and most recently homebuilders brick & mortar booksellers, and autoworkers.
Karlgaard notes that thanks to the Cheap Revolution a company like Apple can now sell you a new iPod, iPhone, iPad and a MacBook, all for less than $2,500, which is, he recalls, precisely what he paid in 1985 for his first Mac, with its small black-and-white screen, 512 kilobytes of memory and no hard disk.
He proposes ten Cheap Revolution rules that help sort present and future winners from losers, and all ten of which, interestingly, are positive to a greater or lesser extent for Apple. You can check it out at:

Firefox 4.0b5 Public Beta Released With Faster Graphics and New Audio Capabilities for the Web
Mozilla's Mike Beltzner says that the latest update to Firefox 4 Beta brings super fast graphics and new audio capabilities to the Web - now leveraging hardware acceleration to improve graphics performance "for Windows users" and also allows, for the first time, the visualization of audio data within the browser.
Beltzner notes that the Firefox 4 Beta introduces a new audio API to expose the raw audio data housed within the video and audio elements in HTML5 to redefine how people experience sound on the Web. With this new API, developers can read and write raw audio data within the browser, presenting audio information in completely new ways that could allow, for example, for people to visually experience a speech or a song through Firefox.
HTTP Strict Transport Security (HSTS) is a new security protocol in Firefox 4 Beta that allows websites to insist that Firefox always use secured connections. Firefox 4 Beta now remembers what sites use the HSTS protocol and will only connect to those sites using SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) in the future, helping to prevent man in the middle attacks.
You can check out Mike Beltzner's blog with links to more detailed info. on these developments here:

New in version 4.0b5:
Firefox 4 Beta 5 is available in 39 languages.

Direct2D Hardware Acceleration is now on by default for Windows 7 users
Firefox button has a new look for Windows Vista and Windows 7 users

Carbon Copy Cloner 3.3.4 Released
There's a new update of your editors favorite backup/drive clone utility available
New in Carbon Copy Cloner version 3.3.4:
- Resolved an issue in which extended attributes were not reapplied to files modified since a previous backup.
- Resolved an issue affecting Leopard users only in which the password specified for encrypting a disk image would not be recognized if the user did not click out of the password text field prior to clicking the Save button.
- Resolved an issue in which the CCC.log file may be unwritable for the currently-logged-in user.
- The text at the bottom of the Scheduler window now properly indicates that disabled scheduled tasks are not scheduled to run at a particular time.
- Added a message to the end of an aborted block-level cloning task that informs the user to reformat the target volume in Disk Utility.
- Improved the wording of some of the "What is going to happen" statements.
- Resolved an issue in which CCC allowed a user to specify a directory as a pre- or post-flight script path (the path to an executable file is expected). This setting would subsequently cause CCC to report an error.
- Resolved an issue in which CCC might hang while "Authenticating" or report an error while trying to run the first task that requires elevated privileges if the ownership of the /Library/PrivilegedHelperTools directory is amiss.
- CCC now properly disallows the scheduling of a task that saves a disk image to the startup disk.
- When using the "Archive deleted and modified items" feature, the timestamped folders are now stored in one folder at the root level of the target volume.
- CCC now generates a warning when absolute paths are entered in the subfolder field of the Advanced Settings panel.
- CCC now properly prevents you from trying to save a disk image in a folder to which you do not have write access.
- Added a check for software updates to the end of the backup task for scheduled tasks.
- Resolved an issue in which the "Data Copied" field would occasionally errantly report a very large number.
- CCC now presents a more informative dialog when a block-level clone is stopped before it is finished. CCC now indicates that the target volume must be reformatted and presents a button that takes you to the Disk Utility application.
- CCC provides better progress indication when converting a sparse disk image to a read-only disk image.
- If the target directory does not exist on a remote Macintosh target, CCC now reports this condition before enumerating files.
- Made several minor changes to the documentation to make it valid against XHTML Strict.
- Adjusted the calculations behind weekly scheduling. Rather than having a week start on Sunday for all locales, the week will now begin on the date specified as the "Start on" date. Tasks scheduled with intervals greater than every week (e.g. every other week, every third week, etc.) will also more reliably determine the first and last days of the interval.
- Scheduled backup tasks that specify a volume that is managed by autofs or automountd will now attempt to trigger those automounts.
- CCC now indicates very clearly whether a Time Machine backup will be transferred.
- Improved error messages associated with input/output errors to offer clear guidance on resolving them.
System requirements:
Mac OS X 10.4.8 or later.

Choices Concerning a Dead MacBook Pro
Extensions' Graham K. Rogers says he began experiencing problems with his 15" MacBook Pro began in late July after four months perfect behaviour. The 'Book began to freeze intermittently, and despite several attempts at repair, and a couple of glimmers of false hope, it finally died on him in the middle of August.
He's considering his options, both for the long term and for the short term, noting that Apple has released a patch for the MacBook Pro to address "a rare issue that may cause the system to freeze," but with no OS, he can't install it and the inability to boot and reinstall OS X suggests that something more serious may be amiss with his machine, also noting that a thread he's been following on the freezing problem has reached some 67 pages.

Floater T3 Vertical Stand For MacBook Pro 15"(UniBody) And MacBook (UniBody)
The Floater T3 stand's side panels are as narrow as possible to ensure perfect stability and the easiest fit. It may look unstable, but it's claimed that the Floater will not move. The reason for this great stability is cited as the precision, to a tenth of a millimeter, used to calculate the right gap between the two panels so Floater and MacBook Pro fit together snugly. The inside of the panels is covered with very thin sheets of silicon that protect the computer without interfering with cooling performance.

And, since every MacBook Pro is unique, the designers have left 2mm room for adjustment where the panels join.
Models are available for the MacBook Pro 15"(UniBody) and MacBook (UniBody)
MacBook Pro 17" (Early 2009 Unibody model~)
MacBook Pro 15" (Late 2008 Unibody model)
MacBook 13" (Late 2008 Unibody model)

USB Phone World is an online retailer of laptop batteries, laptop AC adapters, and other mobile technology accessories. Their products are suited for all major brands including Dell, HP, IBM, Sony, Toshiba, and others. Established in 2006, USB Phone World has rapidly grown as leader for sales in this field, offering customers the most competitive prices on their products, all backed with superior service.
Both "5-Star" and "Trusted Seller" honors from NexTag are extremely difficult to attain, going only to retailers that consistently provide the best products and services to their customers in comparison to competing retailers advertising on the site.
USB Phone World strives for 100% customer satisfaction with a 30-day money-back guarantee on every product. Customer services issues, when they arise at all, are solved in a timely manner and always in the customer's favor. Eligible sellers must be listed on the site for at least six months, get positive reviews from customers, provide accurate information on products and services, accurately represent their product's condition, honor their own prices and policies, and promptly resolve all customer issues.
"5-Star" status is purely a measure of customer experience on the site, averaging individual customer ratings. This star rating shows, at a glance, that those who have purchased from the seller have had overwhelmingly satisfying experiences dealing with them, at least among customers who have taken the time to leave a review.
These two metrics allow NexTag visitors to shop not only based on price, but on the quality of the products and services provided.
USB Phone World's best-selling products include laptop batteries for Apple, Dell and others, AC adapter for Dell, laptop battery for HP, AC adapter for HP, Compaq laptop battery, Compaq laptop power cord, laptop batter for Sony, Sony AC adapter, and Sony power cord.

Narcissists, Insecure People Disproportionately Populate Facebook: Study
The Canadian Press reports that a new study of students at Toronto's York University suggests Facebook is a magnet for narcissists and people with low self-esteem, and that people who fall into these categories use Facebook as a means of self-promotion.
The study defined narcissism as a pervasive pattern of grandiosity, need for admiration, and an exaggerated sense of self-importance, and self-esteem as a person's overall self-evaluation or their worth. Another interesting finding was that while women participants were more likely to self-promote "through a carefully selected main photo that might offer a flashy, doctored or revealing image of their physical appearance," males surveyed were more inclined to promote themselves though written postings describing themselves in the "About Me" or "Notes" sections, but a remaining conundrum is whether narcissists are more likely to use Facebook, or is it that Facebook users are more likely to become narcissists.
