Apple Will Lean Again on Display Technology for Innovation in 2014 - Analyst

DisplaySearch market analyst David Hsieh blogs thatApple has in recent years been an early adaptor of display technology and has participated as a critical part of the supply chain, rather than passively relying on display and materials makers to develop the most advanced displays. He observes that it's clear from its products that Apple is a strong believer in high resolution, wide color gamut and wide viewing angle displays.

However, Hsieh notes that rapid developments in technology and manufacturing of LCD and OLED displays have challenged Apple's leadership in display adoption, rendering it unable to offer unique features in its displays as a long-term differentiator. He notes that introduction of the iPhone 5S and 5C is the latest example of Apple being slow to adopt the latest display technologies.

However, Hsieh says that based on supply chain research, DisplaySearch believes Apple is planning to revamp nearly all of the displays in its products over the next year. This would indicate that Apple, once again, intends to count on display technology for new product innovation.
