BLIPPEX - "The First Interesting Search Engine Since Google"
Quartz's Christopher Mims notes thet Microsoft has spent enormous resources trying to convince people that Bings search results are just as good as Googles, and has has won some market share, but not at Googles expense.
However, the new BLIPPEX search engine (https://www.blippex.org/) by Berlin-based Austrians Max Kossatz. and Gerald Baeck, two Austrians living in Berlin, takes an innovative approach: Blippex is being built by its own users.

500 Million PCs Still Running Windows XP With Just Six Months Of Support Left
The Register's Gavin Clarke notes that six months from now, on 8 April 2014, Microsoft will stop pushing out security updates for Windows XP and that's going to be a big deal, beaing as at the time of writing, a whopping one-third of the worlds millions of PCs were still running Microsofts 13-year-old client operating system.
To put that in a Mac context, the OS that Apple was shipping 13 years ago in 2000 was Mac OS 9, and OS X was still in beta.
Clarke cites Gartner metrics that the global installed base of PCs at the end of 2013 will be 1.63 billion units and Windows XP is currently installed on at least 500 million computers and almost certainly used by over a billion users, and that reportedly least 10 major UK and US organisations with more than 5,000 seats that are currently mid-migration will miss next Aprils deadline.
Clarke notes that the reason such large numbers of users are still clinging to XP vaty, but quite a few are simply living in denial, with a stunning one in seven claiming to have no idea of the approaching end-of-support date. Some plan to replace XP with something new such as Windows 7 only when they buy new computers, and others are simply flummoxed by the scale and complexity of a move to a more modern OS. He observes that those who've clung to Windows XP have made larger problems for themselves, since now moving is no longer just a simple software upgrade - the gap in hardware needed for Windows 7 or Windows 8 being so broad that it requires a massive spend on new PCs, and an even bigger problem will be obsolete applications.
