Seagate Soups Up Laptop Performance With Second-Generation Solid State/HDD Hybrid Drive

Seagate is now shipping the second generation of Momentus XT, its solid state/HDD hybrid drive for laptop computers and the company's fastest drive ever for personal computers. With a simple drive upgrade, users can boost boot-up speed and overall performance to hotrod their laptop computer. The company says seven original equipment manufacturers are gearing up to ship laptops powered by the Momentus XT drive, which is also now available to consumers at online retailers Amazon, Canada Computers, CDW, Memory Express, NCIX, Newegg, and TigerDirect.

Powering the Momentus XT drive are Seagate's proprietary Adaptive Memory and FAST Factor technologies. Adaptive Memory technology works by identifying data usage patterns, then moving the most frequently retrieved information to solid state memory for faster access. Adaptive Memory effectively tailors hard drive performance to each user and the applications they use. FAST Factor technology blends the strengths of SSDs and hard disk drives for faster access to applications, quicker bootup and higher overall system speed.

"Laptop users want faster access to all of their content, from gaming, music and video to spreadsheets and documents, creating strong demand for the highest performance," says Seagate vice president of Worldwide Marketing Scott Horn. "Seagate is excited to answer this need with a second-generation Momentus XT drive that delivers solid state drive (SSD) speed, greater storage capacity and easy installation at an affordable price."

"High-speed storage devices make a difference when it comes to improving overall PC performance, comments John Rydning, research vice president at IDC. Seagate's newest Momentus XT drive gives notebook PC users an economical option for boosting PC performance while at the same time providing spacious storage capacity all in one device."

The Momentus XT drive is claimed to be nearly 70 percent faster than the prior Momentus drive version, and up to three times faster than a traditional hard disk drive while providing 750GB of storage capacity. The Momentus XT hard drive's Serial ATA 6Gb/second interface and 8 gigabytes of Single Level Cell NAND flash double the interface and NAND read-write speed of the previous generation. The all-in-one design of Momentus XT drive makes installation and upgrading simple and easy for any laptop or desktop computer with a drive bay in which it will fit, and with any operating system.

Tuning Momentus XT for Optimal Performance

The hard drive industry is transitioning from the current 512-byte sector standard to a newer Advanced Format 4K (4096-byte) sector size that helps maintain data integrity at higher storage densities and capacities. Momentus XT takes advantage of this newer Advanced Format 4K standard and is already tuned for optimal performance on the latest PC operating systems.

Momentus XT customers can easily optimize Momentus XT to work with Windows XP and older versions of Microsoft Windows with a few simple steps. Visit this page on the Seagate web site to determine if Momentus XT is already tuned for your operating system version and how to do so if needed:

Ultrabook Prices May Fall 5-10% In Q1/12 - PC Vendors

Digitimes' Monica Chen and Adam Hwang report that PC laptop makers Acer, Asustek Computer and Toshiba are expected to lower retail prices for ultrabooks to below US$1,000 by year end 2011, and with a $100 marketing subsidy per machine coming from Intel, prices could drop an additional drop 5-10% in the first quarterof 2012, according to Digitimes' unnamed sources in the Taiwan-based OEM supply chain.

The report also notes that Lenovo, Hewlett-Packard, Toshiba and Dell were launch ultrabooks starting "mid-November," according to the insider moles (curious, since the story is dated today, the last of November, and Toshiba was also named earlier in the item).

Whatever, the point is that Intel is hoping to keep retail prices below $1,000, with high costs for processors and SSDs making that target difficult, with the BOM (bill-of-materials) cost of making a 13-inch, SSD-equipped unit estimated at about $690, OEM costs another $100, and marketing/distribution costs of$150, for a cumulative total of US$940 based on insider intelligence, with key components like the CPU, a 128GB SSD and display screen OEM cost being c.$175-200, c.$140-150 and and c.$45-50, respectively.

Apple, with supplies of SSDs, panels, (and perhaps even Intel CPUs?) contractually locked-in at favorable rates is well-positioned to hold the MacBook Air entry level (just) below $1,000, while the PC makers are presumably being obliged to scramble for whatever SSD volumes are available in the face of an ongoing hard disk drive shortage caused by flooding in Thailand disrupting production.

Tackling Macs That Randomly Wake From Sleep

This one hits close to home for your editor, whose late 2008 unibody MacBook goes through spells of waking up from sleep unbidden, and consequently sometimes running for hours unattended until its powered-up state is noticed.

MacFixIt's Topher Kessler observes that the system should stay in sleep unless specifically commanded to wake, but as I've discovered, there are times when the system may randomly wake from sleep which can be frustrating because it wastes power, especially with laptops running on battery power, and of course adds to the wear factor, but Kessler also notes that it can raise concerns as to whether one's system is being accessed for nefarious purposes.

Kessler addresses several reasons why a Mac may spontaneously wake up spontaneously including issues with connected peripheral devices, especially anything USB or BlueTooth, IR services on older Mac laptops or with Front Row support on more recent machines, and a simple-to-cure one being activation of the wake on network access feature (or wake on ring in older, modem-supporting models), or scheduled wake time in the Energy Saver panel of the Systam Preferences.

A provisional workaround contra battery draining and wear from unwanted wake-ups is to set the system to sleep after a short period of inactivity in the Energy Saver system preferences.

Death of a PowerBook: Time to Go Intel?

Low End Mac's John Hatchett reports that his 12" PowerBook G4 may be down for the count, with its power adapter plug having broken off inside the machine's external DC socket. John bought a new power adapter and took apart the PowerBook, and managed to fish out the broken piece of the power adapter tip, but when he buttoned things up and tried to boot the old PowerBook, nothing happened.

Noting that a 12" PowerBook teardown is "a three ice cube tray job" (John sorts the parts out in ice cube trays as he disassembles the computer) he's wondering if it's finally time to throw in the towel and upgrade to an Intel Mac.

Probably not a new one, because John notes that he has misgivings about Lion, and als a stubborn unwillingness to give up AppleWorks. He's also underwhelmed by touch interface features on a Mac and doesn't like change.

Pioneering Mac OS Iconographer Susan Kare Launches New Book: Susan Kare: ICONS

Susan Kare, the noted Silicon Valley interface designer who created the original screen icons for the Mac OS has launched a new book, Susan Kare: ICONS, featuring 80 of her most popular icons created between 1983-2011. The book comprises a collection of original Apple icons including: the Bomb, Watch cursor, Smiling Macintosh, and Moof the Dogcow, and the 1983 and 2011 portrait icons of Steve Jobs, among others.

Kare is the designer of many icons, typefaces and graphics that have been seen daily by millions since the early 1980s from the command symbol on the Apple keyboard to over 1000 Facebook virtual gifts along with design work for companies such as PayPal, Glam Media, Microsoft, and Fossil.

"In 1984, one of the Macintosh team's most auspicious early hires was artist Susan Kare who created the engaging original icons for the Mac," says Steve Silberman, a contributing editor at Wired magazine who wrote the foreword to Kares ICON book. "The gestures and metaphors of icon-driven computing seem so natural and effortless to us now that it seems strange to recall navigating in the digital world any other way. Susan's work has had long-lasting influence, and this book is long overdue."

Susan Kare: ICONS is a 160-page, 7x7 inch soft-cover art book featuring the Smiling Macintosh on its cover. Each book is priced at $39.95, and signed by the artist. ICONS provides a curated look at 80 of Kare's favorite icons created between 1983 and 2011. A magnified view allows the reader to see how the icons were crafted, pixel-by-pixel, with notes by the artist accompanying selected images. The book also displays the icons at their familiar sizes, and features an introductory essay by Steve Silberman, "Signposts in New Space". Susan Kare: ICONS is sold exclusively online at:
http://www.kareprints.com

Designers, Mac fans, and computer nerds may want to purchase some of her most memorable icon prints (or be delighted to receive them as gifts). From a mere handful of pixels, Kare created visual metaphors for computer commands that have become part of the visual language of computing, familiar to almost everyone who looks at a screen.

All of the gicle prints (fine art prints created on an ink-jet printer) are made using archival pigment inks and 100% cotton rag paper. The prints range in size from 8.5 x 11 inches to 30 x 40 inches, and commissioned, custom images are available upon request. There is a limited run of each print size, and each is inspected, signed and numbered personally by Susan Kare. Icons offered cover a wide range of her work from the classic computer user interface elements and familiar digital Solitaire cards, to a variety of iconic images from Facebook virtual gifts such as a love letter, disco ball, and a coffee cup titled "Caffeine from a series of bad habits images for the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

Susan Kare User Interface Graphics is a digital design practice in San Francisco, California. Her high school friend, Andy Hertzfeld, recruited Susan Kare to Apple, Inc. in the early 1980s. She originally worked in the Macintosh software group to design user interface graphics and fonts; her business cards read "Macintosh Artist." Following her time at Apple, Kare joined Steve Jobs at NeXT Computer as the Creative Director, and hired her design hero, Paul Rand, to create the NeXT logo.

According to the Museum of Modern Art in New York, Susan Kare is a pioneering and influential computer iconographer. Since 1983, Kare has designed thousands of icons for the worlds leading technology companies. Utilizing a minimalist grid of pixels and constructed with mosaic-like precision, her icons communicate their function immediately and memorably, with wit and style.

Kare graduated from Mount Holyoke College and received MA and Ph.D. degrees from New York University. An avid surfer and skier, she lives in Northern California with her three sons, and two Australian Shepherds.

Find Any File Index-less Find File Utility

Find Any File Is A Program For Mac Os X That Lets You Search For Files On Your Disks.

Unlike Spotlight, it does not use a database but instead uses the file system driver's fast search operations, where available. This lets you search for file properties such as name, dates, size, etc., but not for file content (use Spotlight or EasyFind for that).

Find Any File can find files that Spotlight doesn't, e.g. those inside bundles and packages and in inside folders that are usually excluded from Spotlight search.
Finally, it is quite fast. A search only takes a few seconds.

Find Any File doesn't replace Spotlight, but it complements it greatly:
If you search for content, such as in e-Mails, PDFs, Word docs etc., use Spotlight.

If you search for files by name, size or date, use FAF, as only then you can be sure that everything is found.

Features

Find Any File has a few gems that other search tools don't offer. It sports a new hierarchical view for the found items. You can switch to it using Command-2 or click on the right little icon at the top of the results window. With this hierarchical view you can directly look for the results in the folders that interest you.

image

Additionally, there's a yellow so-called Tooltip box which can show you more details of the item the mouse is over. You can turn this box on/off via the menu bar.

If you still prefer the flat list view, you can filter the shown items by their name, kind, enclosing folder etc, to further limit the results of your search.

You can save your entered searches to files (they'll have the extension ".faf"). You can then double click them in the Finder to have them start the search immediately, or use the saved search as a preset.

If you hold the Option key (alt) down in the Find window, the Find button turns into Find All. If you click on it then, you are asked for an administrator password - and then Find Any File will restart with root permissions, being able to find really any file on your Mac's volumes (something that Spotlight won't ever do). Note that this will only work on local disks, not on network mounts, though. And it's only available in the app version from the developer's website, although note well: not in the version from the Mac App Store due to restrictions Apple enforces there.

image

Have you just installed or launched a program for the first time and like to see what it modified or added to your disks? There's a way to do that.

Searching for files only inside your Music folder that are neither in AAC nor in MP3 format and which are at least a megabyte in size? So you could enter two Name criteria as follows, along with a minimum size. Also note that the search is limited explicitly to the Music folder.

Or you might want to find all Numbers documents created in 2009 only.

More features

Besides the obvious things you can see by looking at the menus, there are a few things that are not so obvious:

Searching multiple disks or folders
To search a custom set of disks or folders, simply drop them together onto the popup menu which lets you select where to search. If you can't drag all the icons at once, you may also add them to an existing set by holding down the Shift key when dropping them onto the popup menu.

Filtering the results
Use the filter in the flat (non-hierarchical) list to reduce the shown items to the text you enter. Use the menu under the magnifier glass to choose what column to filter on.

Choosing which columns to show in the list
Right-click on the column titles to get a menu that lets you choose which columns appear in the list.

Pre-setting the preferred disk to search
When Find Any File is launched, it always defaults to searching the boot volume. If you prefer to search a different volume by default, do this: Launch Find Any File, choose your preferred volume, then use the Save command to save the search criteria to a file. Next time, instead of launching Find Any File directly, open that saved file instead - Find Any File will launch with the presets you chose before. Alternatively (since version 1.5), you can set up your preferred search and choose Save As Defaults from the File menu in order to have these settings reappear next time you launch Find Any File. (Note: If you have saved a Search with the option to start the search automatically when opening the file, you can still prevent the search from starting by holding down the Option (alt) key while Find Any File opens the document.)

Copying the path name of a found item
To copy a path name of a found item to the clipboard, right-click on the path field at the very bottom, where you can then choose from 3 different formats:
• Shell style is good for pasting into a Terminal window,
• POSIX style is the original unix-style path and
• Mac style gives the classic Mac path using ":" as delimiters

Changes since version 1.6.1:

New Features
• Specify multiple disks or folders for a single search.
• Filter results (only in flat view, not in tree view).
• More columns in results list (creation date, folder name, path, label).
• Shows Finder labels by color, similar to the Finder.
• Can search the current Finder selection.

Improvements
• Showing a large amount (several 1000s) of found items is much faster now.
• Find window is more responsive during search of entire disks and on network volumes.

Bug fixes
• No more crash when copying paths with more than one selected item.
• Searching only on local or remote volumes works again as expected.
• Searching for Aliases fixed.
• Hotkey fixes: Loads saved defaults even if option key was part the hotkey presses; Works again on OSX Tiger

Key Features
• Quite fast
• Convenient folder view for results
• Can search as root user
• Saveable queries
• Can be launched in place of Spotlight with F

Requirements
• Mac OS X 10.4.1 or later (Tiger, Leopard, Snow Leopard)

Centrify Delivers Centralizing Control For Management Of Mac User Populations In The Enterprise

Centrify Corporation, a provider of security and compliance solutions that centrally control, secure and audit access to cross-platform systems and applications using Active Directory, has announced the availability of a major new release of Centrify DirectControl for Mac OS X. Centrify DirectControl for Mac OS X is Centrify's leading solution for Active Directory-based authentication, single sign-on, smartcard and group policy support for the Apple Mac platform. It offers the most advanced set of capabilities for integrating and managing Mac systems with existing enterprise infrastructure to reduce costs and improve security.

Already available for other platforms such as UNIX, DirectControl is an integrated component of Centrify Suite 2012, the latest release of Centrify's security and compliance solution for controlling, securing and auditing access to cross-platform systems and applications using Active Directory. Newly added features in DirectControl for Mac OS X include support for automated digital certificate enrollment, additional smart card support specific to the U.S. Federal government market, enhanced Apple FileVault Full Disk encryption support, advanced printer management, and additional desktop lockdown capabilities.

"By choice or by employee demand, organizations today are increasingly being required to support the Mac platform as yet another desktop or laptop within their IT environment," says Frank Cabri, Centrify VP of Marketing. "Centrify was the first vendor to deliver Group Policy support for the Mac, and now with this major update to our DirectControl for Mac OS X solution organizations will find it even easier to leverage Active Directory for centralized administration and management of their growing Mac populations."

New capabilities of DirectControl for Mac OS X include:

• Support for automated digital certificate enrollment to facilitate wireless and network access in enterprise environments. DirectControl now automatically determines if Windows Group Policy requires a machine certificate to be present. If so, the Mac automatically requests, downloads and installs a machine certificate, making it available for services such as 802.1x and VPN. When the certificates expire, DirectControl automatically renews and updates the certificate.

• Enhanced smart card support for Apple Mac OS X versions 10.7 and 10.6 for the CAC, CACNG, and PIV smart cards, including the Oberthur ID One 128 v 5.5 Dual Smart Card. This enables government agencies to support smart card authentication on their Mac systems that use Apple's 10.7 "Lion" operating system.

• Enhanced OCSP (Online Certificate Status Protocol) support. Customers now have a simpler OCSP GUI interface that enables custom configuration of the certificate validation process.

• Compatibility with Apple's FileVault 2 Full Disk Encryption. FileVault 2 Full Disk Encryption allows customers to secure their Macs in the event of loss or theft by making the disk unreadable to anyone without proper credentials. Now Active Directory credentials can be used to unlock an encrypted disk.
Improved printer management support on the Mac. Customers now have the ability to assign users to printer groups on the local Mac. This allows users to stop and restart the print queue and create their own printer definition files if required.

• Support for restricting user logon access. Using Centrify's patented Zones technology, Macs can be configured to allow only certain users or groups to log on. This can be used to define certain Macs as "Executive Access," where only a single employee can log on. It is also ideal for implementing departmental level Mac solutions where only members of a given department can log in.

DirectControl for Mac OS X, part of the Centrify Suite solution, is available today from Centrify and authorized partners worldwide.

Pricing for DirectControl for Mac OS X starts at $65 per workstation.

The Centrify Suite lets organizations centrally control, secure and audit access to cross-platform systems and applications by leveraging an infrastructure they already own Microsoft Active Directory. Built on an integrated architecture, the Centrify Suite strengthens security, enhances regulatory compliance initiatives, and reduces IT expense and complexity. The Centrify Suite consisting of DirectControl, DirectAuthorize, DirectAudit, DirectSecure and DirectManage delivers secure authentication and single sign-on, role-based access control, privileged identity management, user-level auditing, server isolation, and encryption of data-in-motion for the industry's broadest set of heterogeneous systems and applications.

Apple-Only Press Release Service, prMac, Boosts Revenues 89% Over 2010

Dallas based prMac, a press release service specializing in news of products and services for Apple computers and mobile devices, today announces revenues up 89% over this time last year. Celebrating their fifth anniversary next month, prMac offers a wide variety of affordable services, including: Extended Distribution of Press Releases to over 674 media partners, Press Release Writing, Video News Releases, Bulk Distribution Packages, RSS Feeds, Free Limited Releases, and Display Advertising Bundles. The company has built a loyal following among the tightly knit community of iOS and OS X developers, and has more than 7,000 registered members.

"prMac's services are completely bad ass. Far superior and cheaper than other alternatives out there. The customer service itself is also very impressive, I e-mailed them in the middle of the night and had a response within minutes. As matter of fact our e-mail exchange felt more like an Instant Messaging conversation with how fast they kept responding. You can't beat service like that! If you're looking for an excellent press release system with awesome customer service, look no further - prMac gets the job done, and does it well," says Roger O'Brien of Mach Software Design.

Following free registration on the prMac website, the member can submit their Press Release for automatic, worldwide distribution through the service. The website provides simple, step-by-step instructions for writing a properly formatted Press Release. The company also offers a professional Press Release Writing Service, especially helpful for members doing a release for the first time. The Writing Service also caters to the many members who are not native English speakers. Its newest service, Video News Releases, was successfully introduced seven months ago. The service provides a short, professional video that complements the content of the member's written Press Release, and the Press Release and VNR are published together.

prMac's outstanding revenue growth in a weak economy is attributed to several factors. First, the company maintains a very aggressive pricing policy, and it would be difficult to find comparable services offered at a lower cost anywhere in the world. Second, prMac is known in the industry, by developers and media alike, for its commitment to the highest standards of objective and ethical journalism. Third, the service is proactive in meeting the needs of its members, constantly expanding and improving on its Customer Service, Web-Based Member Services, Writing and Video Services, and number of Media Partners. Lastly, the Apple-Only Press Release Service remains true to its roots, a service created by a developer for developers, serving their needs and helping them achieve their business goals.
