CreativeMac Reviews 3.06 GHz 17-inch MacBook Pro

CreativeMac's Heath McKnight says Apple's flagship MacBook Pro does not disappoint. McKnight recently had a chance to review the latest, top-of-the-line unibody MacBook Pro from Apple; with a 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 8GB of RAM, a 500GB hard drive, and many other great features, and observes that this is the fastest Apple laptop he's ever used.

Apple MacBook Late 2009 Review - The MacBook That Thinks It's A Pro

T3's Ian Osborne says:

Let's get one thing straight from the off. When will Apple make up its mind about FireWire? Originally supported across the entire Mac range, when it was dropped from the 13-inch aluminium unibody MacBook in late 2008.... The next revision of Apple's laptop range saw the aluminium MacBook join the Pro range, and much to the relief of the Apple faithful, FireWire was restored. Yet now, with the release of this new entry-level white polycarbonate 13-inch MacBook, the FireWire port has disappeared again.

Thankfully, most of the new MacBook's revisions are far more welcome than its dropping FireWire support. Several popular features introduced for the MacBook Pro range are now finding their way onto Apple's entry-level laptop....

Will Apple Continue To Dominate The Consumer Electronics Market?

EETimes says:

Two EE Times' editors recently sat down for dinner and ended up in a spirited debate over whether Apple can continue to dominate the consumer electronics market.
For EE Times' editor-in-chief Junko Yoshida, who has held the consumer beat at this publication for long time, the state of the consumer electronics industry, especially its future, is deeply troubling.

Business editor Bolaji Ojo, who whiles away the day exhuming - and making sense of - the facts and figures buried in financial statements, is now ready to take on Apple, questioning the company's dominance in the future.

The two editors' debate, over a bowl of hot chili, got only hotter as the night wore on. And it never really ended. Here then, for public consumption as a two-part series, is a reprise of that friendly dispute: "Is CE going the Apple way? The case for Apple" by Yoshida; and "Is Apple unstoppable? The case against Apple" by Ojo.

Is Apple Unstoppable? The Case Against Apple

EE Times' Bolaji Ojo says:

Apple Inc. is not unstoppable. In fact, the momentum is building for halting the company's dominance of the consumer electronics market and eventually, rivals will in the near future chip away at its leadership until no single player ever gets again to rule the sector.

Yes, Apple is the wunderkind of the high-tech world, the one whose enchanted hand turns everything it touches into hot sales and even bigger profits generator. Even a Golden King can have feet of clay, though, and Apple is no exception as its history has shown.....

To all who believe Apple is infallible, I offer five factors that the company could ignore at a high future cost

Is CE Going The Apple Way? The Case For Apple

EE Times' Junko Yoshida says:

Apple is already a great consumer electronics company. It's hard to argue against it.

But the $64 million question is whether Apple has also secured its position as a leader of the consumer market in the future.

You bet.

The smart money is on Apple, not because of Apple's specific future products, but because of Apple's current business model, and its meticulous, disciplined record of execution.

Time Inc.'s Squires Assembles Team of Rivals to Harness Digital Media

John Koblin reports:

Some of the magazine industry's biggest names are on the verge of forming a new company that would allow them to take the digital future into their own hands.

The company would make up one of the biggest alliances among rival publishers ever formed in print media, with Time Inc., Condé Nast and Hearst all expected to join, houses that together publish more than 50 magazines....

The company will prepare magazines that can work across multiple digital platforms, whether the iPhone, the BlackBerry or countless other digital devices....

Sony VAIO X gets OS X Snow Leopard

SlashGear's Chris Davies says:

There's a lot to like about Sony's VAIO X ultraportable – its indecently-skinny build, the engineering intelligence that went into its design, and its lengthy battery life just to name a few things – but if you're less than inspired by Windows 7 then how about a Mac OS X version? That's not one of Sony's official options, but insanelymac forum member Asama took it upon himself to throw OS X Snow Leopard onto the VAIO X himself..... Certainly not the cheapest Hackint0sh we've seen, but perhaps the most handsome.

Apple Beats Google In Leadership Survey

9Yo5 Mac's Jonny Evans reports:

Apple has beaten previous leader Google into second place in this year's Thought Leadership Index.

The Index is based on a poll of 1,000 CEOs and other business leaders in the UK. The poll was conducted by Populus. Participants were asked to identify those organisations which they believed successfully introduced new thinking, products and business models, and also delivered on the "promise" of their brand.

S-video Connection Problems For MacBooks

MacFixIt's Topher Kessler reports:

A number of MacBook owners who use Apple's S-video adaptor have been experiencing problems with S-video output after updating to Snow Leopard. In some cases the output will be low resolution, and in other situations it will only output monochrome colors. For others, the output is also unstable, and seems grainy or scratched and distorted.

These problems could be from a variety of reasons, including physical connection issues, overlooked settings, and driver incompatibilities that could be causing them.

Mini VGA to S-video Adapter a No Go for eMacs

Low End Mac's Dan Bashur says:

I recently ordered a gently used Mini VGA to S-video/composite video adapter (Apple Video Adapter M8734G/A*) for about $5 from eBay for use with my 1.42 GHz eMac G4. I must say that I was very much disappointed.

I wanted to see if it would be worth trying an S-video connection to my old 1080i CRT HDTV. It wasn't worth it, and I wouldn't recommend this for users considering integrating an eMac (or other device equipped with S-video) to a TV.

The main problem is that the refresh rates (in any supported resolution) of the eMac do not match up with the 60 Hz refresh rate of all standard definition and most high definition TVs. The other problem is the lack of progressive resolution selections - only interlaced resolutions are selectable.
