Why You Should Use Mountain Lion's Spaces
Macworld's Kirk McElhearn is preaching to the converted in your editor. I've loved and used intensively OS X's Spaces feature since it was introduced in Version 10.5 Leopard, usually having nine Spaces configured, and often something underway in most or all of them..
McElhearn notes that an efficiency-killer and time-waster is having to root through through the many windows of multiple applications to find just the right one [although I'll take that any day to having to switch applications like you do in the iOS - Ed.]. However, he notes that Mountain Lion's Spaces can make your work more efficient and productive. Now a part of Mission Control, with Spaces, you can organize your apps and windows so that theyre all visible on separate desktops, instead of all on the same desktop. When you want to view a specific app, you can switch to that app, or to its space, and see it without obstructions. And, using Mission Control, you can get a birds eye view of all your spaces, and all your windows.
Sweet!

Haven't Got Windows 8 Yet? Here Comes Windows 9
TGDaily's Nick Farrell reports that the word on the street is that Windows 9 which will hit the streets in November, 2014, although he observes that it's not crystal clear why anyone would feel the need to upgrade to Windows 9 before Windows 8 takes off, with many users are in the same boat as him deciding that Windows 7 is good enough, while others even think that a line should be drawn at Windows XP.
The Windows 9 timeline rumor originates Win8China, which Ferrell says has provided several good Windows leaks in the past.

Why Free Works And Proprietary Monocultures Don't
Blogger and software developer Marco Arment notes that Google Reader's upcoming shutdown and Mailbox's rapid acquisition have reignited the discussion of free vs. paid services and whether people should pay for products they love to keep them running sustainably.
However, Arment says users aren't the problem, observing that when a free option is available in a market of paid alternatives, far more people will [sensibly - Ed] choose the free product, often by an order of magnitude or more, and noting that asking people to pay unnecessarily is asking them to behave irrationally and against their own immediate best interests, even if its probably worse long-term.
And when the free product is better in some ways, which as Arment notes is often the case when a tech giant or well-funded startup enters a market previously occupied only by small and sustainable businesses, the others don't stand a chance, observing that free is so prevalent in the IT industry not because everyone's irresponsible, but because it works, and if you try to play by traditional rules and regulations, you run the risk of getting steamrolled by someone whos perfectly willing to ignore them. The best thing we can do, says Arment, isn't necessarily to try to pay for everything, which is unrealistic and often not an option, but rather to avoid supporting and using proprietary monocultures.
Listening, Apple? - Ed.

Google Introduces Chromebook To Canada
The Canadian Press reports that Google officially introduced its Chromebook laptops in Canada on Tuesday, to start start at about $250 for users who spend most of their time on a computer using the Internet, and therefore don't need the processing power to run full-blown software applications.
The article cites Google product management director Caesar Sengupta observing that "The whole idea is basically to have a computing experience that's extremely simple, that's very stable, very secure, and sort of just gets out of your way," adding that "For many people they won't move completely (to the Chromebook concept) but it's a fantastic second computer...."

Air Display App Turns Your Tablet Or Smartphone Into A Second Screen
Ever wonder what multiple screens could do to enhance your productivity and ability to deliver on time?
Imagine: your creative team is under the wire to finalize a new campaign; the presentation includes photography, video and (undoubtedly) world-class design concepts. Time is scarce and all elements need to be wrapped by an unrealistic deadline. "Creatives" now have a secret weapon: Avatron Software's Air Display, a critically acclaimed mobile productivity app for teams needing additional screen real estate to enhance productivity.
With Air Display, you can put your tablet or smartphone to work. Use your computer screen for Photoshop, and your tablet for your tools. Or use your smartphone on your video shoot to correct color while viewing your shots on another display.
Air Display allows an additional screen - on a Mac, iPad, iPhone, iPod touch, Android smartphone, or tablet or even an old PC - to become a fully-functional additional monitor so you can spread out your tools instantly and wirelessly. Your new iPad or your old PC can become a "second screen" for designing, writing, coding or calculating - saving you time from scrolling or moving windows around on a single screen. Organization goes up, desktop clutter goes down and productivity wins the day.
Regardless of how it's used, Air Display - like all Avatron productivity apps - blurs the boundaries between personal computers, mobile devices and the cloud:
(*) Business: Move all of your Photoshop or InDesign tool palettes onto the extra screen, and let your document fill the main screen
(*) Music: Use your extra PC as the ultimate control surface for Logic or Pro Tools with always-on access. Or dominate that new Pandora channel with "thumbs down" when the tune doesn't fit the mood
(*) Photography: Hold a live feed on one screen; adjust lighting with the other
(*) Placeholder for Essential Apps: Fill your second display with critical apps like Outlook, Mail, social networks, and more, so you don't miss a beat while you're working
