IT Pros: Macs Cost Less To Manage Than PCs

TUAW's Chris Rawson reports:

The Enterprise Desktop Alliance (an association of several Mac-centric IT vendors) recently surveyed 260 IT administrators in the US to find out which computing environment is cheaper to manage: PCs or Macs. It turns out Macs cost less to manage than PCs for 65% of the IT admins surveyed. 19% of survey respondents said the two platforms cost the same to manage, while 16% said PCs cost less to manage than Macs.

According to the survey, Macs were cheaper to troubleshoot and required fewer help desk calls; system configuration, user training, and servers/networks/printing were all cheaper for a Mac environment than a PC environment.....

Apple's Mac Mini Server 'Ideal' For The Small Office

Computerworld's Ryan Faas says:

When Apple announced the server edition of its popular Mac mini late in October, I was excited that the company was finally offering a low-cost small-business server at a terrific price point ($999) for both the hardware and an unlimited license of Mac OS X Snow Leopard Server.....

For small businesses with limited - or, in some cases, no - IT staff, having a flexible and robust server platform is important. So is easy setup, management and backup. I've talked previously about the two most recent iterations of Mac OS X Server (Leopard Server and Snow Leopard Server), which offer simplified management through an administration tool - Server Preferences - as well as Mac OS X Server's more robust GUI management utilities and various command-line tools.

Make Exact Backup Copies Of Your DVDs

Macworld's Jonathan Seff says:

Picture this scenario: you go to retrieve your DVD copy of Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory from its protective case because your son or daughter wants to watch it for the 437th time. You remove the DVD only to find it scratched and just a little bit sticky from the jam-covered fingers that last handled it. Sound familiar?

In the past, we've talked about using an application such as HandBrake 0.9.4 () to rip your DVDs to watch on an iPhone or Apple TV, and covered some of the frequently asked questions about DVD ripping. But what if you want to make an exact copy of a physical DVD to use as your 'viewing' disc and keep the original safely on the shelf? Or how about if you've received (or created) a DVD of home movies or a wedding and want to duplicate it for family members. Here's what you need to know.

Why I Plan to Stop Using Google Docs

Low End Mac's Jason Walsh says:

....I am searching for the perfect writing tool. Much as I prefer to write with a good pen, I want to find writing software that is ideally suited not only to my needs but also my temperament and taste.

Frankly, it's a tall order.

The clock is ticking. My trial copy of Apple's Pages runs out in just a few days....

In the past week I have written two news stories, two feature stories, five analysis pieces, and an essay. All of them were written using the dreaded Google Docs.

This article was written in Ommwriter.

Why dreaded, you ask? What, exactly, is wrong with Google Docs?....

Google, says Jason.

Get Mac-Like Scrolling and Gestures on a Windows Laptop

Lifehacker says:

Once you've used the hand-helping, time-saving, two-finger scrolling and three-finger gestures on a MacBook, a standard Windows trackpad can feel kind of, well, dead. Here's how to get total finger control with a tiny app, or go further with a driver swap.

Let's put this out there right away: This won't give you the Mac's pinch-to-zoom or rotation powers, but it will give you nearly everything else......

The Tech Night Owl: Will the 2015 Mac be a Mac?

Unlike many tech companies, Apple has a long-range vision. Maybe you didn't see how the iPod would develop, the ongoing improvements in the iPhone or the path from Mac OS X 10.0 to 10.6, but there's little doubt Apple had broad concepts about the direction of these products from Day One.
