Time Capsule Hands-on

Gizmodo reports:

Apple's Time Capsule backup server is a great idea, and looks great as well. It's the same size as the Airport Extreme, but seems heavier. It has the exact same ports as the Airport Extreme (four Gigabit Ethernet ports, normal power ports) and has 802.11n. The top is different and has a chrome reflective Apple logo....

CPU CRUNCH: Mac Pro 3.2GHz 'Harpertown' versus 3.0GHz 'Clovertown'

BareFeats' rob-ART morgan says:

We just received our new 8-core Mac Pro 3.2GHz "Harpertwon" yesterday. In this first article, we compare it to the previous "best" 8-core Mac Pro 3.0GHz "Clovertown."...

This initial CPU crunch test pits the "Apr 2007" 8-core 3GHz "Clovertown" Mac Pro against the "Jan 2008" 8-core 3.2GHz "Harpertown" Mac Pro. Though the core frequency gain of the "Harpertown" is only 6.7%, the speed advantage in the tests ranged from 12% to 24%. That shows what a faster frontside bus and faster memory bus brings to the party.

Google's Answer to Wikipedia

Technology Review's Andrew Schrock reports:

Google recently announced Knol, a new experimental website that puts information online in a way that encourages authorial attribution. Unlike articles for the popular online encyclopedia Wikipedia, which anyone is free to revise, Knol articles will have individual authors, whose pictures and credentials will be prominently displayed alongside their work. Currently, participation in the project is by invitation only, but Google will eventually open up Knol to the public. At that point, a given topic may end up with multiple articles by different authors. Readers will be able to rate the articles, and the better an article's rating, the higher it will rank in Google's search results.

Apple Looks To Movie Rentals To Revive Apple TV box

The Register's Tony Smith reports:

Apple is to re-launch its Apple TV set-top box as a movie rental system, offering HD content for $4.99 a pop as a direct download. The hardware's getting cheaper too.

Regular, DVD-quality programming will be on offer to, CEO Steve Jobs said, at a lower price: $3.99 for new titles, $2.99 for old ones.

Viewers will have just 24 hours to finish watching a rented movie once they've started watching it. But they'll have up to 30 days to press Play before the content vanishes from the Apple TV's hard drive.

Rebranding the RIAA

The Register's Andrew Orlowski reports:

Last week, we reported the possibility that the lobby group that represents America's sound recording owners (RIAA) might merge with the global sound recording owners lobby group (IFPI). This raised the awful possibility that the Recording Industry Ass. of America would disappear - making all those "Boycott the RIAA"-type domains useless. Zut alors!

The new organisation obviously needs the full Strategy Boutique treatment. But to begin with, what would it be called? The "Recording Industry Ass. of America" is hard act to follow.....
