Seagate to Launch Slimmer Laptop Hard Disk at CES
IDG News Service's Martyn Williams reports that at January's Consumer Electronics Show, Seagate Technology is planning to unveil a new laptop hard drive that's 25 percent thinner than current models. The new 7-millimeter high drive will allow laptop makers to further reduce the thickness of their computers.
The 2.5" Disk hard disk drives typically used in laptop computers (some "thinbooks" like the MacBook Air use 1.8" HDs) at one time were as much a 25 millimeters high, and nowadays are are usually either 9.5 millimeters high or 12.5 millimeters high.

Gallium Nitride Transistor Could Replace Silicon

A Cornell researcher has created an extremely efficient transistor made from gallium nitride, which may soon replace silicon as king of semiconductors for power applications.
Junxia Shi, a graduate student in the laboratory of Lester Eastman, the John Given Foundation Professor of Engineering, developed the gallium nitride-based device, which could form the basis for the circuitry in products from laptops to hybrid vehicles to windmills to other power electronic systems.

Affirming repeated rumors, Condé Nast, Hearst, News Corporation, Time Inc., and Meredith all officially announced Tuesday that they will agree on open standards for a new digital storefront.
The five publishers said the independent venture will "allow consumers to enjoy their favorite media content on portable digital devices."....

The Register's Will Head says that despite its obvious appeal, 3D hasn't really taken off as far as computers are concerned. but, things seem to be picking up with Acer is the latest to get in on the game with what it claims is the world s first 3D-capable laptop which has a 15.6" display and weighs 2.8kg, has HDMI and four USB ports (sigh), a low-profile keyboard, and several Intel processor options including Core 2 Duo, 4GB of RAM and an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4570 GPU, 802.11n wireless, Gigabit Ethernet, a multi-format card reader and a standard 500GB hard drive, plus Nvidia's been 3D Vision Kit.
