Apple To Copy Windows DRM?

The Inquirer's Nick Farrell says:

Toymaker Apple has decided that Microsoft's Windows Genuine Advantage is so wonderful that it is trying to patent something similar.

Apple have been doing wonderful things this year to really miff its loyal fan base and it seems it wanted to close the year by nicking the thing that annoys even the most loyal Microsoft user.

[Editor's note: If this is really what Apple's up to, it ranks as the dumbest thing the company ever did. Personally, I will never use an OS with aggressive DRM so long as there's an alternative. Not kidding. Desktop Linux, anyone? CM]

Apple Cozies Up To Intel

Forbes' Rachel Rosmarin reports:

Note to Paul Otellini: Is your bunny suit back from the dry cleaner?

Intel's chief executive may have another occasion at which to sport the clean room outfit he donned onstage with Apple Chief Executive Steve Jobs at the Macworld conference in January 2006. Two years ago, Otellini handed Jobs a pristine silicon wafer to mark the announcement of the first Intel-powered Apple portable computer, the MacBook Pro.

This year, Otellini could show up in San Francisco to toss Jobs a chip intended for inclusion in a variety of Apple mobile devices, including tablets, ultra-mobile computers and advanced versions of the iPhone.

Mac OS X Leopard, Oh Dear

carrierdetect.com's andrew says:

It hasn’t taken me long to arrive at the opinion that upgrading to OS X Leopard (10.5) was a bad idea. This wasn’t something that came about through a desire to be one of the first kids on the block to use Apple’s latest installment of shiny operating system goodness. But rather due the fact that I needed to re-install my system and since Leopard was an option I thought I’d give it a whirl. Bad move. Since upgrading I’ve had to remove the battery on a hung MacBook Pro, oh, say about ten times in a matter of weeks.

I really don’t understand where Apple took a wrong turn with this. It’s almost like the Cupertino kids have been hanging out in Redmond and caught a bad dose of the Vista. .....

2007 Roundup: Apple Gets To The Core Of Its Market

VUNet's Shaun Nichols says:

Apple seemed to be synonymous with the iPhone throughout 2007. The mobile stole the spotlight all year and overshadowed the company's other operations.

Many of those non-iPhone offerings, however, logged banner years of their own in 2007.

Apple 2007: Best Year Ever

Ars Technica's Charles Jade says:

In a Stevenote sent to Apple employees at mid-year, Jobs awkwardly described the company as a chair with the three legs - wouldn't that be a stool? - : the Mac, the iPod, and the iPhone. As 2007 winds down, it's seems only appropriate to consider the year for Apple from that ternary perspective.

Intel CPUs, iPod Halo, Mac OS X, Windows Fatigue, whatever the cause, the effect is that 2007 will be remembered as a Mac Renaissance not seen since the early 90s. In 2006, 5,655,000 Macs were sold. 2007 will see sales between 7.7 million and 8 million - a 36 to 40 percent increase - and two to three times the projected growth of industry average....

Notebooks to sport 4GB RAM in early 2008?

Electronista says:

Several notebook makers will make 4GB of RAM standard on their systems at the start of the new year, say companies in Taiwan producing the memory in question.....

However, most Windows PCs continue to run 32-bit versions of Windows, reducing the amount of memory visible to the OS compared to a 64-bit platform. The MacBook line is currently the only mainstream platform that is known to recognize the full amount without special modifications.

How to use Hotmail with Apple Mail

beyondteck.blogspot.com says:

I absolutely love Apple Mail because of its simplicity and to an extent it's robustness (the To-Dos and Notes) and use it all the time when possible. I find that Entourage is a bit too bloated, and the same goes for Thunderbird. Plus, other applications don't have iCal integration, which is another application I have come to love. However, one big problem is that by default Apple Mail does not support Http accounts, so it's impossible to use mail if you use Hotmail or MSN (now apparently called Windows Live Mail). The solution was created by Daniel Parnell fit the bill. It's called HTTPMail. You can find it over at the Automagic Software downloads page.

How to Switch to the Mac…and enjoy doing it

TaoOfMac's Rui Carmo says:

Welcome! A lot of people have been moving to the Mac over the past few years, so a while back I thought I’d jot down a few notes about my experience over the last five years or so, which, over time, grew to become a primer of sorts. This page is updated on a yearly basis (usually around the holiday season, which is when I get the most visits from new Mac owners or people pondering the switch).

Used Mac is Still Better than New PC

toptut.com says:

As someone who has always has a nice PC at home, I always envied the Mac users. Macs are just sleeker, better, more convenient and overall last longer. The only disadvantage of Mac is the price, which I believe hold some people back from getting Mac, however, if Macs are expensive in your local malls, does not mean you cannot afford a used mac. You will not get the experience of unpacking a bland new one, but you also would not need to pay a fortune for it, right?

The Tables Have Turned as Apple Grows Market Share

Low End Mac's Tommy Thomas says:

There was a time not so long ago where the Mac was dismissed by the mainstream because "it had little software, it wasn't a PC, it was inferior." Those were some of the lame excuses I heard many times about Macs vs. PCs. My, my, my . . . how times have changed.

This complete turnaround can be traced back to 1997, when many were predicting the death of Apple. The PC world was ready to eulogize Apple and sweep it away to the dust bin of computer history. But gosh darn it, wouldn't ya know . . . we Mac fans refused to let go of the rainbow.

Laptop Project Enlivens Peruvian Hamlet

The Associated Press

Doubts about whether poor, rural children really can benefit from quirky little computers evaporate as quickly as the morning dew in this hilltop Andean village, where 50 primary school children got machines from the One Laptop Per Child project six months ago.

These offspring of peasant families whose monthly earnings rarely exceed the cost of one of the US$188 laptops -- people who can ill afford pencil and paper much less books -- can't get enough of their "XO" laptops.

Apple MacBook is Amazon’s No. 1 top-selling computer (At least it was for a while)

Apple 2.0's Philip Elmer-DeWitt says:

Despite fierce competition from machines with more than twice the memory and price points hundreds of dollars lower, Apple’s (AAPL) white 120 GB MacBook has captured the top spot on Amazon’s list of bestselling computers this Christmas eve.

The Mac Night Owl: The Real Losers in the Think Secret Settlement

I don’t know about you, but I’ve always had mixed feelings about Mac rumor sites. Yes, they often make for an entertaining read. Sometimes they even get the facts correct, or mostly correct, and clue us in on a genuine new Apple product or service.

The Mac Night Owl: The Leopard Era Report: The Tiger Disconnect Persists

The conventional wisdom has it that Mac OS 10.4 was Apple’s most reliable system upgrade ver, with millions of users depending on Tiger for work and play. The combination of performance, useful features and stability made set Tiger at the pinnacle of Apple’s operating system achievements.

Charles,

Right about leaving Mac OS if Apple ever follows M$ in the DRM scheme.

[Editor’s note: If this is really what Apple’s up to, it ranks as the dumbest thing the company ever did. Personally, I will never use an OS with aggressive DRM so long as there’s an alternative. Not kidding. Desktop Linux, anyone? CM]

Me too: not kidding, I will leave Mac OS too if Apple pulls a stunt like this! Absolutely unbelievable that they might even be thinking about doing something so dumb and rude to its customers. I’ve been using Macs since the Plus, ‘86, helped change several ‘Doze users to Macs, and really like OS X. But, like you, Charles, I WILL go to Linux if Apple does this. And, I will even buy a cheaper than Apple Toshiba, etc. laptop to run it on (pre-installed Linux is available).

Say it ain’t so…
